Salicornia

Salicornia, believe it or not, is a plant that can grow in inhospitable, desert soils and can be watered with, of all things, ocean salt water.  Never heard of this?  Neither have I.  I’ve sat on the beach and wondered what it would take to remove the salt from sea water to grow things in sand, but I never thought about reversing the process,  leaving the salt in the water and finding something that would grow in it.  In today’s LA Times I found an “ah hah” moment.

Quick Update on Rove, Pelosi and Contempt…

The House Subcommittee on Commercial and Adminstrative Law of the Judiciary Committee, where Karl Rove was a no show at his subpoened appearance ruled against Rove in a 7 to 1 vote.  All 7 democratic members voted to proceed with actions denying his claim of immunity.  One of the 5 republicans voted “no”; this was the ranking member, Mr. Cannon.

Four at Four

  1. I don’t have to write that the G8 ‘leaders’ are out of touch, they shout it themselves from behind their gilded security bubble.

G8 leaders give middle finger to the world… again

The NY Times reports G8 global warming talks leave few concrete goals. “The statement issued by the industrialized Group of 8 pledged to ‘move toward a carbon-free society’ by seeking to cut worldwide emissions of heat-trapping gases in half by 2050. But the statement did not say whether that baseline would be emissions at 1990 levels, or the less ambitious baseline of current levels, already 25 percent higher.”

Even with this fuzzy goal, the G8 ‘leaders’ say the world has 40 years. While many scientists, such as NASA climate scientist, James Hansen, say we have only one year left to act.

While the LA Times reports the G8 summit largely ignores economic woes. “President Bush and leaders of seven of the other wealthiest nations face a triple whammy of economic woes: a global credit crunch, soaring food prices and spiraling oil costs. But in three days… there was little in the way of fresh initiatives on how to get the world’s economy back on track.” As usual, they wined and dined, while saying ‘Let them eat cake’ to most everyone else.

  2. U.S. Troops in Iraq Face A Powerful New Weapon

The Washington Post reports that suspected Shiite fighters in Iraq opposed to the U.S. occupation are now “using powerful rocket-propelled bombs to attack U.S. military outposts in recent months, broadening the array of weapons used against American troops.”

U.S. military officials call the devices Improvised Rocket Assisted Munitions, or IRAMs. They are propane tanks packed with hundreds of pounds of explosives and powered by 107mm rockets. They are often fired by remote control from the backs of trucks, sometimes in close succession. Rocket-propelled bombs have killed at least 21 people, including at least three U.S. soldiers, this year…

U.S. military officials say IRAM attacks, unlike roadside bombings and conventional mortar or rocket attacks, have the potential to kill scores of soldiers at once. IRAMs are fired at close range, unlike most rockets, and create much larger explosions. Most such attacks have occurred in the capital, Baghdad.

The use of the rocket-propelled bombs reflects militiamen’s ability to use commonly available materials and relatively low-tech weaponry to circumvent security measures that have cost the U.S. military billions of dollars.

The longer this occupation goes, the more bankrupt the United States will become. For all our technology, the U.S. military is still being defeated by low tech attacks. A July 2008 report, “Actions Needed to Reduce Carryover at Army Depots” (pdf) from the GAO found that the U.S. military cannot repair equipment fast enough in Iraq and Afghanistan to meet the demands of battle. Each day we remain in Iraq and Afghanistan is a day we continue to dig our nation’s grave deeper.

Four at Four continues with America’s failures in Pakistan and a scientist that is harnessing rising oceans to grow a desert crop.

Bush to the World: So long suckers!

If there was any doubt that George W. Bush was an asshole who couldn’t give a shit about the world, here’s further proof. From The Telegraph, At the G8 Summit, Bush: ‘Goodbye from the world’s biggest polluter’

The American leader, who has been condemned throughout his presidency for failing to tackle climate change, ended a private meeting with the words: “Goodbye from the world’s biggest polluter.

He then punched the air while grinning widely, as the rest of those present including Gordon Brown and Nicolas Sarkozy looked on in shock.

McCain has no comment, and neither do I

AP reports that John McCain

…resisted being dragged into a discussion Wednesday about insurance companies that cover Viagra but not birth control products.

“I certainly do not want to discuss that issue,” the presidential candidate said when a reporter asked him about it on his campaign bus, the “Straight Talk Express.”

Learning from his example, I have no comment on the location of McCain’s town meeting in Hudson, Wisconsin on Friday to discuss women’s issues.  The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports:

The meeting will be held at J&L Steel Erectors, a woman-owned business.

Wonder what will come up.

The Resistance Party…and Power.

A cautionary tale?

The Resistance Party, any third party, is an attempt to take power from the powerful. To replace the current ‘interpretation’ of the world with our own interpretation.

All things are subject to interpretation whichever interpretation prevails at a given time is a function of power and not truth.

Friedrich Nietzsche

The world itself is the will to power – and nothing else! And you yourself are the will to power – and nothing else!

Friedrich Nietzsche

Each human being contains “the life force.” The life force exists at its root to propagate itself, life itself, in order to survive. The will to survive, is the will to power. But not all wills are created equal. For the vast majority of humans (at our current state of evolution) the will to power is satisfied when it achieves one thing: comfort. When we have yet to achieve comfort, or when comfort is taken from us, we seek power. When we have achieved comfort, we stop. This is human nature.

The vast majority of humans will only seek to use the power of resistance when they have been made ….uncomfortable…. enough.

Kucinich bringing Impeachment Article in House (updated)

UPDATE:  Link to the Article text on AfterDowningStreet.

Dennis Kucinich plans to read a single article of Impeachment on the House floor today around 4 PM Eastern.   The Article of Impeachment is titled:  Deceiving Congress with Fabricated Threats of Iraq WMDs to Fraudulently Obtain Support for an Authorization of the Use of Military Force Against Iraq.

The text of the article will be released at a Press Conference at 2 PM (see above).

Pelosi Supporting Impeachment Hearings?

“Pelosi says House Judiciary may hold hearings on Kucinich impeachment resolution”

That’s the headline of an item today on Politico.com, which says:

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said this morning that the House Judiciary Committee may hold hearings on an impeachment resolution offered by Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio).

Kucinich is expected to offer a “privileged resolution” this afternoon calling on the House to look at whether President Bush should be removed from office for lying to Congress and the American public when he sought congressional approval back in 2002 for taking military action to invade Iraq and overthrow Saddam Hussein.

Maybe this is just a bone from the Dem leadership to make up for the Senate’s rape of the Constitution yesterday.

The Great Betrayal

For 40 years I have been told be patient, work within the system, elect more Democrats.  In all that time I have seen few victories and most of those merely symbolic (ooh, they increased the minimum rage by 15 cents an hour), and these anemic victories have been overwhelmed by the horrendous losses the American people have suffered time and time again.  There has been a steady erosion of our Constitutional rights, economic inequality has increased, the working poor and the middleclass have been robbed at every turn by the filthy rich and our government has become more corrupt, more warlike and more evil.  We now openly torture our prisoners and publicly argue that it is our right to do so.

Bad Pragmatism pt. 2: Benjamin Ginsberg’s The American Lie

Book Review: Ginsberg, Benjamin.  The American Lie: Government by the People and Other Political Fables.  Boulder, CO: Paradigm Publishers, 2007.

This, part two in a series, will analyze Benjamin Ginsberg’s book The American Lie as a “cynical realist” take on the American political process, suggesting that even though it’s marginally useful to be “cynical,” we still must be against “bad pragmatism” and in favor of politics for the greater good even when confronted with the corrupt system we have today.

Next: either a history of bad pragmatism, or a diary on the latest bad pragmatist outrage.  There WILL be a Bad Pragmatism pt. 3.

Integrity

What is integrity?  It is a word that has been bandied about a lot recently during our National process of choosing leaders to be elected to the highest Political Offices of our Country.  Who has integrity?  Who does not have integrity?  Is integrity in our Politicians a good trait?  A bad trait?  An impossible trait?  Who is to say whether any certain Candidate or any person, for that matter, has integrity or not?  Can a person have integrity on one issue and not have integrity on another issue and still have Integrity?

So many questions.  Not such easy answers.

Let’s have a look at the word Integrity.

In discussions on behavior and morality, one view of the property of integrity sees it as the virtue of basing actions on an internally-consistent framework of principles.

This scenario may emphasize depth of principles and adherence of each level to the next. One can describe a person as having integrity to the extent that everything that that person does derives from the same core set of values. While those values may change, their consistency with each other and with the person’s actions determine the person’s degree of integrity.

Considering this description of Integrity, an Internally-consistant framework of principles would have to be viewed as a trait belonging to an individual.  Therefore, MY degree of integrity to MYSELF may be close too 100% if I stick to my internal principles at all times.  However, someone other than myself might see me as not having integrity because they do not understand my internal set of principles and therefore only have the ability to judge me by my words and actions.

AFGE Says McCain Wrong on Veterans Health Care

Union Representing VA Workers Launch Nationwide Radio Campaign, Web Site and Viral Videos for Full VA Funding

This week, the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) launched a nationwide radio ad campaign raising serious concerns about Senator McCain’s commitment to veterans’ health care. In addition to the radio ads, AFGE, which represents employees in the Department of Veterans Affairs, launched a Web site, Fund The VA, and a series of YouTube ads featuring union veterans voicing their concerns about McCain’s controversial veterans health care platform.
