1 Russian troops raid Georgian town; scores dead

By MUSA SADULAYEV, Associated Press Writer

OUTSIDE TSKHINVALI, Georgia – Russian tanks and troops rumbled into the separatist province of South Ossetia and Russian aircraft bombed a Georgian town Saturday in a major escalation of the conflict that has left hundreds of civilians dead and wounded.

Russia, which has close ties to the province and posts peacekeepers there, sent in the armed convoys and combat aircraft to prevent Georgia from retaking control of its breakaway region. The military convoys included volunteers from around Russia’s North Caucasus.

Georgia, a U.S. ally whose troops have been trained by American soldiers, launched a major offensive overnight Friday. Heavy rocket and artillery fire pounded the provincial capital, Tskhinvali, leaving much of the city in ruins.

Remembering Spiritual Death: In Honor of World’s Indigenous People Day

Today is International Day of the World’s Indigenous People, which is designed to celebrate indigenous people and to serve as a reminder of the many cultural, educational, health, human rights, environmental, social and economic problems still unresolved. While the world community has documents recognizing indigenous rights, it is often a paper right only, as governments and corporations continue the injustices of assaults, land seizures, environmental degradation of spiritual lands and human rights abuses.

Pony Party: The Dog Ate My…..

I decided yesterday to make some really tasty pork tacos…….

I bought a gigantic pork shoulder/butt and got the butcher to trim a bit of the fat and split it in half.

I braised it in aromatics ( onions/carrot/cumin/coriander seeds ) for 2.5 hours until it was tender. I reserved some of the braising juice and then roasted it in a pan for another 45 minutes. After that you cool it, shred it with a fork and mix it with half a cup of the braising juice to soften it.

You add your home made salsa ( made it ahead of time ) some diced avocado and some mashed beans. As it happened I made a salad of mixed spring vegetables and cucumbers to go with it.

I jumped in the shower while my meat cooled. I spend most of the day cleaning and doing laundry I was very much looking forward to a carefully cooked but easy meal.

But alas a mystery!!!!! There was no pork in the kitchen when I returned 10 minutes later.

There was an empty plate…..

There were two guilty looking dogs but no confessions…..

I had peanut butter sandwiches for dinner last night.

Remember….. don’t rec pomy party hang out and chit chat and then go read some of the excellent offerings on our recent and rec’d list.

Oh. Yeah. Tell me a story about something your dog did.

Real News: Israel, Iran and the New Neocons

Yesterday we saw, against the backdrop of war between Russian and Georgia over Ossetia, The Real News discussing the decision by Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to step down amid corruption allegations and the coming contest in Israel between the two major contenders to replace Olmert as head of the Kadima party; frontrunner Tzipi Livni, a former Mossad operative and current Foreign Minister, and her main rival Shaul Mofaz, a hawkish former general and current Transportation Minister, and whether the next Israeli leader will order an attack on Iran.

Today, The Real News presents, from American News Project:

Washington’s neocons are alive and well, advising both John McCain and President Bush. Now many are saying Bush should permit Israel to attack Iran’s nuclear facilities after Election Day before the new president takes office. ANP investigates as we chase down John Bolton, Bill Kristol and Frank Gaffney to see how far ahead these hawks are thinking. And a new report says the whole plan could backfire.

Credit crisis triggers unprecedented response

Worst debt turmoil since Depression sparks government action

By David Cho and Neil Irwin

Since the credit crisis erupted a year ago, the Bush administration has presided over one of the broadest expansions of the government into private lending in U.S. history, risking public money to prop up financial firms both large and small.

The administration has transformed federal agencies into dominant players in such diverse realms as student lending and mortgage finance while exposing itself to trillions of dollars in loans.

Suskind Revisited

by Philip Giraldi

Posted on August 7th, 2008

An extremely reliable and well placed source in the intelligence community has informed me that Ron Suskind’s revelation that the White House ordered the preparation of a forged letter linking Saddam Hussein to al-Qaeda and also to attempts made to obtain yellowcake uranium is correct but that a number of details are wrong.

It was Feith’s office that produced the letter and then surfaced it to the media in Iraq.  Unlike the Agency, the Pentagon had no restrictions on it regarding the production of false information to mislead the public.

It was announced that the National Police Agency has proposed the first revision to the Firearms and Swords Control Law in 46 years following the June stabbing spree in Akihabara.
