Four at Four

The news and open thead at 4 o’clock in the afternoon, Eastern.

  1. Reuters reports Protester waves blood-colored hands in Rice’s face. “An anti-war protester waved blood-colored hands in U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice’s face at a congressional hearing on Wednesday and shouted ‘war criminal!’, but was pushed away and detained by police.” Rice was “unfazed” and Rep. Tom Lantos, chairman of the House Foreign Relations committee, shouted “Out!” as the police hauled her off. Lantos, fearing protests, demanded the ejection of Code Pink members. “‘What are you doing, what are you doing?’ the protesters screamed as police dragged them away.”

Real nice democracy we have here. Rep. Lantos is the Champion of Civility. Of course, maybe Code Pink hit too close to home, since Lantos too has blood on his hands. His enthusiastic support for war with Iraq back in 2002 helped Bush win ‘bipartisan’ support for his war.

AP reports “Despite the protesters’ effort to focus on the war, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and Iran dominated the hearing. Lantos, D-Calif., asked whether the Bush administration was doing enough to pressure Egypt to crack down on Hamas sympathizers and whether Bush was calling for the peace conference to salvage his political legacy.”

  2. In a Trillion-dollar war, Leonard Doyle of The Independent reports that Afghanistan and Iraq set to cost more than Vietnam and Korea. By the time George W. Bush leaves the White House, he will have spent over $1 trillion on war and occupation.

There are also disturbing signs that Mr Bush is preparing an attack on Iran during his remaining months in office. He has demanded $46bn (£22.5bn) emergency funds from Congress by Christmas and included with it a single sentence requesting money to upgrade the B-2 “stealth” bomber.

Bush is wrapping himself and his request in the flag to disguise his latest request. On Monday, when he made the request, the glorious Leader stood beside the family of a dead U.S. marine. Apparently, spending more on war will bring their soldier back to life. When are Americans going to stop falling for this false patriotism?

The full amount requested for this fiscal year is now $196.4bn. The US is on course to spend a total of $806bn fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq, more than on any war it has fought since the Second World War. With interest payments this tops $1trn.

Despite their expense, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq are less of an economic burden (at 4.2 per cent of GDP) than earlier wars. The 1990-91 Gulf War cost $88bn, the Korean War cost $456bn (12.2 per cent of GDP) and the Vietnam War, $518bn (9.4 per cent of GDP). By comparison the Second World War cost more than 40 per cent of GDP.

There now, the Bush administration is doing their wars on the cheap. Don’t you feel better about your country? Just look at the results! Afghanistan slipping back into the hands of the Taliban. Iraq descending into chaos and a simmering civil war. 3,835 dead soldiers, 27,753 wounded. Unknown number of Afghans and Iraqis dead and, according to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, 4.5 million displaced and refugees in Iraq. Alls systems FUBAR. So, why not more war? Why not Iran?

The Pentagon wants to upgrade its fleet of stealth bombers so that they can deliver 30-tonne, satellite-guided bombs. The planes would be based on the British Indian Ocean island of Diego Garcia where hangars are being specially upgraded. These “bunker-buster” bombs are six times bigger than anything used by the air force and designed to destroy weapons of mass destruction facilities underground. Diego Garcia is also much closer to Iran than Missouri, where the bombers are based.

Why are the British even entertaining such a request from these madmen? Especially after glorious Leader’s World War III threat? Not to mention Cheney’s threat.

This weekend Vice-President Dick Cheney stepped up the rhetoric, warning of “serious consequences” if Iran refuses to stop enriching uranium and said the US would not permit it to get nuclear weapons. Iran denies that the enrichment is linked to a nuclear weapons programme and says it is entirely peaceful.

The time has come to put humanity before patriotism nationalism. More war, with Iran or any other nation, is insanity.

The Power Of No

Thank you Chris Dodd.

This is Leadership, this IS how it works.

Until one person says no, evil cannot be stopped. Until one respected figure, one LEADER, finds the courage to step forward and OPPOSE, weaker people, not finding the courage within themselves, have nowhere to turn and no one to follow.

