The Manifesto Project SUCKS….as a name

The Manifesto Project needs a new name and new energy,

The Manifesto Projects purpose is to define what we stand for, for what we agree on…..what we are fighting for. An attempt to define delineate and describe our Goals. The idea is to also submit it to Daily Kos (and elsewhere?) for wide participation in discussion and refinement of what eventually be a document….of some kind….probably not named a Manifesto.

It is intended as a group project to collate, organize, select, rephrase if necessary and prioritize the existing submissions from these essays:

The pre-pre-Progressive Manifesto.

Announcing The Manifesto Project

Ask A Kossak, W/Free Answers! Manifesto Alert

The Manifesto Project: Submissions Please!

Final Preliminary Round: The Manifesto Project.

And to refine them into some form that can be either voted one or at least commented on by as many folks as possible to try to reach as much consensus as possible.

It is my thought and hope that by working on this together, we can not only produce something of worth to all progressives/liberals/Democrats as, at least, a starting point for discussion of values, ideals and policies that we all hold in common.

And more narrowly for Docudharma to not just help us define our goals and values, but as a way to work together as a community….to produce something together.

We still don’t now exactly how to go about it, we still don’t have a plan, we still in other words, have no idea what the fuck we are doing! That is why we need this whole community of smart, well dressed, good looking people ….AND you…..to help!

From a new name to a new format to a whole new idea all together of what it should be….take a little while and check out the essays and responses and the Wiki page that OTB set up and see wht you think and how you can contribute.

Of course there is NO stigma in not participating and no pressure to do so. People do best what they like and we want your best, so if you are not interested don’t sweat it! Maybe you will like the next project….hell maybe you will suggest the next project and we can all go to work on that!

What we need:

Participation

Organization

Collation

Presentation

Other stuff that ends with ation

The Manifesto Project can be found here…. and for God’s sake let’s come up with a better name….what the hell was I thinking!!!

The comments await!

  2. isn’t that what xerox machines do?

How about the Manifest Destiny Project?  It would be easier, because everything is already in place.  We could just sit back and watch.

  3. We have a bunch of information. On the Dharmapedia page I have pasted the shall we say….larger, more organized submissions.

We need to (perhaps?) develop categories for various issues and policies and ideas.

Then we need to place all of the submissions that fit that category into it.

Then go through the essays and find folks who were less organized in their submissions and cull and categorize those.

Then compile a list of all the issue etc. and see which were the most mentioned. We can then rank those, come up with a god form to present them and vote on them …..and then go to the next stage until we have a consensus list.

If this is your sort of thing or you just want to pitch in a bit….speak up!

    “The Pirahna Brothers”

At the age of fifteen Doug and Dinsdale started attending the Ernest Pythagoras Primary School in Clerkenwell.

When the Piranhas left school they were called up but were found by an Army Board to be too unstable even for National Service.

Denied the opportunity to use their talents in the service of their country, they began to operate what they called ‘The Operation’…

They would select a victim and then threaten to beat him up if he paid the so-called protection money. Four months later they started another operation which they called ‘The Other Operation’. In this racket they selected another victim and threatened not to beat him up if he didn’t pay them. One month later they hit upon ‘The Other Other Operation’. In this the victim was threatened that if he didn’t pay them, they would beat him up. This for the Piranha brothers was the turning point.

Therefore, I vote for “The Other Other Operation”.

  5. … the area I find myself more and more involved in is social justice (as sucky a term as manifesto, imo).

Started out doing NOLA diaries and essays.  Then got into the diversophere.  Now into migrant issues.  But the same theme runs through all of this — and I’m beginning to see it’s a global issue, not one limited to the US.

From the folks who lived in public housing and are now exiles from NOLA, to people of color who are obstructed from having a voice in our public dialogue because the very frames we use are, whether we realize it or not, in service to white privilege, to thinking that because undocumented migration is against the law it’s ok to torture folks in detention centers and terrorize them on the street, to what’s happening in Burma, to what’s happening to the millions of refugees from Iraq …

… it’s all about power, who has it and who does not.  It’s all about power making the law instead of the law serving justice and fairness.  It’s ultimately about people — people who distort the very meaning of law to oppress other people.

