Humans Only Change Through Crisis

Will they?

Now that even The Shepherds are starting to ask questions? AP: Is everything seemingly spinning out of control?

I hate dehumanizing my seven billion brothers and sisters by calling them sheep. But after spending fifty years on this planet with them, it is tough not to make the comparison. I do not think less of them for their self-involvement, life on this planet is tough. There is work to do to keep the children fed and teach them right from wrong. Friends and neighbors to care for, lawns to be mowed, garages to be painted, things to do, places to go, people to see. Busy, busy busy. There is too much to do already, in their small portion of the world. They have learned since grade school that looking up, or god forbid, speaking up, is dangerous and just plain wrong. And when they do look up from the monumental task that keeping body and souls together on this little rock can be, what do they see?

Forces beyond their control, from all indications. Events and actions on a global scale that seem to bear no relation to their neighborhoods or living rooms. Especially through the warm insulating filter of their teevees, which tell them that everything is no more of a mess than usual and that their highest function is to consume, that if they consume correctly they will feel fulfilled. Their leaders reassure them and tell them not to worry. We know what we are doing, we will keep you safe, they say. Trust us, and go about your lives …well go about the lives that we proscribe for you….and do as you are told…don’t bother to pay attention…if you see that something is wrong, report it to the Authorities….we will keep you safe, we will keep you warm, we will take care of everything so that you can play your part. Go along to get along. You can’t fight City Hall. Trust us and consume. We are smart, you are busy. Trust us. The world is too complex for you to grasp, we know what we are doing. Trust us. If it seems like things do not make sense, that is because YOU do not understand. Trust us.

We have built a nice green meadow just for you…all you need to do is graze contentedly.

Oh, and a small reminder. We have dogs and guns and can do whatever we want. Don’t make trouble, keep your heads down, ignore the smells and sounds from the slaughterhouse just over the hill. Trust us.

Semi-reassuring words from the AP article:

American University historian Allan J. Lichtman notes that the U.S. has endured comparable periods and worse, including the economic stagflation (stagnant growth combined with inflation) and Iran hostage crisis of 1980; the dawn of the Cold War, the Korean War and the hysterical hunts for domestic Communists in the late 1940s and early 1950s; and the Depression of the 1930s.

“All those periods were followed by much more optimistic periods in which the American people had their confidence restored,” he said. “Of course, that doesn’t mean it will happen again.”

Confidence restored? Is that the critical measurement, confidence? I suppose it is….if you are a shepherd.

The tag lines:

After all, this is the 21st century, not a more primitive past when little in life was assured. Surely people know how to fix problems now.

Maybe. And maybe this is what the 21st century will be about – a great unraveling of some things long taken for granted.

Oh Ho! A “great unraveling” indeed.

Federal Report: Warming = More Harmful Climate Extremes

Hurricane Forecast 2008 – Atlantic Warm Pool Growing

Dr. James Hansen: “A Guaranteed Disaster” Planned CO2 Cuts Too Little, Too Late

Americans Don’t Care about Global Warming

Ocean temps, levels rise 50% higher than expected

As Americans suffer at the pump, energy industry basks in luxury.

Put oil firm chiefs on trial, says leading climate change scientist

No Virginia, there is no Sanity Clause.

The comforting reassurances by the historian in the AP piece of crises overcome in the past in effect ask us to ignore the future…and of course, if you are a good sheep, that is by far the wisest course. The Authorities know what they are doig, the Shepherds will take care of us. Just keep grazing… and um, releasing methane. The Shepherds don’t want to…can’t afford to…disturb or alarm the sheep. If the sheep ever looked up from their grazing, they might notice that not only is something going drastically wrong, but that the Shepherds not only don’t have a clue what to do about it…but that they are actually actively making it worse, while profiting from it….and “making plans” for them and their fellow shepherds…but not so much for the sheep.

Unraveling indeed.

Though the Shepherds tell us differently…that Iraq is a war for freedom, not oil…the sheep do not yet know that the Shepherds are in a great global struggle for energy hegemony…for control of the planets dwindling resources.

But as the price of gas rises to the point where they can no longer merely graze peacefully, a percentage of the sheep might look up.

And when they do, they will have some hard decisions to face. The first being whether to support killing their fellow sheep in Iraq and elsewhere so that the Shepherds can profit from controlling the oil. How many lives are they willing to have their government take in their name to preserve “The American Lifestyle.”

And since oil use and emissions are still going up….what happens when killing people for their oil doesn’t work anymore?

Humans, let alone Americans, have never faced a “great unraveling” of the magnitude we are facing. Other than the context of “world wars,”  humans are not used to thinking globally. Climate Crisis will “unravel” that. This is NOT an American problem or a Chinese problem or a Indian problem. This is a planetary problem…unlike any the human race has faced before.

We as Americans and as humans have a decision to make. Do we fight and kill each other for the remaining resources as all the while the Climate Crisis is ignored and exacerbated due to resource wars?

Or do we find a new way?

Will this be the crisis that makes humans change from a group of tribalized nation states scratching and clawing in competition for their individual survival at ALL costs?

Or will we finally be FORCED to learn to cooperate and work together?

We know what the status quo says, we know what the corporations say, we know what the Republicans say, we know what the Military Industrial Complex says.

As we sheep look up and see what the Shepherds have done…and are preparing to do….WE will have two choices as to what to say…

Baa

or

No

.