The sad, no….the horrifying part, is that it is not one of the leading candidates, the ‘mainstream’ candidates, the ‘electable’ candidates who stood up for our rights and for the Rule of Law. Now after being led by Dodd, they are (seemingly a bit reluctantly) falling in line. Because the power of no cannot be denied.

Is our politicians learning?

Singular Point – What Comes After Outrage?

Thanks for the inspiration OPOL. And you, Nightprowlkitty.

I will focus my attention from now on to those who are able to do the right thing, from whatever walk of life they travel, powerful or with no power at all.  I am resolved.  I am not outraged and I am not ashamed.

OPOL said:

Torture is an abomination, dropping bombs on babies is an outrage, people deserve healthcare and good treatment, and lying to the people is no way to run a democracy.  All of these things are true.

One does not compromise with Straussians, neocons, chickenhawks or clueless bastards. People who still support George W. Bush, torture and war profiteering at this late stage of human history are beyond reason or persuasion.  There is no point whatsoever in worrying about how such people see things, what they might say, or how they might characterize our actions or arguments.  These people should not be appeased or wooed, they should be marginalized and driven back under the rocks from which they have slithered.

Happy United Nations Day

Today is United Nations Day, or the anniversary of the signing of the UN Charter in 1945.

It’s hard to remember now, in the ethos of the so-called post 9/11 world, but the U.N. did have significance once upon a time.  And perhaps, in a post-Bush world, it will have signifcance again.

in Other news… International Edition! (with bonus Barack)

Welcome to a weekly roundup of news related to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and otherwise “other” community.

  • If you really need your heart broken today, check out the state of Iraqi LGBT, a group that has been running safe houses in Iraq for people who’d otherwise be targets for brutal anti-gay violence.  Two of their shelters are scheduled to close due to lack of funds, and a recent attempt to raise money yielded relatively slim results.  The situation in Iraq is dire:

Violence against all the gay community has intensified sharply since late 2005, when Iraq’s leading Shiite Muslim cleric, Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani, issued a fatwa (religious decree) which declared that gays and lesbians should be “killed in the worst, most severe way”.

Though there are many crises in Iraq, this is a rare one that we can have a direct impact on, since the houses provide shelter for victims under threat of violence.  Read through the site if you have the stomach for it, and please consider making a donation to maintain the shelters.

  • Congratulations to Singapore, which just decriminalized sodomy…. Whoops: only if you’re straight!  The Singapore parliament finally released legal restrictions on oral and anal sex, provided the participants = one man + one woman. In a seriously bizarre statement, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said that the government could not allow decriminalization of anti-family homosexuality, but then delivered this nugget:

Gays “are free to lead their lives and pursue their social activities,” the Prime Minister said, citing the existence of gay websites and gay bars…

Lee said keeping the statute unchanged, while not aggressively enforcing it, remained the best option.

  • In happier news, I’m sure you’ve heard that some character in some ludicrously popular series was apparently gay.  Major props to author J. K. Rowling, who just assured that her novels will be burned in schools for many decades to come.

Seriously, major props to her: there’s no reason she had to go back and announce that a dead character in a completed series was gay, other than to stick it to the fundies.  Maybe I’ll actually read her books now, in gratitude!

African American Leaders on Equal Rights For Gays

There can be no doubt that Senator Barack Obama is a proponent of gay rights. There should be no question on that point. But in their zealous defense of their candidate regarding the McClurkin controversy, some Obama supporters have argued that a strong defense of gay rights alienates African American voters. This is not borne out by the positions taken by these African American leaders.

John Lewis:

FROM TIME to time, America comes to a crossroads. With confusion and controversy, it’s hard to spot that moment. We need cool heads, warm hearts, and America’s core principles to cleanse away the distractions.

We are now at such a crossroads over same-sex couples’ freedom to marry. It is time to say forthrightly that the government’s exclusion of our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters from civil marriage officially degrades them and their families. It denies them the basic human right to marry the person they love. It denies them numerous legal protections for their families.

This discrimination is wrong. We cannot keep turning our backs on gay and lesbian Americans. I have fought too hard and too long against discrimination based on race and color not to stand up against discrimination based on sexual orientation. I’ve heard the reasons for opposing civil marriage for same-sex couples. Cut through the distractions, and they stink of the same fear, hatred, and intolerance I have known in racism and in bigotry.

