I’m considering fostering a Shih Tzu which was abandoned by its family when they learned it had a malignant tumor. It is an amazingly sweet dog, and the rescue organization decided that it was too sweet a dog just to put down, and is asking me if I would be willing to give it a good home where it would be loved and happy for its last days, at their expense. The vet says that the dog could survive for anywhere from a couple weeks to two months.
My question is to the more experienced pet owners here: is this a good or a terrible idea. I’ve managed to avoid even being present at the time of death of all of my previous pets (not intentionally). And I have personal reasons (the recent loss of a friend) which are part of why I’m interested in doing this. Am I totally insane?
