Rep. Steve Austria (R-OH) attempted to join in the Republibans latest fetish, smearing, libeling and demeaning one of America’s greatest Presidents and political icons, Franklin Delano Roosevelt. The man who saved America from the First Republican Great Depression. In order to justify their current obstructionism…and bring on the Second Republican Great Depression.

“When (President Franklin) Roosevelt did this, he put our country into a Great Depression,” Austria said. “He tried to borrow and spend, he tried to use the Keynesian approach, and our country ended up in a Great Depression. That’s just history.”

.

The Columbus Dispatch then notes, “Most historians date the beginning of the Great Depression at or shortly after the stock-market crash of 1929; Roosevelt took office in 1933.” As Dean Baker has explained, “Roosevelt’s New Deal Agenda lowered the unemployment rate from 25 percent in 1933 to 10 percent in 1937.” The economy turned bad again when the “Blue Dogs of the Roosevelt era won sway and got Roosevelt to cut spending and raise taxes.”

  2. With a name like that, I suspect he’s not a real person at all.  What happened here is Ohio Republicans elected a fictional character in the Left Behind series of whacko Christianist novels to represent them in Congress.

Rayford Steele . . . Bruce Barnes . . . Nick Carpathia . . . are fictional Left Behind characters, and so is Steve Austria, IMO.

I could be wrong, but the evidence looks pretty conclusive to me.

  3. to learn history…can we now beat them over the heads with the history books?  Maybe they’ll learn through painful osmosis…

should ask photobucket to delete the FDR administration from history.

  4. the way Lincoln, a Republican (the only good one I know of) was a racist who was out to get the south, for whatever reasons they pull out their ass. Revisionist history  abounds, Viet Nam a noble cause we could have won, was subverted by Dirty Hippies and cowardly pols. FDR is being so jerked around that when you google him you get a huge list of this crap. RFK would have been a winger once elected, and LBJ was the one who implemented all the civil rights. A good Democrat even though he killed a lot o babies. Carter, now he is another misaligned humanist. The Native Americans they were the enemy in the way of manifest destiny.

I was looking for a little published speech made by FDR about his worries that once the crisis economically was over we would always go through this as long as people veiwed income desparity as the natural order. I could not find it, all I read was how he worsened the depression or even caused it. Almost all the regulations and programs that help people are now called ‘entitlements’ and he was a traitor.

I spent my childhood in the 50’s and 60’s listening to this argument. My mom was a FDR liberal, she loved Elinore, my dad he hated FDR. He contended that FDR sold our country out to the Commies. Hell he was a commie. My mom loved Kenendy and when my dad voted for Nixon that set them off on the old FDR is to blame flame war that went on for months. This argument defined my early years and needless to say my mom won, a lefty, humanist was born from the peanut gallery.

Kids know  bs when they hear it. The grandchildren from my right wing son hate the Bushies they know a bad guy when they see one. Why are we so bombarded with ‘two legs better’ at this late date when the shit has hit the fan and were all mired in it.
