The Occupation WINS!!

MoveOn Emergency Petition UPDATE 10.13.11 10:45pmEDT

Tonight I went to Occupy Wall Street to deliver the signatures of more than 240,000 people-including you-who signed our emergency petition asking Mayor Bloomberg not to evict the Occupy Wall Street protesters from Zuccotti Park tomorrow.

We held a huge press conference at the park with dozens of news outlets, and then hundreds people marched up Broadway to City Hall to deliver the petition.

When they found out Mayor Bloomberg was busy dining with the 1% a few blocks away at the ultra-luxurious Cipriani, the march continued to the doors of the restaurant.

It was a strong show of nationwide solidarity, numerous local elected officials joined our march to oppose Bloomberg’s decision, and MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell even featured the petition tonight. As of right now, however, Bloomberg’s order to clear Zuccotti Park still stands and we won’t know until tomorrow morning what he’s going to do.

But regardless of Mayor Bloomberg’s actions, the most important thing any of us can do is to make sure this movement keeps growing by supporting a local Occupy event in our town.

BREAKING: #OCCUPY WINS! Bloomberg backs down!

Huge news! This morning at 6 o’clock, MoveOn members, union members, community organizers and thousands of others gathered in Zuccotti Park to stand in solidarity with the people who are occupying Wall Street and to defend them from eviction by Mayor Bloomberg.

They were supported by hundreds of thousands of people from around the country like you who signed petitions and flooded the city with calls.

And they won!

We’ve got video of the scene as the announcement was read and, well, you’ve got to watch it.

PETITIONs, ETC

WE the People: petition the obama administration to: Make Bribing Politicians Illegal

No corporation should be allowed to give campaign contributions to any politician or political party that is involved in writing or voting on legislation that affects them or the industry they profit from.

In any other scenario giving money to people who are supposed to be regulating something you are doing is considered bribery. If a sports team gives money to the referee before their game – its a bribe. If a defendant gives money to a judge or jury member before his trial – its a bribe. If a criminal gives money to a police officer – its a bribe.

Politics should be no different. Corporations giving millions of dollars to politicians could not create a more clear conflict of interest in policy making – ITS A BRIBE. If the Administration disagrees we would love to hear why.

Change.org: NYC Mayor: Stand with Occupy Wall Street

Not a single banker has gone to jail for crimes that led to the financial meltdown. But now over 1,000 protesters have been arrested in the inspiring Occupy Wall Street protest in New York City.

Tell Mayor Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Kelly: Respect the Occupy Wall Street protesters’ constitutional right to peaceful assembly.

The occupation of Wall Street has inspired a nationwide movement in the spirit of Wisconsin.

But there has been a powerful backlash against peaceful protesters who are using both their right to public assembly and tactics of nonviolent civil disobedience to call attention to the fact that our government has bailed out the wealthiest Americans but has done little to help middle and working class Americans who have lost their jobs and had their homes foreclosed on.

The protest is building momentum with a huge solidarity march today that CREDO and Other 98% members, progressive organizations and labor are joining. However the very existence of Occupy Wall Street could be endangered by strongarm NYPD tactics aimed at intimidating protesters and ending their three week stand against the big Wall Street banks.

Tell Mayor Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Kelly: Respect the Occupy Wall Street protesters’ constitutional right to peaceful assembly.

Change.org: Occupy Wall Street: Occupy Together

We, the 99%, are fed up with our elected officials doing nothing to curb corruption and allowing, if not assisting, in the degradation of our rights, freedoms and liberties as not just citizens of the United States of America, but citizens of the Planet Earth.

We won’t stand for intimidation and brutality that is taking place against these protesters. We support them, support their cause, and support their actions.

Eric Grieco: Tell Congress: We need jobs, not cuts!

Speaker John Boehner:

We stand with the 99%.

We’re fed up with Wall Street greed and Washington inaction.  We need jobs, not cuts, and policies that benefit 99% of Americans instead of only the top 1%.

Congress needs to work to build an economy that works for all of us, not just the richest.  As a first step to putting America back to work, Congress should pass the American Jobs Act immediately — no later than by the Thanksgiving Recess.  And pay for it by taxing Wall Street speculation.

AVAAZ: The World vs Wall Street

To fellow citizens occupying Wall Street and peoples protesting across the world:

   We stand with you in this struggle for real democracy. Together we can end the capture and corruption of our governments by corporate and wealthy elites, and hold our politicians accountable to serve the public interest. We are united – the time for change has come!

Credo Action: Stand with Occupy Wall Street

“Not a single banker has gone to jail and yet over 1,000 protesters have been arrested. I stand with the protesters of Occupy Wall Street, and I demand that the NYPD respect their constitutional right to peaceful assembly.”

Get Money Out

It’s Time to GET MONEY OUT of politics

Bailouts. War. Unemployment. Our government is bought, and we’re angry. Now, we’re turning our anger into positive action. By signing this petition, you are joining our campaign to get money out of politics. Our politicians won’t do this. But we will. We will become an unrelenting, organized wave advocating a Constitutional amendment to get money out of politics.

As the petition grows, the wave grows.  Email, Facebook, Tweet — GET MONEY OUT.  We are using The Dylan Ratigan Show on MSNBC, and our ability to influence other media outlets as a platform to force this issue to the center of the 2012 elections. Join us.

