in Other news…

Welcome to a weekly roundup of news related to the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, and otherwise “other” community.

  • Civil Unions are not equal to Marriage.  That’s the finding of a recent commission on New Jersey’s attempt to give same-sex couples full and equal partnership under the law while appeasing those who cringe at the expansion of the word “marriage”.  From a New York Times editorial:

It is hardly a surprise that New Jersey’s civil union law is not working very well. During the past several weeks, dozens of same-sex couples have testified that the law has not provided the equal benefits that were promised when it passed.

Now, the special commission that heard the testimony has made it official: the civil union law has been a “failure.” Frank Vespa-Papaleo, who is chairman of the commission as well as the state’s director of civil rights, said the law is not as effective “as if the word ‘marriage’ were used.”

I don’t know if I’d call it a resounding “failure” if only a few private employers are dodging the law (most couples will still get benefits, and the state recognizes them as full and equal), but there’s no doubt that separate-but-equal status will always encourage dissenters to focus on the “separate” instead of the “equal”.

  • Speaking of which, laws that specifically invoke “married couples” are often cynical ways of passing anti-gay legislation without having to wear one’s bigotry on one’s sleeve.  Throw in an extra phrase like “for the good of the children”, and you have toxic legislation like the Arkansas ballot initiative to outlaw adoption and foster parenting … except for married couples.  It’s for the good of the children, of course.  (n/t Mombian)  A nice touch: the Arkansas News Bureau calls it what it is: a gay adoption ban.
  • Terrance at the Republic of T has dedicated this round of installments of his excellent Hate Crimes Project to anti-trans violence.  Today’s focuses on the murder of Thalia Mosqueda, a trans woman whose murderer argued that he was disgusted by her alleged advances because “he wasn’t gay”:

Panic is a strange thing. We know all about “gay panic,” but what about “trans panic,” which seems to be at the root of so many anti-trans hate crimes like the murders of Bella Evangelista, Emonie Spaulding, Ukea Davis & Stephanie Thomas, and Nireah Johnson, just to name a few?

    Well-worth reading the whole series.

Have the Democrats found a brain? Do they have an actual plan….or perhaps a clue when it comes to who they are dealing with?

Bridge players speak out; Can you trump this?

A U.S. team of world-class bridge players, tired of being asked to defend their country’s indefensible actions, disavowed George W. Bush’s policies — and risked their livelihood. All sorts of penalties are being threatened.

All they did was hold up a handmade sign saying, “We did not vote for Bush.”  But they did it at a public event in China.

In the polite, refined world of duplicate bridge, it rivals the black power salute of Tommie Smith and John Carlos at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City.

Which leads to the question: If they can do that, what are we going to do Friday, Iraq Moratorium Day #3?

Pony Party

Sigh…

…ok, so i usually do the a.m. pony parties on the day before, and auto-publish for 9 eastern..

…and, i DID that yesterday…only to find out that the interesting story i was discussing was probably not true….

…and it’s after midnight….and im tired…and ive had hella day finding out both that rose probably needs wrist fusion surgery and hannah probably needs jaw lengthening surgery….oh, and my wingnut brother’s birthday celebration wherein he opined at length about Keith Olbermann’s “cluelessness”….and a basketball practice thrown in for good measure, wherein the 2 male coaches continued their ‘pissing contest’ for dominance (because we all need complete authority over a group of 12-14 year-old-girls, right?)…

so, here’s your frigging pony party….enjoy!!   😉

Dont rec it, though.  really….dont….     😉

Pony Party, WTF??

Keith just insinuated that this story isnt true…and I believe him…

…had 2 appointments with the kids today, brother’s birthday dinner, and then basketball practice with ‘thing 2’, and didn’t have time to research this or to see ‘early Keith’…and i’m not staying up to watch the whole re-broadcast…but i’m also too tired to re-do this “elephant party”…and i think the image of drunken, rampaging elephants can only HELP the overall democratic cause ;)….so i’m leaving this probably untrue story….

From the Yahoo!News story Hilton Tries to Help Drunken Elephants

Then opportunity for Hilton’s “global elephant campaign” knocked last month when six parched pachyderms broke into a farm in the state of Meghalaya and guzzled farmers’ homemade rice beer. The elephants went on a rampage, then uprooted an electricity pole and were jolted to death.

1 Domestic spying inquiry restarted at DoJ

By DEVLIN BARRETT, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON – The Justice Department has reopened a long-dormant inquiry into the government’s warrantless wiretapping program, a major policy shift only days into the tenure of Attorney General Michael Mukasey.

The investigation by the department’s Office of Professional Responsibility was shut down last year, after the investigators were denied security clearances. Gonzales told Congress that President Bush, not he, denied the clearances.

“We recently received the necessary security clearances and are now able to proceed with our investigation,” H. Marshall Jarrett, counsel for the OPR, wrote to Rep. Maurice Hinchey, D-N.Y. A copy of the letter, dated Tuesday, was obtained by The Associated Press.

Muse in the Morning

Muse in the Morning

The muses are ancient.  The inspirations for our stories were said to be born from them.  Muses of song and dance, or poetry and prose, of comedy and tragedy, of the inward and the outward.  In one version they are Calliope, Euterpe and Terpsichore, Erato and Clio, Thalia and Melpomene, Polyhymnia and Urania.

It has also been traditional to name a tenth muse.  Plato declared Sappho to be the tenth muse, the muse of women poets.  Others have been suggested throughout the centuries.  I don’t have a name for one, but I do think there should be a muse for the graphical arts.  And maybe there should be many more.

Please join us inside to celebrate our various muses…

Wake Up, Pakistan is Imploding

So much has happened over the last 48 hours that I cannot report it all. Also I am no expert on Pakisatan. But from what I have read,  it soumds like, once again, the US is continuing on a collision course with ‘reality’ only this time the tinder box has exponentially broader potential consequences. There’s more…

The Battle For America, Full Throttle Edition

The citizens of this nation need a good talking-to, not a talking point. It’s time for the citizens to stand up and insist that their elected officials perform their duties as public servants and defendants of the Constitution instead of as tin-plated demigods of political voodoo and power-plays.

Earlier tonight, in light of my posting of a video from 2004, I was encouraged to post some additional information about the video, the artist — anything, actually — just to get the video out in front of people. Here is that post.

IF you believe this is important and that no time should be wasted, then the first person to volunteer below to post it on DailyKos is welcomed to do so. I have used my Daily Diary there already.

Please provide a link back to here and to ePluribus Media’s new beta site.

Thank you.
