Superclass points out the revolving door between government and the so called “private” business sector. I have watched prestigious domestic manufacturing companies of specialized scientific equipment over a span of 20 years either evaporate or “go to the dark side” as we have come to call it. This one is a product of business assholianism plain and simple.

Now at first glance I want to take a spectral sample, if I wanted play station I would have bought a Play Station.
Ocean Optics was a small independent company with a seriously great idea that is transforming the optical industry. That idea took the price tag of a useable instrument down from about $35,000 to $2,000. The unit was compact, fiber optic coupled and the software was easy to set up and functional. The product sold itself and the company grew leaps and bounds.

Shit,now we are in trouble.
“Built in” microprocessors are obsolete after the first 100 hours.
“Built in display”, ya, I want a 30 inch plasma with scroll, pan and zoom functions not a 2X2 inch scroll through a stupid menu tree system crap.
Maybe just maybe I might want the ability to program my own experiments based upon what I really want to do? Well the friendly founding father set up the ssytem based upon a common and well known software package until, well I think until the MBAssholes sought to extract further profit margins by releasing proprietary beta tested crap too early and dropping support of the previous version.
The only saving grace is that the scientist has made the very real improvement of removable gratings and slits.
Still I see this drive, the drive to sell more stuff.