Al Sharpton:

[S]ome high-profile black ministers continue to employ an agenda focused solely on sexually-based themes, like denying a women’s right to choose an abortion or a gay couple’s right to marry, to rally their congregations and drive a wedge through our people.

Not only are they speaking narrowly on the issues of gay marriage and abortion, but even as the Supreme Court is today taking on affirmative action, there has been silence from the black church.

Many African-Americans recognize the narrowness of scope of these beliefs. To that end, we held a conference — The National Conference and Revival for Social Justice in the Black Church — in Dallas, Texas, last week where more than 100 ministers restated and reemphasized what issues are of dire importance to the black populace as a whole.

David Dinkins:

At times ebullient, at times seemingly close to tears of joy, Mayor David N. Dinkins defied his detractors yesterday and joined a rousing dance at an outdoor celebration in Greenwich Village with the Irish lesbians and gay men he had joined in Saturday’s abuse-marred St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

“The behavior of some people yesterday was despicable,” the Mayor declared as scores of people at the party in Sheridan Square surged around him on a springlike afternoon, chanting his name over and over and singing “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow.”

“You did the right thing!” someone shouted.

“We all did the right thing,” Mr. Dinkins responded.

Yes of course, like of all our society, there is homophobia in the African-American community. But to portray this unacceptable view as dominant in the African-American political makeup is simply false.

“We The People!” -Charlie Chaplin Speaks…

I ask you to watch the video below, let it empower you, as it has empowered me!
I am going to Boston on Saturday for the demonstration, and this video has given me so much inner strength…
I will yell, yes, I will yell very loudly…
I want my voice heard…
I want to inspire all those who haven’t yet decided to stand up for what they believe in…
I don’t want to have to set up another “Arlington East” on my beach…

I encourage ALL able bodies to get to a demonstration near you, there is no finer moment in history…we are knee deep in a fascist, warmongering state, we MUST trudge through the crap before we can rise ourselves up and out of this mess we find ourselves in.

Let Us All Unite!

Pony Party, sorry, but some bad news

This is Matt….or, was.  Matt was the nephew of my ex-husband’s partner.  Matt was 21.  Matt was killed Sunday night.

I never had the opportunity to meet Matt, but my children have.  I know his mother, his grandmother, and, of course, his uncle.  He was well liked as well as being loved; a sweet kid and a good man.

1 US boosts oversight for Iraq contractors
By MATTHEW LEE and ANNE GEARAN, Associated Press Writers
14 minutes ago

WASHINGTON – Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Tuesday ordered new measures to improve government oversight of private guards who protect U.S. diplomats in Iraq, including tighter rules of engagement and a board to investigate any future killings.

The steps, recommended by an independent review panel she created after last month’s deadly Baghdad shooting involving Blackwater USA, would also require contractors to undergo training intended to make them more sensitive to Iraqi culture and language.

The changes to rules of engagement would bring the State Department closer to military rules.

Muse in the Morning

The muses are ancient.  The inspirations for our stories were said to be born from them.  Muses of song and dance, or poetry and prose, of comedy and tragedy, of the inward and the outward.  In one version they are Calliope, Euterpe and Terpsichore, Erato and Clio, Thalia and Melpomene, Polyhymnia and Urania.

It has also been traditional to name a tenth muse.  Plato declared Sappho to be the tenth muse, the muse of women poets.  Others have been suggested throughout the centuries.  I don’t have a name for one, but I do think there should be a muse for the graphical arts.  And maybe there should be many more.

Please join us inside to celebrate our various muses…

Why Is The Middle East So Volatile?

How did we get here? Why is there so much strife in the Middle East? Why are there so many deadly competing cultural, national, political and economic interests there? What is the history behind it all? How can we understand it all without spending years and years becoming becoming scholars of Comparative Religion or Historians?

There is no easy way, but the following two 90 second animated Flash maps, courtesy of Maps Of War, can help to give us a good nutshell summary of answers to questions that have perplexed and caused untold misery and death for centuries.
