Something inside me just snapped

( – promoted by buhdydharma )

It is just another revelation about our inhumanity toward others.  Usually the stories send me into a rage.  Today, something just snapped. I just feel sick and disoriented.

It happened when I read this story in the Washington Post. It is not even about the depravity of CIA, military, and civilian contractors under our glorious commander-in-chief Bush. It is about law enforcement officers watching war crimes and doing nothing.

I am still trying to figure out why it caused my head to spin.

Maybe it is the fact that the FBI agents are held up as virtuous.  Sure, they witnessed torture and did nothing, but they did not join in. They even “balked” (which could mean they even questioned the depravity of the torturers).

The lengthy study by the Justice Department’s inspector general clears the FBI of engaging in coercive questioning of terrorism suspects, concluding that “the vast majority of FBI agents deployed in the military zones” adhered to bureau policies and balked at more aggressive tactics used by Defense Department and CIA employees and contractors.

We are told the problem was one of confusion.

More than 300 FBI agents who served in Guantanamo Bay, Iraq or Afghanistan told the inspector general they had observed or heard about questionable interview tactics by other government workers. But bureau employees apparently were confused about how to draw the line between behavior that was “abusive” or merely harsh, such as the use of loud music and stripping.

That is a lot of confusion. But, we need to look on the bright side.

“But we believe the FBI should be credited for its conduct and professionalism in detainee interrogations in the military zones and in generally avoiding participation in detainee abuse.”

The problem was one of deficient guidance by the FBI leadership.  They were “too slow to provide guidance” to the field agents. It is nothing that a remedial course in leadership cannot fix.

Inspector General Glenn A. Fine faulted bureau leaders, however, for waiting until May 2004 — a month after abuses at the Guantanamo Bay military prison became public and nearly three years after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks — to issue a policy making clear that FBI workers were obliged to report abuse or mistreatment of detainees even if it fell short of criminal violations. The FBI was “too slow to provide guidance,” Fine’s report said.

The confusion and inaction is really the fault of the Justice Department.

In congressional testimony last month, Mueller hinted that the FBI’s hands were tied in part by opinions from the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel, which approved several of the coercive interrogation strategies.

The “FBI’s hands were tied” seems like a poor choice of words when talking about torture, but maybe my sense of irony has atrophied.

And why has it taken five years for the allegations to come to light?

The report was delayed for years because of alleged foot dragging in declassification by the Defense Department. Portions of the 370-page study remain subject to redactions for national security reasons.

At the end of the day, no one will be held accountable except a few lowly military personnel, but certainly not high ranking members of the Defense Department, Justice Department, CIA, or our patriotic corporations.  They were just a little too zealous in protecting our freedom.

At least I can be proud the FBI resisted the temptation to torture and I live in a country where people care about lapel decorations.

I am probably just catching a cold.  It is probably nothing a few aspirin will not fix.

The Maddow Movement: Help Edit the Petition!

Last Friday night, Rachel Maddow guest hosted for KO on Countdown. Not only did she do a great job….she won the time slot in the key 25-54 year old demographic! The one that advertisers value most. You can watch the whole show on Youtube (click on the vid to take you to the Youtube page) and below is the Dkos diary with the numbers. For such a bare diary, it spent a very long time on the reclist, showing Rachel’s popularity by yet another metric.

Home Run for Rachel Maddow, by Tod

Below the fold: We have found an online petition site, now all we have to do is write the petition! Below is a draft for you to give input on. Once we have the petition set and in place…the next step is to start publishing the link to it wherever we can. That will be the official kick off of the Maddow Movment, Yeehaw! Suggestions are more than welcome!

The draft:

Dear MSNBC,

We the undersigned hereby petition you to waste no time in giving your up and coming political commentator, Rachel Maddow, her own show on your network.

We wish to take this opportunity to point out the many and varied advantages to both you and the public, whom you serve as responsible members of the Fourth Estate. These advantages range from the personal to the political, to the financial interests of your fine network!

