US beekeepers fear for livelihoods as anti-Zika toxin kills 2.5m bees

Huddled around their hives, beekeepers around the south-eastern US fear a new threat to their livelihood: a fine mist beaded with neurotoxin, sprayed from the sky by officials at war with mosquitos that carry the Zika virus.
Earlier this week, South Carolina beekeepers found millions of dead honey bees carpeting their apiaries, killed by an insecticide. Video posted by a beekeeper to Facebook showed thousands of dead insects heaped around hives, while a few survivors struggled to move the bodies of fellow bees.
“This is what’s left of Flowertown Bees,” a despondent keeper says in the video. Company co-owner Juanita Stanley told the Associated Press her farm looked “like it’s been nuked” and estimated 2.5 million bees were killed. …
Earthquake Rattles Oklahoma Amid Warnings of ‘Inherent’ Fracking Risks

Oklahoma was hit with a 5.6-magnitude earthquake on Saturday, with reports of tremors felt in six neighboring states—making it one of the strongest quakes in Oklahoma’s history and fueling a growing consensus that the cause lies with wastewater disposal from hydraulic fracturing, or fracking.
CNN reported that the event also rattled Kansas, Arkansas, Missouri, Texas, Nebraska, and Iowa, citing geophysicists with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), who said it “occurred as the result of shallow strike-slip faulting.”

In Oklahoma, where earthquakes increased by 50 percent last year as about 1.5 billion barrels of wastewater from oil and gas sites were disposed of underground, the link between fracking and seismic events is well-established. …
British government to set out plans on post-Brexit ties with EU in coming week

The British government will set out in the coming week how it plans to shape its relationship with the European Union upon leaving the bloc, Prime Minister Theresa May said in an interview broadcast on Sunday.
Since taking office in July, May and her Brexit minister David Davis have given little detail about what Britain’s future relationship with the EU will look like, saying only they want it to involve curbs on immigration and a good deal on trade.
“He (Davis) will be making a statement to parliament this week about the work that the government has been doing over the summer and obviously how we are going to take that forward in shaping the sort of relationship we want with the EU,” May told the BBC in an interview recorded before she left Britain for the G20 summit in China. …
Iowa prosecutors won’t charge cop filmed yanking suspect’s dreadlocks while punching him in the head

An Iowa police officer will not be charged with assault even though video showed him yanking on the dreadlocks and then punching a suspect repeatedly in the head, after he had already surrendered and was laying face down on the ground.

“Based upon this fact and my review of the entire matter, the likelihood of a Black Hawk County jury convicting Officer Wittmayer is minimal if not completely non-existent,” Assistant Attorney General Scott Brown said in a statement, adding that Keller did not appear to be hurt by the blows.Tom Frerichs, Keller’s attorney, disagreed and forwarded the video to the FBI this week, saying, “I can’t think of any other job in which an employee is allowed to repeatedly hit another person, pull out some of their hair and still keep their job.” …

Man charged with shooting corncobs at neighbor’s home
WESTERLY, R.I. (AP) — A 50-year-old Westerly man is charged with shooting corncobs at his neighbor’s home.
The Westerly Sun reports that Jeffrey Osella was arrested Tuesday night. Police say he answered his door shirtless and had corn kernels stuck to his chest.
Police say Osella used a potato gun to shoot corncobs at his neighbor’s house, which is up for sale. The gun is made of PVC pipe and uses a light accelerant such as hair spray that can be ignited.
Police say Osella and his neighbor have long-running disputes.
Osella is charged with disorderly conduct and firing in a compact area. He’s free on bail and is to be arraigned Friday.
A phone number for Osella could not be found.
Osella’s attorney says he can’t comment until he reviews the case.
