Pony Party, Holiday Giving

Military Cheer Packs is just one of many sites where you can send a package to a service-person….you can click the ‘donate’ link to send it randomly.  There’s also a link to submit the name of a ‘troop’ to be included to receive a package.

And we cant forget murrayewv’s excellent essay with links for donation to disaster relief in Mexico.

or there’s this, from Yahoo!News

Starting Monday, Nov. 12, Americans and Canadians will have the chance to add charity and innovation to holiday shopping lists. The One Laptop Per Child organization is offering the chance to purchase two XO laptops-one to be given to a child in the developing world, the other to keep or donate locally.

This is what would be considered an extremely low-end laptop, but i think it’s pretty cool that it can be powered solarly, by a foot-pump, or by a pull-string.  It’s a great way to distribute technology globally, even if you dont get as much technology as with a standard plug-in type….

And there’s always the option to just do something nice for someone you know who could use it….even if that someone is YOU!!

The ponies are set…they dont need care packages, laptops, or recommends…

  1. We usually donate Christmas gifts locally. Sadly, the Memphis area has many needy kids. I generally also give money to the local food bank at Thanksgiving and Christmas.

The adults don’t do gifts in our family but I will also fork cold hard cash over to the niece who is in college and must need money for something.

  2. I had to go check out the cheer packs and must say that I’m pretty impressed with what they are sending since I’ve gotten calls for that exact brand of beef jerky and M&Ms.  I also get calls for anything a little special to eat like the Swiss Colony sets with sausages and special crackers and mustards.  I suppose it feels like a Calgon moment.  The biggest hit was sending some smoked salmon that I bought at World Market that didn’t require refrigeration.

  3. I found this site Beads for Education and bought key chains for all my girlfriends. And one of my favorite places to shop when I need to buy gifts is Ten Thousand Villages. We have one of these shops near my house and it is a treasure!!

we always know someone who needs help…every year the recipiant changes.

We give to families with children, usually: a new set of pj’s & book for each child, a game they can all play together; usually socks & gloves for the adult(s); and eksmas dinner- a small ham or turkey, 5lbs of taters, 2 lbs onions, 2 lbs rice, 1 lg bag frozen grn. beans, 1 lg bag frozen cob corn…1 large bag oranges & a box of candy canes.

We started this the year we got married. We didn’t have much, but a guy had just been hired at MrD’s workplace…he’d been out of work for 4 mo. & his wife worked at mickeyD’s- they had 3 kids…and were very proud. We snuck over to their trailer dec.23 & left the box on the porch.

It felt so good we’ve done it every year.

  4. the “book aunt” to all my nieces and nephews because I give books for birthdays and christmas. Last summer one of my nieces (who happens to be a reading fanatic) got all nervous when I gave her sister a purse (that I had bought at 10,000 Villages) for her birthday. She was worried I had abandoned giving books. Gotta love that girl!!!
