Caroline Kennedy has written two books about aspects of the U.S. Constitution. Ms. Kennedy has studied the Constitution. wOw. Studied the founding document of our country… has a law degree and been an advocate for public (PUBLIC) education and the arts and has served the public to champion these causes.
She believes in political courage.
These are serious times. Ms. Kennedy is a serious person. Not an ideologue. I think she feels called to the service of her country. Not to attain power. But to serve. Now, what more do you people (at dKos) want?
Caroline Kennedy had me at In Our Defense: The Bill of Rights In Action and
The Right to Privacy, two books she co-authored with Ellen Alderman. These books are about civil liberties and the stresses of modern life on our liberty and privacy. Is it surprising that an American so concerned about civil liberty would decide it might be time to bring that passion to Washington?
Not qualified? As opposed to whom? Nancy Pelosi? Who said of protesters “squatting” in front of her home …if they were poor, and they were sleeping on my sidewalk, they’d be arrested for loitering, but because they have ‘impeach Bush’ across their chest, it’s the First Amendment. A better Democrat? Really? Take-impeachment-off-the-table-and-capitulate (every time)-to-Republicans-Pelosi? A better Democrat? Is that what we mean?
Perhaps we mean New York’s own Chuck Schumer is a model “better” democrat. You remember him, the better democrat who endorsed Michael B. Mukasey for AG? The same Senator Schumer who … traded telephone calls with bankers, then became one of the first officials to promote a Wall Street bailout and as . . .
a member of the Banking and Finance Committees, repeatedly took other steps to protect industry players from government oversight and tougher rules, a review of his record shows. Over the years, he has also helped save financial institutions billions of dollars in higher taxes or fees.
He succeeded in limiting efforts to regulate credit-rating agencies, for example, sponsored legislation that cut fees paid by Wall Street firms to finance government oversight, pushed to allow banks to have lower capital reserves and called for the revision of regulations to make corporations’ balance sheets more transparent.
Or maybe we mean someone more qualified, like Alan Greenspan. Heck, Dick Cheney has been in politics for decades. Bush 41 was the head of the CIA… certainly that qualified him to become president (although I would have a rule that a CIA head could NEVER EVER become president). Yeah. What we need is more and better masters of the universe. Now those are the kinds of people who can solve our problems.
From what I’ve read and gleaned about Caroline Kennedy over decades, she is studied, quiet, careful, and certainly not glitzy or an attention-seeker. And this is something I really admire… she truly seems to believe in political courage… acts that benefit society despite the interests of the powerful and narrow few.
President Kennedy believed that one man of courage makes a majority. Viktor Yushchenko embodies that belief for a new generation. In the face of corruption, intimidation and life threatening danger, he remained true to the ideals of freedom, democracy and the rule of law.
I’m just guessing now, but perhaps after these eight horrible lawless years overwhelmed by corruption, someone of Caroline Kennedy’s ilk, with a commitment to the law and ideals expressed in our Constitution, might just be one of the those BETTER DEMOCRATS for whom we’ve been looking.
She has a strong sense of personal responsibility,” says historian David McCullough, who sits with Caroline on the panel that hands out the Kennedy Library’s annual Profile in Courage Awards. “She knows she has serious work to do.”

USS John F. Kennedy (CVA-67) was laid down on 22 October 1964 at Newport News, Virginia, by the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company; launched on 27 May 1967; sponsored by Miss Caroline Kennedy, daughter of the late President John Fitzgerald Kennedy; and commissioned at Newport News on 7 September 1968, Captain Earl P. Yates in command.

as i remember them . . .
Princess Diana vibe from this whole situation.
Diana was beloved by the citizens of the world, and I get the extreme feeling that nothing she could have done, sans baby slaughter, would have changed most peoples minds about her. In the end, she was a caring and thoughtful person who had (shudder) personal failings like all other humans.
I’m getting that vibe again with Caroline Kennedy. The Princess that can do no wrong. However, this is politics and Caroline WILL be taking flack from all sides once she places herself directly in the line of fire.
Don’t think people are ready for that, perhaps including Caroline. I would not like to see her appointed Senator and then get really disillusioned with the reality that will come with the job description. Then again, there is no doubt she is a strong woman and can no doubt deal with it.
as I said to the FP rant about Caroline:
No one gets this?
all things being equal, I am discomfitted by dynasties.
Perhaps she is the ‘best’ choice to be made, but I do not see how she “deserves” this because she’s a Kennedy.
And, while she might be (or is …) a better Democrat, there are how many thousands of better Democrats in New York?
She might be the best choice to be made, but that doesn’t end ill-ease with dynasties.
for the senate seat. She’s a Kennedy and a real Democrat. she’s also part of the best dynasty we have in our politics. Way better then the Bushes. I think it’s an asset that she is part of the Kennedy clan. Since we seem as a country to love dynasties we might as well have the good ones in. I wish Bobby Jr. had a job in Obama’s administration. As p8 says whose going to mess with a Kennedy from our side. Better than Nancy who is also from a political dynasty.
I think she will listen to her constituents. She’ll have my vote in 2010.
Massachusetts has their Lion. Give us our Lioness!
who killed the Kennedy’s?
When after all, it was you and me…”
-Sympathy for the Devil
Seems Caroline is far better than about 80% of the bozos who currently take up space in that august body known as the US Senate. Plus the Kennedy name alone scares the 27% no end. Besides, NY set the precedent when they elected Hillary.
She is a bit shyer than the rest of her family, but that doesn’t stop her from standing her ground and speaking her views.
The Kennedys truly are a family of service. Not just politically either. They quietly do their duty helping to feed and clothe the poor, etc.
I do have a bias though. According to my late great aunt I’m very distantly related to Caroline from her mothers side.
Written as an intro, so as a hardcore Privacy geek I didn’t learn much, but for what it tried to do it was pretty good.
Privacy was a hotbutton issue for few Dems in the ’90s. There was a mythology that Govt. powers would only be used to spy on the Michigan Militia. Meanwhile, the architecture for the NSA spying got built with the blessing lof most liberals, if they were paying attention at all.
The book also covers corporate data collection, in greater depth than the Govt. stuff.
I probably ought to do a full length review, but I’d have to track down another copy. Gave mine away, and read it looong ago.
To the extent the unique resume factors in, I sense it’ll leave her placed to fight Obama on policy when needed, without the fear she’ll be seen an opponent of the Administration. In particular, I imagine her as a key ally of Feingold on FISA related legislation.
