Investigation Leads To Action

32,000 Vets To Be Warned About Suicide-Linked Drug

ABC News/Washington Times Investigation Leads To Action

32,000 to be notified? 32,000 Veterans, how many are probably suffering from PTSD/Depression already, apparently are in this program unearthed by ABC News and the Washington Times, 32,000!

Responding to an ABC News/Washington Times investigation, the Veterans Administration plans to inform 32,000 veterans that they are using a drug linked to suicide or violent behavior.

And we already know where the administration stood on this from the previous reports:

The Bush White House had initially defended the VA’s handling of the Chantix experiment.

Brought back to light in this one.

Scottie McClellan testifying

Watch the testimony on C-SPAN3.

UPDATE: Also being televised on MSNBC

Scott McClellan is testifying before the House Judiciary Committee this morning.

It just started moments ago.  (10 AM Eastern)

A Retraction

After careful study it seems even great news may be only the usual smoke and mirrors of engineered diversion.  Benjamin Fulford, that Forbes Magazine Asian chief reported that Asian secret societies declared war on the western secret societies upon learning that SARS was a race specific bio-weapon. The eastern block threatened them with economic ruin and assasinations.  The western secret societies promised “CHANGE”.  For a time it seemed true when the western world started to mention admission of the Asian one in global affairs and organizations traditionally western dominated.  Well, I think not.

One Mind at a Time

Crossposted from The Wild Wild Left

I spoke to a right-leaning homeowner yesterday, owner of the mansion on the huge hill we had to ball-cart four 8 foot Pines Trees at and plant on his acreage. I changed his thinking.

He was a talker.

Ultimately, I made a statement to him, which brought him into full agreement with me:

No, Sir, I think the bigger problem is that Americans never want to worry about a fire hydrant in their yard until their house is on fire. Then and only then do they want to cough up the money and time and allow one to be put in their yard. Then its too late.

U.S. Says Exercise by Israel Seemed Directed at Iran

By MICHAEL R. GORDON and ERIC SCHMITT

Published: June 20, 2008

WASHINGTON – Israel carried out a major military exercise earlier this month that American officials say appeared to be a rehearsal for a potential bombing attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities.

Several American officials said the Israeli exercise appeared to be an effort to develop the military’s capacity to carry out long-range strikes and to demonstrate the seriousness with which Israel views Iran’s nuclear program.

More than 100 Israeli F-16 and F-15 fighters participated in the maneuvers, which were carried out over the eastern Mediterranean and over Greece during the first week of June, American officials said.

Taliban ambassador wielded power within Guantanamo

By Tom Lasseter | McClatchy Newspapers

KABUL, Afghanistan – When U.S. guards frog-marched Abdul Salam Zaeef through the cellblocks of Guantanamo, detainees would roar his name, “Mullah Zaeef! Mullah Zaeef!”

Zaeef, in shackles, looked at the guards and smiled.

“The soldiers told me, ‘You are the king of this prison,’ ” he later recalled.

Zaeef is the former Taliban ambassador to Pakistan, famous for his defiant news conferences after 9-11, in which he said the militant Islamist group would never surrender Osama bin Laden.

Midwestern towns wonder whether to rebuild after floods

Some businesses and residents have already thrown in the towel.

By P.J. Huffstutter, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer

8:48 PM PDT, June 19, 2008

NEW HARTFORD, IOWA — A small sign taped to the glass front door of the town’s hardware store still pleads for donations to the victims of the tornado.

Less than four weeks ago, a funnel cut down the northern edge of this farming town of nearly 650 people. The wind flung tractors more than a mile, crumbled Civil War tombstones and killed two people.

Then, before the white roses had wilted in their cemetery urns, the rest of the town was destroyed — by a flood.

When Beaver Creek swelled June 8, the tributary of the Cedar River swallowed dirt levees and miles of rolling cornfields.

It has taken years of learning and self-examination to come to an understanding of myself and gender as it applies to my experience, tentative though they still may remain.  According to some, it was unnecessary labor.  Everyone is an expert on gender.  Without any study…or even very much thought.  They know so much more than I do, to the point where they can so easily invalidate my existence.

Sorry…

Sorry about your privacy, which I took when I listened in on your phone calls, but as the Attorney General stipulated, at the behest of the President, I was hunting terrorists, so… it must’ve been really awful when your brother drank himself to death.

“Death By Detention”-  Breakthrough Video

In the wake of numerous press reports detailing the deaths of 83 people in ICE custody since its inception five years ago, countless cases of sick or mentally ill immigration detainees denied even the most basic care they require, the illegal detention of legal residents and citizens, expedited criminal hearings of those apprehended in immigration raids without providing basic legal representation or judicial review, and the illegal drugging of both detainees and  deportees, there have been growing calls for the reform of the immigration detention system.

Writing in the Raw: Juneteenth

I hate maintenance.  I don’t make the bed in the morning because it’ll just need to be made again the next day.  Our house needs painting.  A few years ago it was painted.  My friend the painter did an excellent job–prepared the surface, used quality paint, applied it well.  And still my house needs painting.

Some have tried to find permanent solutions to the painting problem.  Sadly, vinyl siding turned out to have some flaws, as Judith Helfand made devastatingly clear in her movie Blue Vinyl.  Alas, there is always a price to pay, and anyway, not a damn thing is permanent.  Check out granite gravestones from the nineteenth century.  Humans are not the only things who pass this way but a while.  Alas, poor granite.

In short, I wish progress was permanent, I wish victories lasted, I wish people didn’t always keep acting like . . . people.

The Emancipation Proclamation was issued on January 1, 1863, but the slaves in Galveston just kept on a-slavin’.  Two and a half years later, on June 19, 1865, federal troops arrived on Galveston Island and General Gordon Granger read General Order No. 3:

The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor. The freedmen are advised to remain quietly at their present homes and work for wages. They are informed that they will not be allowed to collect at military posts and that they will not be supported in idleness either there or elsewhere.

Hooray!  Juneteenth (a portmanteau of June 19th) marks the beginning of “absolute equality of personal rights” between former slaves and their owners.  Our blissful coexistence in equality since that date is well documented. . . . Is that murmuring from the masses I hear?  Jim Crow?  Plessy v. Ferguson?  Damn, there’s always more maintenance.  I hate it.

And while we’re on the subject, here’s another aspect of delicious freedom which may be in need of further tinkering: “The freedmen are advised to remain quietly at their present homes and work for wages.”  The life and death of Maria Isabel Vasquez Jimenez comes to mind.  I mean there’s slavery, and then there’s slavery. Bonded labor,  indentured servant, what’s in a name? A slave by any other name would be as debased.

Abrams: McCain: “I really didn’t Love America, Until I was deprived of Her Company”

Developing on “ Verdict with Dan Abrams” tonight, Abrams and a panel are discussing (arguing) about some information about a remark that McCain has made several times:

“I really didn’t love America until I was deprived of Her company.”

The one quoted in the headline above has been repeated by McCain in various versions.

More below the fold:

Iowa is Saved! Bush and McCain Both Visit on Thursday (Updated)

Hooray for us Iowans!  Our long regional nightmare is over!

President Bush visited Cedar Rapids and Iowa City today to personally vanquish the Godless floods that have caused so much damage over the last two weeks.  And John McCain visited Columbus Junction, IA, to vanquish things a few miles downstream from the President.  They shrewdly made separate trips so as to maximize the disruption to local recovery efforts.
