Klavan, via WaPo: “George W. Bush is like Batman.”

Cross-posted at DailyKos.

I swear I’m not making that up, and I urge you to go and see if you don’t believe me:

There seems to me no question that the Batman film “The Dark Knight,” currently breaking every box office record in history, is at some level a paean of praise to the fortitude and moral courage that has been shown by George W. Bush in this time of terror and war.

I cannot tell you how sad this op-ed makes me.

Andrew Klavan takes a relatively common past-time–looking deep into movies, searching for deeper meanings–and then, instead of making sound, logical conclusions, swerves the car and crashes head-first into the Tree of Stupidity.

With gems such as this:

Leftists frequently complain that right-wing morality is simplistic. Morality is relative, they say; nuanced, complex. They’re wrong, of course, even on their own terms.

Klavan takes us on a remarkable journey into the mind of a dumbass, of a person who believes so strongly in his own opinions that he sees them positively mirrored and etched onto everyday life. The fact that a superhero dressed up like a bat is fighting a scarred man who paints his face like a clown is vindication that GWB is fighting the good fight, and crazed loony leftist atheist freaks are wrong.

Literally. That’s what he believes.

One of his main points is that sometimes, heroes must kill to serve good, must commit morally questionable acts to do what is just and right. Or, in Bush’s case, commit morally questionable acts to wage a morally questionable war in which he orders OTHER people to kill for a morally questionable goal.

Six of one, really.

Klavan closes with a bit of self-serving crap:

That’s real moral complexity. And when our artistic community is ready to show that sometimes men must kill in order to preserve life; that sometimes they must violate their values in order to maintain those values; and that while movie stars may strut in the bright light of our adulation for pretending to be heroes, true heroes often must slink in the shadows, slump-shouldered and despised — then and only then will we be able to pay President Bush his due and make good and true films about the war on terror.

Perhaps that’s when Hollywood conservatives will be able to take off their masks and speak plainly in the light of day.

I eagerly look forward to the day when George W. Bush gets his due via film.

I can only pray that the final scene is him walking away, shoulders slumped, head hung low, as he is led to a federal jail as he awaits trial for his war crimes.

    Jesus.

Batman has become inherently less cool just because of that article.

We know Bush is batty, but I never knew that Klavan is a stupid as Bush thinks he is, and now I have some concerns too about the WAPO editors who allowed Klavan’s mindless drivel to be published. Obviously they think that their subscribers and readers are stupid as Bush thinks those editors are too.

Jesus, Klavan. Get a grip. And another line of work.

  1. I can only pray that the final scene is him walking away, shoulders slumped, head hung low, as he is led to a federal jail as he awaits trial for his war crimes.

Better: him walking  away, shoulders slumped, head hung low, into a life of obscurity, isolation, and Hughesian mental illness. A life where no one cares about him.
