THE WEEK IN EDITORIAL CARTOONS

This weekly diary takes a look at the past week’s important news stories from the perspective of our leading editorial cartoonists (including a few foreign ones) with analysis and commentary added in by me.

When evaluating a cartoon, ask yourself these questions:

1. Does a cartoon add to my existing knowledge base and help crystallize my thinking about the issue depicted?

2. Does the cartoonist have any obvious biases that distort reality?

3. Is the cartoonist reflecting prevailing public opinion or trying to shape it?

The answers will help determine the effectiveness of the cartoonist’s message.

Brown Lied at Iraq War Inquiry

And he got caught!

Will this bring Brown done in the coming election, while the guiltier, here and over there, maintain their freedom from their crimes!

Brown forced to change stance on army spending

Which will inflame the families of the fallen Brits who were trumpeting that the troops were under equipped and lacked training on some of the equipment they did have.

Would We Hear This Here? We Should!

Spoken Publicly and with Force of Conviction!

And not only as to those leaders who send our Military to wars of choice but also the war profiteers who reap wealth from the huge defense budgets spent and these wars!

Unlawful killing: coroner attacks army inadequacies over blast that killed four

Afghanistan: Just Show or…..

Afghan president to host April peace conference

Is this just show from our puppet, or rather cheney’s cabal hand picked leader, or does he really care and wants to end the devisions and violence leading to the occupation forces pulling out but helping in finally rebuilding, and promised some nine years ago, what has long been a destroyed country under constant war.

Iraq War Inquiry Resumes

Iraq inquiry: we have every right to know why we went to war

And so it begins again, will we see some more little tidbits of information on this Countries, the once United States, as we did before the Holiday break.

A Lesson from Labour? Perhaps.

Original article, titled Statement:”A long time in politics” – Labour after the elections, via Socialist Appeal (UK):

“A week is a long time in politics.” Harold Wilson

The European election results were published last Monday, following on from the local election results of a few days earlier. They showed Labour behind not just the Tories, but even behind UKIP, a lunatic fringe party, on just 15% of the vote. For the first time since 1918, Labour had been beaten by the Tories in Wales. Labour was smashed in its other heartlands, where working class voters just sat at home in disgust, and was completely marginalised elsewhere in the country. Labour came 5th in the South East with just 8.2% of the vote. In Cornwall they came 6th behind the Cornish Nationalist Party, whom presumably even the local folk see as a lost cause.

The Labour Party – to heal the system or to hasten its end?

An editorial from Socialist Worker (UK):

From across the Pond: Will the crisis lead to the rebirth of the Labour left?

Original article via Socialistworker.org (UK):

Now, I know what you’re thinking (well, maybe one or two of you):  rjones2818’s gone off the deep end now, trying to connect the Labour party in the UK with the Democrats in the US.  The comparison is good in the sense that both parties are the one’s who are said to represent working people.  The difference is that there actually is a Left in Great Britain, so a return to the left is not out of the question for Labour.  If the Left actually took control of the Dems, it’d be something of a revolution (the Left, as it is in the US, has been tromped upon by the Dems since at least post-1972’s election).  The comparison is valid in that both Labour and the Dems have come under the thrall of neoliberalism.  So…

Supporting occupation – Gordon Brown in Israel

Whoever scheduled Gordon Brown’s recent visit to Israel is surely out of a job. Brown’s dreary, etiolated performance – appropriate for a political corpse – was rendered even flatter by its proximity to Barack Obama’s headline-hogging whirlwind tour of Europe and the Middle East. Despite the differences in style, however, both politicians took to the podium in Israel with a similar message: one of support for the latter’s rejectionist expansionism.

Updated: Tibet, and Panic In The Streets of London

Londoners awoke on a lazy, snowy Sunday morning to images of protest flooding their television screens, including one moment when a protester was almost successful in dousing the Olympic flame as it was carried by British celebrity Konnie Huq:

Updated – Tibet: China Admits Protests Spreading After Footage Aired

…And Gordon Brown steps in to fill the Western void.

First, the footage. After this was aired on CTV in Canada and then picked up by other Western news outlets, China has formally admitted that the protests have spread outside Lhasa:
