Real pony party: Kentucky Derby Day!

Please forgive me for usurping an open thread, but: I cannot believe that a site which has terrific pony parties almost every day of the week is ignoring the very real ponies running this afternoon in the 134th Kentucky Derby.

The last triple crown winner was Affirmed in 1978:

Affirmed is also known for his famous rivalry with Alydar, whom Affirmed met ten times, including in all three Triple Crown races, and who became the first racehorse to finish second in all three Triple Crown races.

Somebody, please have a mint julep for me…I only wish I’d seen that Triple Crown at the time, not (belatedly) on YouTube.

In today’s race, Big Brown was the favorite as of this morning.  The NY Times has an interesting side story:

There is a lot riding on the Kentucky Derby for two charities in Louisville. Two corporations have bet on different horses, and if either of those wins, the charity chosen by the victorious bettor will be $10,000 richer.

Thus, if Big Brown, the leanly sculptured colt who is sponsored by United Parcel Service – also known as Big Brown – crosses the finish line first, U.P.S. will donate $5,000 to Metro United Way, and the KFC Corporation, operator of the chicken restaurant chain, will match that gift.

Should Colonel John end up wearing the roses, KFC will donate $5,000 to Colonel’s Scholars, a KFC program that provides college scholarships to needy students, and U.P.S. will make a matching donation.

Here’s hoping for another pony that can go the distance in all three races!  Cheers!
