HUGE live blogging DocuDharma News!

hlmt

Aidan Delgado, author of The Sutras of Abu Ghraib: Notes from a Conscientious Objector in Iraq, will be online  at DocuDharma today, Sunday, October 28th at 9 PM Eastern to talk about the book and his experiences in Iraq.

The son of a diplomat, he spent his childhood and teen years overseas.  He lived in Thailand, Senegal, and Egypt.  He signed a contract to enlist in U.S. Army Reserves on 9\/11.

Enlisted as a mechanic in a military police company, when his unit was assigned to Abu Ghraib his Arabic language skills became especially valuable.  He converted to Buddhism just before his training.  The book (reviewed by On The Bus) is the account of his experiences as a soldier and his struggle to achieve conscientious objector status.

The full disclosure part-

I’m an Admin at DocuDharma.  I’m kind of hoping that the special event that we’re holding this evening AT 9 PM EASTERN is going to draw a few eyeballs.  While you’re there you might want to check out a few of our regular contributors like myself and budhydharma, Turkana and Armando, Robyn (better known here as rserven) and Magnifico.

It’s kind of a quirky place, we have a very liberal promotion policy, lots of Contributing Editors (over 30), and interesting content like RiaD’s online novel.

We have Open Threads called Pony Parties at 9 am, noon, and 6 pm.  These appear in the ‘Recent Essays’ section.  There are News Open Threads at 7:30 am (mishima) and 4 pm (Magnifico).  Monday though Friday 6 am Robyn runs Muse in the Morning.  Midnights on Sundays, Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays I post The Stars Hollow Gazette, Saturdays and Tuesdays budhydharma posts Igelsia, Fridays mishima has Asian News.

Lots of other stuff goes on too, though I will admit we are at our slowest in the morning.

If you you decide to click through, you will have to register to participate in the live blog.  We are a dKos friendly place and your dKos handle will do just fine, though you don’t have to use it.  The Soapblox engine will send back a random password to your email (required) so you can log on.

Comments are instant and you will be able to publish an essay tomorrow.

Well, 24 hours, which is why I’m going to recommend you Register before 8 pm Eastern so you can be sure you can participate if you want to (though you should feel free to jump in any time).

Did I publish a Welcome New Users?  Well of course I did, but they are the standard Soapblox controls that most of you who are not exclusively dKos will recognize without a problem.

On The Bus, one of our other Admins, published a much better (and Rescued) diary here.

Hope you tune in and have some fun, remember you have to register to participate.

  1. I really need a much higher resolution link to an approved image source for the book cover.

Otherwise this is as good as it gets.

I’m open to suggestions about publication time.

  2. in your  pre-whore. So there!

…and Pony Parties are 9, 3, and 9.  Sunday music retrospective.  It’s the sound track to my life.  To get an idea, I’m 59.5.

I’m still not sure if there is a good time to post A Wedding here tonight.  I can put it on the Recent List.  It is now done…maybe. ,->

  3. But in case of goblins, will seasoned Big D users be supplied with smite buttons (LOL)?

Seriously, looking forward to what the author has to say, although a certain weather compromise might steal the time away here.

  4. I’m going for 6.  budhy up at 7, could use another push at 8, 9 pm show time.

    If anyone wants to volunteer.

  5. …or able to help with the pimping, as I have real life commitments.  But good luck!

  6. The question I always ask of Iraq veterans (for my own reasons) is what their thoughts about Tommy Franks are.  If someone would ask that question for me, I’d appreciate it.

Things get rolling in about 30 min.?

  7. To relay enough information en mass to these troops serving gallantly in the armed forces about the current conditions right here at home.  Such that it may cause them to rethink their “patriotism” in serving Dick’s Halliburton and only the profit margins thereof.

  8. for Docuharma!