From our former Washington Lobbyist, Jimmy Williams, here is a DRAFT of our Constitutional Amendment for public debate this fall:

“No person, corporation or business entity of any type, domestic or foreign, shall be allowed to contribute money, directly or indirectly, to any candidate for Federal office or to contribute money on behalf of or opposed to any type of campaign for Federal office. Notwithstanding any other provision of law, campaign contributions to candidates for Federal office shall not constitute speech of any kind as guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution or any amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Congress shall set forth a federal holiday for the purposes of voting for candidates for Federal office.”

First of all. There are no Official Demands of the Occupy Movement.  that being said, multiple factions of the movement have been assembling to discuss and vote on the output and message for the movement.  Below is a LIST OF PROPOSED “DEMANDS FOR CONGRESS” proposed by the website (occupywallstreet.org) which does not entirely represent  the Occupy Wall Street General Assembly.  Below this list is a list of grievance that citizens have provided nationally and have voted on in solidarity of the movement.

They are in process of making this list. THEY WANT YOUR INPUT (YOU as in EVERYbody)

There are instructions to give your opinion/additions/suggestions to this.

There is a team of lawyers working on this (pro-bono) & tweaking this ALL the time.

  1. Here’s a very important action from Roots Action.Org!  I’ve posted it on my current diary . . . . I’m posting it here, so we can get as many to sign on to the action, as possible!

    ~~~~~~~
    Yes, We Have a Permit to Occupy
    U.S. Hypocrisy about Occupations
    This morning, Occupy Wall Street protesters celebrated when New York authorities beat a last-minute retreat from clearing Liberty Plaza – as hundreds of labor and other activists rushed to defend the square.
    But at the same time this morning, dozens of state troopers in riot gear cleared out Occupy Denver protests. In cities across the country, Occupy protesters have faced police violence, arrests and forcible removal.
    The authorities say we don’t have the proper permits to occupy public spaces.
    Our permit to occupy is the First Amendment.
    Sign the following statement (click on the logo for the statement) and spread the message and video:
    Everyone, please sign this appeal right away and be sure to watch the dynamite video “I’m Not Moving!”
  2. by Paul Mutter, entitled “Bloomberg Didn’t Evict Occupy Wall Street!” Demonstrators Cheer, may have been the letter that turned the tide with respect to “eviction” of the OWS protestors.
    The letter emanates from the Center for Constitutional Rights — the CCR always does us proud!
    On Behalf of Occupy Wall Street Protestors: Letter to the CEO of Brookfield Office Properties
    On behalf of Occupy Wall Street protestors, a group of New York civil liberties lawyers has issued the following letter to the CEO of Brookfield Office Properties, who recently requested NYPD intervention at Liberty Park, where protestors have been stationed for weeks.  The park is scheduled to be cleared “for cleaning” tomorrow morning, October 14.  Occupy Wall Street has issued a city-wide call to action to oppose the clearing.
    Dear Mr. Clark:
                Attorneys associated with the National Lawyers Guild-New York City Chapter have been asked to represent the Sanitation Working Group, one of the several autonomous working groups formed and operated by people who have been occupying Liberty Park.  We are in receipt of a copy of your letter to New York City Police Department Commissioner Raymond Kelly requesting police intervention and outlining your concerns about cleaning and maintenance of Liberty Park.
                The enforcement action you are requesting raises serious First Amendment and other legal concerns. Under the guise of cleaning the Park you are threatening fundamental constitutional rights. There is no basis in the law for your request for police intervention, nor have you cited any. Such police action without a prior court order would be unconstitutional.
               The Sanitation Working Group has been addressing the concerns in your letter all along. Beyond that, it has committed itself to carrying out a thorough and complete cleaning and to addressing all the issues related to sanitation raised in your letter.  The Working Group welcomes representatives of Brookfield to view the cleaning process and its results.
               Our investigation has revealed that no permanent structures have been erected within the Park, nor have any actions been taken to damage the Park, its plantings or other amenities. Your letter raises concerns about potential water infiltration of the Park’s underground lighting and electrical hazards. However, based on a visual inspection recently conducted by our clients, there has been no damage to the lenses covering the underground lighting and thus there is no risk of water infiltration. Additionally, it is our understanding that there has been no electricity running in said fixtures for weeks now. Therefore, there is no risk of electrical hazard.
               The Working Group will continue to bag and haul trash on a tight schedule.  Trash has consistently been bagged and hauled to established collection points and recycling rules have been strictly adhered to. The Working Group has been using primarily 50 gallon, 3mil. thickness contactor bags. Additionally, the Working Group typically has had between one and fifteen people sweeping the Park with brooms at any given time.
    The Sanitation Working Group has informed us that the following activities are being carried out to further address these issues:
    1.     All hard surfaces within the Park, are being scrubbed and/or polished;
    2.     Garbage removal will be stepped up;
    3.     Every item resting on the ground will be removed to allow for thorough cleaning; and
    4.     Power washing will be employed where appropriate  or possible
               Our clients are willing to sit down with you to resolve any of your concerns. They want to negotiate in good faith. Our clients agree to address any reasonable issues of sanitation safety and access and would like to prevent these issues from creating a pretext for police action in violation of our client’s First Amendment rights to utilize the Park. If you nonetheless decide to proceed with your request for police action, prior court approval is required.
                Please feel free to call Ms. Ratner Kunstler at 917-331-8012 or Mr. Oliver at 646-263-3495 to discuss these matters. We look forward to hearing from you this evening.
                                                                           Very truly yours,
                                                                           ~S~