So anyway, I think whatever you call this, manifesto, true majority, the operation, social justice should be in there somewhere.  Global social justice — because the US has done its share to really fuck things up around the world.

  6. Just got home from assessing the condition of a shitload of archaeological ceramics so my head is a bit disoriented.

Seems to me what the manifesto is, is a vision statement with guiding principles from which goals can be derived and a strategic plan fabricated.

So, instead of manifesto, why not call it something like Progressive Principles or Guide to Sane Politics or Declaration of Responsible Progress or somethin…

I volunteered to help out with the organization side of things and haven’t yet heard back from exmearden about needed tasks. Even though I’m now working 6-7 days a week I’d still like to help out.

I think it is a worthwhile thing to do here, to get centered and organized.

we need to hit a chord and say what most of us are feeling

and for me, i’d like there to be lots of tomorrows for my nephews and their kids

let’s call it something lots of people understand and not use words that can be problematic (like change or progressive)

let’s give each other a chance to come together around an idea. i know there are people we will never ever work with. but there’s lots, i’m sure, who just don’t know they want to be with us.

  7. to it, kinda like “dharma.”  I think it sort of fits.  No body writes manifestos any more.  It sounds really retro.  Retro retro.  I had a writing teacher who said one of the stages of writing a paper was when you feeling like the whole idea, the whole project, the paper is ALL WRONG.  You throw the whole thing away–garbage.  It comes after a lot of other stages that I can’t remember right now.  But it isn’t the last stage, because some time after you throw the whole thing out and wash your hands of it, you go back and get it, and then just finish the damn thing.

  8. Bolivia Rising, I just found something called “A Formal Summons to World States by Indigenous First Nations and Peoples” that was just created a couple of weeks ago.

In it, they include 14 mandates (you can find them at the link above) and end with this:

The struggle is unceasing, we will continue our resistance until our time comes. We proclaim the 12th of October the “day of commencement of our struggles to save Mother Nature”.

From our families, homes, communities, peoples, whether in government or without, we ourselves are determining and directing our destinies, we ourselves are assuming the will and responsibility to live well that has been bequeathed to us by our ancestors, to expand, from the simplest and least complicated to the greatest and most complex, to construct horizontally and mutually, each and every one, the culture of patience, the culture of dialogue and fundamentally the Culture of Life.

By the dead, the heroes and martyrs that lend meaning to our lives through their utopias and longings, we strengthen our identity, our organizational processes and our struggles to build the unity of the peoples of the world and to restore the balance, saving life, humanity and the planet earth.

    Emphasis mine

I think this may be what Colbert is up to, we’ll wait and see.

  13. Dharma for Progressives: What Paths We Will Follow as if Reality Were Actually Able to Intrude Upon Us!

A charter is a directional document and a contract. It is designed to be clear, practical, and effective. It lays out privileges and responsibilities. For many centuries, (most famously in the Magna Carta) charters have been the instruments of demarcating the boundaries of political power. Thus, we should be aiming to create a Progressive Charter.

  15. ” The peace of one individual is small. The peace of many people together is big. When we see ourselves as separate from each other, our community, and from nature, then violence and strife arise. It is only when we understand our part in an overall unity that there is the possibility of peace on a large scale.”

  16. despite my desire for democracy and a constitution on the intertubes :p

Although it doesn’t seem to fit what we’re trying to do right now.  Maybe it should be like a 2 or 3 step document.  Start with a declaration, once ideas are collected move on to something more concrete. Naming the final document before the ideas are collected maybe inhibiting the process.  Let the final name develop once the structure and ideas are more apparent.

For some reason I keep thinking Declaration of Intent or Declaration of ________(Progressive, Future, Community, Dharmic <---if that's a word) Intent sounds appropriate for a starter document.

I’ve actually never used Wiki’s before, but I’d like to help.  Maybe I’ll try to edit some stuff this weekend, so if the whole thing burst into flames and crashes it might be my fault……
