Dharmathon for Edger

Hey folks, it sounds like Edger is…a bit on the Edge.

Like, seriously.

Please pop over to OOIBC and hit the Paypal button and give what you can to help him keep food in the belly and a roof overhead. Every little bit helps, and helping is what we are about. Especially helping someone who works so hard at helping others.

Thanks.

Wow. What a nice thing to do. 🙂

I know that OTB is at work today, so I am going to start building the framework of a site for us at wordpress today, so that we at least have some continuity with at the most a short break in service if at all, and try to make it look as nearly identical to this  site as I can. I’ve already downloaded Zwoof’s banner so I can put that up over there, and the petition badge is on photobucket so we won’t lose that.

OTB can later, when soapblox goes down, redirect http://www.docudharma.com so that it opens the new site, and the change will be transparent and seamless to users.

Everyone will of course have to create their user account again over there, and it will be a blank slate until and if OTB can copy as many of the diaries as possible, so we’ll need some good essays written RIGHT AWAY!!  ðŸ™‚ Even so, any internal links to other Docudharma diaries will be broken, but external links in diaries she can copy will work.

I have the RSS feed for the DD tag petition for a special prosecutor open here and I will copy the html out of it and try to get those at least posted once I get a new site built there.

It won’t look as good immediately as this site does, but slowly we’ll pull all the pieces together and like a phoenix we case rise even better that we were!

I like your sugestion of using Drupal, Buhdy. it would give us a site equivalent to something on the level of Democrats.com, but it needs installation and development on a web host like godaddy.

We can do that but it takes time whereas the wordpress solution should have us running, or at least limping along, by tomorrow, and if there is the capability on you godday account maybe we can start building a drupal site there, after we get a wordpress sit up to use. The domain name redirect can be changed as many time as needed.

What a great community of people here at DD! Thank you all for you support.

it’s been awhile since I worked with wordpress, so I’m going to bury my head in it now. I’ll surface once in awhile to let you know how it’s going.

Probably too little for everything Edger does/has done for the entire blogging community.

I don’t understand all the technical difficulties, but I can understand an appeal for help.

    Take care, Edger.

    And thanks, Budhy.

What a great place this is, and what a great group of people!

I’m a little nervous. Now, that Soapblox was hacked once, I expect the hackers will try again… and I am not going to let DD disappear.

OTB and I are starting to discuss now maybe setting up the same kind of system that Buhdy suggested, the same system that Democrats.com runs on. It’s an open source system used all over the world called Drupal:

Drupal is a free software package that allows an individual or a community of users to easily publish, manage and organize a wide variety of content on a website. Tens of thousands of people and organizations are using Drupal to power scores of different web sites, including

    • Community web portals
    • Discussion sites
    • Corporate web sites
    • Intranet applications
    • Personal web sites or blogs
    • Aficionado sites
    • E-commerce applications
    • Resource directories
    • Social Networking sites
    • Content Management Systems
    • Blogs
    • Collaborative authoring environments
    • Forums
    • Peer-to-peer networking
    • Newsletters
    • Podcasting
    • Picture galleries
    • File uploads and downloads

    and much more.

Drupal is open-source software distributed under the GPL (“GNU General Public License”) and is maintained and developed by a community of thousands of users and developers.

It wouldn’t be an overnight setup, and I think we can continue with Soapblox as long as it continues to run stably, but it would be nice I think to set up a complete backup site so it’s there waiting in the wings for us to move to if Soapblox does go down on us, and it would be a  system that we could switch to, once it is installed and set up properly, by just redirecting http://www.docudharma.com to it whenever we needed to.

    Thoughts?

    Where we stand

We are stabilizing everything as best we can right now, and getting ourselves backups to help keep everything safe and restoreable in the short-term

A long term fix is also on the way.

It also seems like SoapBlox needs to be transformed from a proprietary model to one of open source to help get rid of me alone as the single-point of contact with so much stuff.

On a purely personal note, I have been running SoapBlox as a part-time gig for almost 4 years now.  Because I believe so much in the cause and the medium, I’ve tried to keep the prices as low as possible, and perhaps this hasn’t been the right approach.  Recently I have been struggling to do my given the time constraints from other duties (especially my real full time job).

There are so many things I’d like to do with SoapBlox, to provide you with the best darn platform there can be.  I have poured my heart and soul–my blood, sweat, and tears in to SoapBlox.  But this would require making SoapBlox a full-time gig for me, so I could deal with all elements of the business with my fullest attention.   Any ideas on how to make this happen, and I’m all ears.

Again, I am awed by today’s reaction–so many people would be willing to donate time, money, and effort to see the continuation of

SoapBlox.  We have gotten an amazing outpouring of support.

    Onwards!

    • Edger on January 9, 2009 at 02:12

in case Soapblox disappears again, is under construction and making some good progress! It’s a long, long ways yet from ready to use – still a lot to do – but you can take a look at where it’s at so far, here:  http://dharmadocs.com/drupal/

  7. I wish I could send you money.  But I need dental work done (just took the last of my penicillin for the Christmas tooth flare-up, which visit-to-dentist used up most of my January rent…so I’m behind on that–and still need the damn dental work!; hours are cut b/c winter is the slow season…I may be asking for financial help myself, Real Soon Now.  sigh

    Sorry.