And “they” will not take ‘no’ lightly.

Humans only change through crisis. Get ready for change.

.

Update: for emphasis I will post this link again: Federal Report: Warming = More Harmful Climate Extremes

The Shepherds would have us believe this is some far off future that we are facing. It is not. Climate Crisis is here, now.

Since, tragically, the majority of the flock has not yet learned to think for itself.

Next step….life in the post Bush world and facing reality without the Oiligarchy’s Boyz in power ad spinning madly.

  2. than of the world at large?

They have no freedom of choice or will.

If people are treated like sheep, my suspicion is that lots of people like it that way.  Well, until they don’t.

I prefer to remind or persuade folks of their fundamental humaness, their need to take responsibility for what they do, in short that they are citizens, not sheep.  I don’t like waiting for crisis.  It can have very negative effects (for instance, here we got FDR.  In Germany, they got Hitler.  Not willing to take that chance.)

  3. I get the feeling that all or almost all of the regulars here are of the same generation.

We should take a poll sometime, just for the hell of it.

  4. up and grouchy like this I sort of have an urge to pet his head and feed him animal crackers.

But I like it too… its kinda hot when the benevolent wise zen master I look up to gets feisty.

  5. also clearly talks about how the established order the way we see and understand things is being challenged. Now obviously AP isn’t going to take this kid of slant on the story but it is also a window of opportunity to challenge the idea that we should even try to hold on to all of this stuff. Much of what is spinning out of control is the complete and utter cultural BS that makes up this American life.

The problem is that a whole bunch of people are suffering from both real and imagined economic anxiety.

  6. Or will we finally be FORCED to learn to cooperate and work together?

Yes buhdy, this is the ONLY alternative.  We must work together, or…

  7. but wolves, no I like wolves, they are the proverbial foxes guarding the hen house, no wait I like foxes. I contend that the sheep know, they just don’t want to know, they prefer to spew chemicals, believe were the good guys, that this is a democracy, and as Jay Elias put it, “no one knows who actually fired the fatal shot.  And then it is no one’s fault that there is a corpse on the floor.  We all just get off scot free.”

Or another guy no less articulate:

Those who profess to favor freedom and yet depreciate agitation, are people who want crops without ploughing the ground; they want rain without thunder and lightning; they want the ocean without the roar of its many waters. The struggle may be a moral one, or it may be a physical one, or it may be both. But it must be a struggle. Power concedes nothing without a demand; it never has and it never will.

No matter how you cut it the responsibility lies with the people (Sheep?). The excuses I hear from both the pols, their megaphone the media, and the people are lame. We choose to go for political fictions while reality rages on. Cause and effect looms larger then our petty politics or life styles. Meanwhile it’s getting impossible to graze one must look up if your living in a barren hostile environment that rains on your head the uncontrollable karma you have planted for a Dream Americana that offer nothing of it’s intent, not even the elusive ‘pursuit of happiness’.

  8. Just to add my 2 cents: oops, I like foxes too, let’s call them dementors, shall we?  Via Paul Krugman’s blog, I found this:

IN the autumn of 68 B.C. the world’s only military superpower was dealt a profound psychological blow by a daring terrorist attack on its very heart. Rome’s port at Ostia was set on fire, the consular war fleet destroyed, and two prominent senators, together with their bodyguards and staff, kidnapped….

Like Al Qaeda, these pirates were loosely organized, but able to spread a disproportionate amount of fear among citizens who had believed themselves immune from attack….

Over the preceding centuries, the Constitution of ancient Rome had developed an intricate series of checks and balances intended to prevent the concentration of power in the hands of a single individual….

[I]t was too late to raise such questions. By the oldest trick in the political book – the whipping up of a panic, in which any dissenting voice could be dismissed as “soft” or even “traitorous” – powers had been ceded by the people that would never be returned.

Please, read the whole thing…fair use considerations do not do it justice…but it pretty well summarizes where we are as a republic right now.

  9. atop the Apocalyptic horse.

And sheeple is a most familiar term.  When I started my journey even before the mighty search engine of Google terms like “New World Order” were confined to only a few of the most hard core of conspiracy theorists.  That hit count now stands at 69 million.

The shepherds are scumbags that I should take up my Braveheart sword and smite those most evil.  In the end though it does come down to the levels.  Try as one might the vast majority are going to remain sheeple.  This explains the phenomena.

    http://www.proliberty.com/obse

Since the dawn of civilization villages, cities and nations both great and small have come and gone.  Elite scumbags having risen to the top of these having always been able to control their sheeple either at the point of a sword or by the use of religion.  Then came the great experiment of the United States with it’s promise of liberty and equality for all men.

Well, the capitalists have found the profits margins better based upon the ancient world with their sheeple easily controlled at the point of a gun. There is no OSHA, there are no labor unions and certainly it will make the Love Canal look like a minor chemical spill.  How profane is it for them to host the Olympics while the entire western world finances their industrial gold rush.

What they are after is the ultimate prize.  The hot shower you may take every day, the cars driven to the supermarkets and soccer fields and the gigawatts wasted on mindless infotainment.  They need us not anymore our measly 300 million energy sucking brats who think they are “free”, for there are trillions to be made with the remaining 6.5 billion that history, since the dawn of time says have caused little trouble.

If you were CEO of the world what would be your choice?
