What John McCain Told Me, and What it Says About How Far He’s Fallen

Update: Through a spokesperson with the colorful name Tucker Bounds, McCain has denied telling me he didn’t vote for Bush in 2000. “It’s not true,” Bounds told the Washington Post, “and I ask you to consider the source.”

My sentiments exactly — because John McCain has a long history of issuing heartfelt denials of things that were actually true.

He denied ever talking with John Kerry about his leaving the GOP to be Kerry’s ’04 running mate — then later admitted he had, insisting: “Everybody knows that I had a conversation.”

He denied admitting that he didn’t know much about economics, even though he’d said exactly that to the Wall Street Journal. And the Boston Globe. And the Baltimore Sun.

He denied ever having asked for a budget earmark for Arizona, even though he had. On the record.

He denied that he’d ever had a meeting with comely lobbyist Vicki Iseman and her client Lowell Paxon, even though he had. And had admitted it in a legal deposition.

And those are just the outright denials. He’s also repeatedly tried to spin away statements he regretted making (see: 100-year war, Iraq was a war for oil, etc.).

So, yes, by all means, “consider the source.

  1. Republicans are liars and cheats and thieves and bullies and torturers and mass murderers and war criminals.

And this particular one thinks nothing of dumping their injured wife who stood by them during 5 years of captivity for a prettier richer drug addict charity thief trophy wife to advance his political ambitions.

good catch…glad you brought it here.

  2. At this point I don’t think he cares if he is President of the Loyal Order of Elk’s or the United States.

He just needs to be President of something.

    Action Item!

If there are any Dharmites in Arizona, could you please bribe the Loyal Order to offer the Presidency to McSame, stat?  Perhaps we can head off this ego at the pass.  HEH!

  3. We have it on the best authority that McCain is Diogenes’ honest man! You know, straight shooter, maverick, calls ’em like he sees ’em, etc.

  4. Here’s how it looks to me.  McCain is suffering from untreated and unacknowledged PTSD.  Always an authoritarian, his time as a POW left him with a desperate need to be embedded in an authority structure.  He feels safe only when he feels aligned with dominant power.  Far from being the straight-talking maverick, he is constantly, and unconsciously, trying to sense which side his bread is buttered on.  To McCain, the truth is whatever the most immediate authority says it is, and he is trying to align with that.  His conflicting, almost random, pronouncements are consistent with this view.

  5. . . . the MSM might actually report it!  Maybe.

lies, or perhaps more, a bone-penetrating mist of lies coming from Republicans and McCain…

it’s just a service to see them collected and easily documented. Have any of our Twit Journalists seen this, yet?

And remember McCain was found “mainly innocent” in the Keating Savings & Loan ripoff. Must be a thousand more items like this.

I don’t want to link to rightwingers, but if you google “McCain pow mia” you’ll have a clue as to why many ex-vets, especially on the right, hate his guts. You can actually see a photo of McCain, who with Kerry headed the MIA/POW Commission, hugging the very Vietnamese man in charge of his torture when he was a POW himself. It’s an eerie reminder of the Bush hug.

An odd fellow, this, to raise the spectre of “Manchurian Candidate.”

There’s a lot of talk–none of which I troubled to verify, and most of dating back to the 80s and 90s–of how, when the Vietnamese became aware it was the son of Admiral McCain, commander of US forces in the Pacific, they were holding prisoner… well, let’s just say it’s claimed John became a regular media figure in North Vietnam, and started living in better circumstances.

This is what they say. Could all be lies, but if anyone knows… Chris Matthews? Timmeh?