We hope you will consider this small sample of the reasons and advantages of promoting Ms. Maddow to a one hour show with her own time slot.

Admiration for Maddow’s fresh and fearless approach, sparkling intellect, quick wit, and refreshing honesty.

Her unquestionable appeal to key demographics. Including the 25-54 demo, which as guest host for the incredibly popular Mr Olbermann (as you undoubtedly know) she recently won, beating O’Reilly by 100,000 viewers.

Representation. At this time you have an all male line up. Ms. Maddow would not only serve to represent all women on your network, but also represent the LGBT community, a demographic with massive purchasing power for your advertisers products.

Our concern for the overall state of the media in the rapidly approaching post Fox News, post Bush era. As the incredibly popular Mr. Olbermann consistently points out, the influence of Fox News brand of “journalism” as represented by O’Reilly and Hannity is corrosive to true journalism. It has tainted your entire industry. Adding Ms. Maddow to your lineup cannot help but restore credibility and professionalism to your entire industry.

And finally politics and culture.

As you well know the nation is fed up with the Conservative and Republican way of doing things and is ready for change. 80% of people polled say we are on the wrong track. For the last ten years the track we have been following has been the Conservative track. George Bush and Fox News have succeeded in setting the national media conversation and framing. Now a change is occurring. News consumers are fed up with the with the Conservative spin that has dominated the news. Since your network has rejected this and started broadcasting the incredibly popular Keith Olbermann to provide a counterpoint, you have no doubt noticed his success….and the increased viewership and profitably of your network!

We petition you to continue this trend by promoting Rachel Maddow to her own show.

As the nation changes, so must the media…and you can lead that change by promoting Rachel Maddow and putting the second objective, Progressive voice on the air in her own time slot with her own (increased) editorial control. Thus providing our nation with more real, balanced coverage of the news…and, due to Rachel’s unique and insightful voice and her many fans and admirers, practically guaranteeing a ratings winner!

To state the obvious, each of the signatories to this petition represents a viewing household.

What do you think? what should we change, cut, or improve?

Yell your suggestions louder in the comments!

“Why is Chelsea so ugly?”

So, letmegetthisstraight, Geraldine…

Ferraro, who clashed with the Obama campaign about whether she made a racially offensive remark, said she might not either. “I think Obama was terribly sexist,” she said.

So, in a two party system, where being a Democrat, but not voting for the Democratic candidate for President means, tacitly, supporting the Republican nominee, you are NOT going to vote for the “terribly sexist” Barack Obama and instead throw in your ever-principled lot with arch-feminist John McCain who has scored the very impressive zero on NARAL America’s Congressional Record on Choice for the last eight years running, who also has a big old goose-egg on Planned Parenthoods reproductive scorecard, who has fought hard to garner an at-least-its-consistent nada-nunca-nil on the National Family Planning & Reproductive Health Association scorecard for women’s issues, who has blood-sweat-and-tears’d his way to a 23% (as compared to Senator Obama’s 100% on RESULTS scorecard on poverty.

This is zero from the National Farmers Union John McCain and Zero from the National Council of La Raza John McCain and zero from National Association of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselors John McCain and zero from Council for a Livable World John McCain and zero from the American Academy of Family Physicians John McCain.

This is the John MCCain who has promised to go out of his way to help the anti-penised by appointing anti-choice justices to the Supreme Court, who now, suddenly, out of nowhere, supports a “repeal” of Roe vs. Wade, who compassionately responded “excellent question” to the supporter who asked, in reference to your candidate, “How do we beat the, bitch?”; who sensitively called his own wife a I’m sure-its-just-an-anatomical-reference cunt in front of a group of reporters in 1992.

Oh, and by the way… “Why is Chelsea so ugly? Because Janet Reno is her father”… for the record, that’s also the HILARIOUS, SIDE-SPLITTING John Sidney McCain.

No, no, I get it now.
