Some Fascinating Factoids About U. S. Supreme Court Nominations…

Since the Johnson Administration, Republicon presidents have enjoyed 13 of the 17 successful nominations to the U. S. Supreme Court. Jimmy Carter never had the opportunity to make such a nomination during his four years in office. Bill Clinton and Barack Obama have had two successful nominations each, all four occurring during their first two years in office when the Democrats controlled the Senate (i.e., 1993 & 1994 and again in 2009 & 2010).

The last time a Republicon-controlled Senate confirmed a nomination from a Democratic President was more than 120 years ago when President Grover Cleveland nominated Rufus W. Peckham to the bench. Peckham was confirmed by a voice vote on December 9, 1895.

The last eleven successful nominations occurring when the Presidency and Senate were controlled by different parties since 1895 were ALL situations where a Republicon President nominated and a Democratic-controlled Senate confirmed.
