What’s Better Than Meta?

Getting paid to write about Meta.

Go visit and comment there so I can keep scamming them.

The Eternal Struggle

THESE are the times that try men’s souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives every thing its value. Heaven knows how to put a proper price upon its goods; and it would be strange indeed if so celestial an article as FREEDOM should not be highly rated.

Burma: Systematic Rape/Murder and That Chevron Ad

Riddle me this: Why is the largest “progressive” blog in the world advertising Chevron, an undeniable culprit in the state sponsored torture, rape and murder of innocent Burmese women and children? And before you say the all too familiar phrase “because its his blog and he can do what he wants” please join me below:

This Way to the Camps: Homeland Security Directive

This Presidential Directive is copied and pasted in its entirety from the White House site –
http://www.whitehous…

This is exactly what Naomi Klein, Naomi Wolf and other thinkers on social justice and democracy have been warning us about.

I will be most interested in seeing your thoughts and comments, and of course Stonemason’s – whose idea it was to post this.

Pretty Bird Woman House has NO House!

Cross Posted at the Daily Kos under betson08

In late April, after Amnesty International released a report on the problem of sexual violence against Native American women that included a story about the how the Pretty Bird Woman House was in danger of closing its doors, this community rallied to its support. I did too, and then joined a team of volunteers to support the long-term viability of the shelter. On that front, I have some good news, some bad news, and a request for help.

The good news is that this fall Georgia Littleshield, the shelter’s director, procured a 3-year Federal grant for the program to pay salaries and travel expenses. This means that during the summer, the shelter would not have been able to assist women in danger or advocate for a woman in court had the netroots not provided interim support.

The bad news is that the building they were in was broken into so many times by people who smashed through exterior walls to gain entrance that it became unsafe safe for anyone to stay there. So, the Pretty Bird Woman House lost its house. To add insult to injury, somebody torched the building the day after they moved out.

“Six Lies About Iran”

Usually if I run across a story or an article on current events that particularly catches my attention I’ll quote from it and comment with my interpretation.

Back in February though, I found one of those rare gems I occasionally stumble over while looking for something else, like walking through a forest and cresting a hill or suddenly stepping into a clearing and spotting something that grabs your attention before you realize it was there.

So, this time, with no interpretation of my own or comment other than to say it says what it says better than I ever could, I’m just reproducing an entire article.

Please give Rosa your entire attention:

instruments of change or of doom and gloom

there are two very good essays on the front page examining the ways in which your mortgages or home equity loans can explode in your face. what can be done about this? do we unleash this info and get our state legistlators enacting some kind of laws, even temporary, that prevent such a thing from happening?

there are so many great commentaries at this and other blogs about the tough and dire straits in which we find ourselves.

but i find myself shrinking away from reading anything more. i can barely open a blog for fear of what i might read next.

Holy Crap on a (Chinese Made) Pogo Stick

——————-

I’ll be a monkey’s uncle.

In a diary on mortgages, now frontpaged, a comment was made about the Chinese moving in to your home when the proverbial shit hits the fan.

My initial reaction – that sounds just a tad farfetched to me. After all, China does own a lot of our government debt, but I seriously doubt they own much in the way of our personal debt.

Well, since Google is our friend, I decided I better test my theory before spouting off.

And thus, the title of this essay.

Looking for political leaders…look south

I have become convinced that if we want to find courageous leadership these days, we might want to look south. There are some very interesting developments going on in various countries in South America. We hear alot about Hugo Chavez in Venezuela, and maybe a bit less about Evo Morales in Bolivia. And after the news that Chile had elected the first woman as President, Michelle Bachelet, we haven’t heard much about her.

But I had heard nothing about President Rafael Correa of Ecuador until I found a wonderful story over at The Latin Americanist. He has let the world know that he is willing to continue allowing a US military base in his country if we allow him to establish one in Miami. Here’s some bits on the story from Reuters:
