A Special Faerie Tale

Once upon a time there was a very special little girl. She knew she was special because her parents told her so all the time. Even strangers would say (to her parents) ‘ Oh! Your little girl is so special!’

Her family moved a lot, so she’d never had any friends she’d known for a really long time. This didn’t bother her much at first, but as the years went by she felt more alone and more like an outsider, never truly fitting in, no matter where she was just a little…  special.

She left the big city and went to live in the woods with her sister & brother-in-law after her parents got divorced. She was needed to help with the new baby in order to make ends meet. Many said she was very smart because she excelled in school and graduated a year early by taking a summer school. She never thought so.  To make some money for herself she took a job as a waitress at a truck-stop on the highway, graveyard shift. Her life wasn’t at all what she’d dreamed of, but it was kind of… special.

One busy night at the diner, as the crowd began to thin, the girl looked up from wiping the counter just in time to see two new customers walk in. ‘Damn! I was so wanting to get a coupla drags…’ she muttered to herself. As they cross paths on opposite sides of the lunch counter, she looks over to assess them, a game she plays in her mind~ trying to guess what people will order just by looking at them. Wow!,she thinks, he’s… special.

The next night is not nearly as busy, but he comes in earlier and stays all night talking to her. Although her first impressions turn out to be completely wrong (he is from there, but is not much older than she~) they find they have much in common…

She follows him home after her shift ends, and they spend the day driving around looking for a new place for him to rent, laughing & talking, singing songs they both know. Over the course of the day they find many strange coincidences- both have brothers (& they are born on exactly the same day!); both have sisters (& from the descriptions, both have the same type personality); both are the baby of their family; both left school early & hang with an older crowd; they like the same music & books; they know many of the same people….

so many coincidences in fact, it seemed quite….. special.

She moves in with him the next day. They keep searching for a new place to live, looking far & wide for something affordable. About a week and a half later they get a call about a wonderful house they’d looked at~ the log cabin w/the huge fireplace & out buildings down on the river. The beautiful place that they felt was so… special.

‘The owners will only accept a married couple. I told them we were.’ he said. ‘Do you want to get married?’ She thinks about the past two weeks. He makes her laugh. He makes her think. He brings her coffee in bed and brushes her hair. He sings her love songs. He brings her lovely gifts: a bunch of dandelions,  a bottle of wine festooned with ribbons of every colour… (for your hair he said his twinkling elven eyes smiling)

He makes her feel… Special.

‘Yes’ she said.

And they lived happily ever after.

  1. isn’t just peachy when fairy tales come true? I bet Mr.D feels lucky to have you.

Is this a “warm up”, are you going to start writing more again? Is it your anniversary now or coming up? Do you thoroughly embarrass your children by huggin and kissin?

What a lovely story, thank you for sharing it with us.  On the other hand, I can’t quite believe how similar it is to my relationship with my hubby…but it’s only been 12 years with many, many more to come I hope.

Last night we had 5 four-year-old girls spend the night for a slumber party.  After dinner and games, we watched “A Fairy Tale-A True Story”, so this morning fairies are on my mind, I’m happy to see a diary this morning about them…..erm…you!  And you know how I feel about fairies!!!!

  2. life can be so queer…always finding ways to get us where we need to be at the right times…

  3. and all the more wonderful because it’s true.  Wishing both “special” ones many, many more special years together.

I hope that special feeling lasts eternally.  You are a special person and certainly deserve to feel that.  I bet you make Mr. D feel just as special.  ðŸ™‚

  5. 30 years? That’s Awesome!  What a love story – thanks for sharing.

My 10th wedding anniversary is in April.  Ours is also a story of coincidences and instant recognition.  I’ll think about posting that sometime.
