Funkalicious Friday: Bring out yer Dead!

Ok then!

I was not born in the desert or raised in a lions den….but I was born on Haight Street and raised in with the Dead.

My “favorite” Dead song

Just to get this out of the way, I first heard the Dead when I was playing on the swingset in the Panhandle and they were playing free concerts….65-66…I was seven or eight. I have been to more dead shows than you AND dropped more Acid! Jerry Garcia has personally sweat on me!

My ‘era’ is just post Pigpen to when In The Dark came out….and ruined everything!

Bobby said of the new riches they then enjoyed something along the line of….”yeah, the money changes you, before when I would find a pistachio nut that didn’t have the little split in it I would break it open….now i just toss ’em.”

You see what kind of damage selling out does to your fucking SOUL, maaaaaan? I mean….shit!

This is the song that contains the best line EVER! (‘nothin left to do but smile, smile smile’)

Okay….tell yer Dead stories or yakk about some LESSER band….

But there are 2 hard and fast rules here at DD that I have just made up. Rule #1: You post KennyG, your ass is banned.

Rule #2: Michael fucking Bolton too!

Special Bonus Thunder & Lightning! (Fridays at The Saloon on Grant ST/AVE, Tanked up on on espresso from the Trieste, Windowpane from Bolinas and Thai sticks….iirc, which I probably don’t!)

  2. my “favorite” Dead song. (and this video is excellent, Thank you).  I think if I were put to the task I’d say:

    Jack Straw
    Althea
    Row Jimmy
    Box of Rain
    Morning Dew

    And that is a really, really tough call.

  3. hannah was wearing her dead shirt today.  knowing hannah, she’ll probably be wearing it tomorrow, too.

  6. I know you, rider, gonna miss me when I’m gone;
    I know you, rider, gonna miss me when I’m gone;
    Gonna miss your baby, from rolling in your arms.

    Laid down last night, Lord, I could not take my rest;
    Laid down last night, Lord, I could not take my rest;
    My mind was wandering like the wild geese in the West.

    The Sun will shine in my back door someday.
    The Sun will shine in my back door someday.
    March winds will blow all my troubles away.

    I wish I was a headlight, on a North bound train;
    I wish I was a headlight, on a North bound train;
    I’d shine my light through cool Colorado rain.

    I know you, rider, gonna miss me when I’m gone;
    I know you, rider, gonna miss me when I’m gone;
    Gonna miss your baby, from rolling in your arms.

    I was having fun with aaraujo in the openthread at dkos.

    I don’t have a favorite Dead song, there are just too many.

    I went to one Dead concert at Duck Stadium in Eugene in like ?’87?  I think it was the “Touch of Grey” tour.  Great fun since I was 30 at the time.

    The big thing at the time was whether or not you wanted people to spritz you with their spray bottles because they were putting DMSO (a topically applied horse liniment) and LSD in the water.  The DMSO accelerated absorption thru the skin.

    Well, you could try to avoid it…not!

  8. Old man down, way down down, down by the docks of the city.
    Blind and dirty, asked me for a dime, a dime for a cup of coffee.
    I got no dime but I got some time to hear his story.
    My name is August West, and I love my Pearly Baker best more than my wine.
    More than my wine – more than my maker, though he’s no friend of mine.

    Everyone said, I’d come to no good, I knew I would Pearly, believe them.
    Half of my life, I spent doin’ time for some other fucker’s crime,
    The other half found me stumbling ’round drunk on Burgundy wine.

    But I’ll get back on my feet again someday,
    The good Lord willin’, if He says I may.
    I know that the life i’m livin’s no good,
    I’ll get a new start, live the life I should.
    I’ll get up and fly away, I’ll get up and fly away, fly away.

    Pearly’s been true, true to me, true to my dyin’ day he said,
    I said to him, I said to him, “I’m sure she’s been.”
    I said to him, “I’m sure she’s been tru to you.”

    Got up and wandered, wandered downtown, nowhere to go but just hang around.
    I’ve got a girl, named Bonnie Lee, I know that girl’s been true to me.
    I know she’s been, I’m sure she’s been true to me.

  9. Sugar magnolia, blossoms blooming, heads all empty and I dont care,
    Saw my baby down by the river, knew shed have to come up soon for air.

    Sweet blossom come on, under the willow, we can have high times if youll abide
    We can discover the wonders of nature, rolling in the rushes down by the riverside.

    Shes got everything delightful, shes got everything I need,
    Takes the wheel when Im seeing double, pays my ticket when I speed

    She comes skimmin through rays of violet, she can wade in a drop of dew,
    She dont come and I dont follow, waits backstage while I sing to you.

    Well, she can dance a cajun rhythm, jump like a willys in four wheel drive.
    Shes a summer love for spring, fall and winter. she can make happy any man alive.

    Sugar magnolia, ringing that bluebell, caught up in sunlight, come on out singing
    Ill walk you in the sunshine, come on honey, come along with me.

    Shes got everything delightful, shes got everything I need,
    A breeze in the pines and the sun and bright moonlight, lazing in the sunshine yes
    Indeed.

    Sometimes when the cuckoos crying, when the moon is half way down,
    Sometimes when the night is dying, I take me out and I wander around, I wander
    round.

    Sunshine, daydream, walking in the tall trees, going where the wind goes
    Blooming like a red rose, breathing more freely,
    Ride our singin, Ill walk you in the morning sunshine
    Sunshine, daydream. sunshine, daydream. walking in the sunshine.

    was supposedly written about altamount.

    all real deadheads know that there’s only one song. each time they got to the heart of it, they just picked up where they’d left off the last time. this is a relatively short version, but it’s the night after what many consider to have been its best version, and the single best dead show, ever.

  11. Once while at a party I got separated from a friend, we both did various substances…. I saw my friend on the couch and asked her what was wrong and she started shrieking and saying go away. Apparently, it was revealed later, that I was a giant talking tooth brush. Maybe she had guilt over insufficient oral hygiene? I also chased mythical “snow tigers” down a friend’s street while altered. The best part was that I got other people to buy into my silly drug induced belief.

      reading what the principles say is what I would imagine listening to a NASA launch’s internal technical comms would be like, without as much swearing.

      Too cool. 😉
