Senator Specter says CIA has a “bad record” on “Honesty.”

Understatement, perhaps.  ðŸ™‚

This is surprising, but I’m glad he said this.  Nancy Pelosi has her faults, but the attacks on her for telling the truth about the CIA, i.e., that they lie, are wrong.  It’s misdirection by Republicans to avoid justice for Bush and Cheney (and many others) for violating international law. Pelosi did not shine on this (an understatement) but she is not Bush or Cheney.  She may not have stopped it (and she may not have been able to do so), but she did not create the criminal policies.

Arlan Specter coming to the rescue.  Well, it’s a start.  Now he needs to support EFCA.

Sen. Arlen Specter (D-Pa.) took the opportunity Wednesday to defend House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), who has come under fire in recent weeks over a controversy surrounding when she was told of the use of enhanced interrogation techniques being used by the CIA.

“The CIA has a very bad record when it comes to – I was about to say ‘candid’; that’s too mild – to honesty,” Specter, a former chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said in a lunch address to the American Law Institute. He cited misleading information about the agency’s involvement in mining harbors in Nicaragua and the Iran-Contra affair.

“Director [Leon] Panetta says the agency does not make it a habit to misinform Congress. I believe that is true. It is not the policy of the Central Intelligence Agency to misinform Congress,” Specter said. “But that doesn’t mean that they’re all giving out the information.”

US Economy 2.0 – The People Who Lost their Country

Part I — The People Who Lost their Country

Part II — Is the Nation’s Fate Your Destiny?

Part III — Putting the Individual Ahead of the Nation

I maintain that it is entirely possible to destroy, beyond repair, the economy of a centuries-old nation in just eight years of criminal mismanagement. Certainly the nation was fragile at the end of the Twentieth Century, for it had never recovered from the mortal wound it was dealt forty years earlier by our terrible defeat in Vietnam.

It was an insidious defeat, because the United States was physically untouched by the deadly conflict. At the same time, the ugly events of that war broke the American people.

They never recovered. Never again could they control their government. Never again would they trust it. Their hope for the future — their sons — had been taken away and murdered by the US government. As a result, families and communities, Republicans and Democrats, lost their way and lost their country. To this day, they cannot find it again.

Muse in the Morning

Once upon a time long, long ago, this blog was started and needed some daily features so that it wouldn’t appear stale and all.  On Monday, September 10, 2007 this feature first appeared with the name it has now, Muse in the Morning, after appearing twice at the end of the previous work week with a concept but no name.

Through the magic of auto-publishing, it has appeared at least five days a week ever since then…at 6:00am eastern/3:00am pacific.

It has changed a bit over time.  The original “outside” is on the flip.  Please consider it an invitation to join in.

An Open Letter to TocqueDeville

This is going to be short as there is not much to say about it, but the Dog thinks it needs to be said. Integrity is something the Dog strives for, but does not always achieve as well as he would like. It is in this spirit that he would like to offer the text of an e-mail that was sent this afternoon.

Four at Four

  1. Pesticides indicted in bee deaths writes Julia Scott at Salon. “The National Honeybee Advisory Board, which represents the two biggest beekeeper associations in the U.S., recently asked the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to ban” imidacloprid, the world’s best-selling insecticide created by Bayer CropScience Inc. with annual sales of $8.6 billion.

“We believe imidacloprid kills bees — specifically, that it causes bee colonies to collapse,” says Clint Walker, co-chairman of the board.

“Beekeepers have singled out imidacloprid and its chemical cousin clothianidin, also produced by Bayer CropScience, as a cause of bee die-offs around the world for over a decade.”

  2. McClatchy reports America’s poor are its most generous givers. “The generosity of poor people isn’t so much rare as rarely noticed, however. In fact, America’s poor donate more, in percentage terms, than higher-income groups do, surveys of charitable giving show. What’s more, their generosity declines less in hard times than the generosity of richer givers does.”

“What makes poor people’s generosity even more impressive is that their giving generally isn’t tax-deductible, because they don’t earn enough to justify itemizing their charitable tax deductions. In effect, giving a dollar to charity costs poor people a dollar while it costs deduction itemizers 65 cents.”

Four at Four continues with the CIA on trial in Italy, Republicans to offer 400 amendments to Waxman’s cap-and-trade legislation, and an update from the Swat Valley.

Time to Rein in the Kos Bashing!

Yes we do have Rulez here!

Obviously with the much lower traffic there are few opportunities to trot them out, since we have made a concerted effort to keep them to a minimum. but we DO have them!

Over the last few days we have been in what I consider an exceptional time. Thus I have made an exception to one of our few, but perhaps the strongest rule we have. And it is time, in my judgment to start easing it back in to place.

This is not an Anti-Dkos site. This is not a Dkos bashing site.

People have needed to express themselves. But any site that exists merely to oppose another site is a failure. The Rule is not in place for Dkos’s benefit. It is in place for the benefit of Docudharma. We are a better blog when we concentrate on real issues, not another blog.

So it is time to rein it in….please.

No one will be …heh….banned for Kos-bashing over the next day or two, but I will start writing the dreaded Strongly Worded Letters to those who persist!

Thanks!

From the FAQ:

Docudharma is about discussing and debating ideas. All ideas. We are not about being respected by other media or electing …anyone. That gives us the opportunity to discuss politics and everything else, freely. Our nominal focus is on finding a way to create a better future, but that is mainly because we needed a nominal focus! Other than the usual parameters of relatively civilized behavior, there is nothing out of bounds. Vigorous debate is encouraged, not shunned, and if you cross the legendary ‘line,’ folks will call you on it. Vigorously.

Inflammatory discussion of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict is not allowed. What constitutes inflammatory is my subjective call. If you wish to publish on this issue please e-mail me for more details.

There are some other things that are not allowed here, but they are just the basics. Threatening or calling for or planning violence, spamming, fundraising or publishing pedophilia. These things will get you warned and if you persist… quickly banned. As will excessive and prolonged Assholery. Assholery is of course subjective, but basically consists of NOT debating ideas, but attacking or stalking other posters. Attacks on other posters WHILE discussing ideas is discouraged, but since it happens on every blog everywhere inevitably, we have to some extent surrendered to it here at Docudharma.

…..

Conspiracy theories are allowed, Dirty Fucking Hippies are welcomed with open arms, and Republicans who are not overly dogmatic are tolerated. To reiterate, this is NOT a site to elect Democrats. NEITHER IS IT A DAILY KOS BASHING SITE. There are plenty of other places to do that.

All of the ‘rules’ are subject to …..MY subjectivity. All of these rules are changeable. And challengable! But….I am The Decider.  The Zen Dictator of Docudharma…meaning, I will have a hands off policy and position as much as is possible, but if it comes to me having to make a decision, I will do so as quickly as possible and take full responsibility for it. If the site is successful and we get too big for me to pay attention to every case, the rules will be changed. Which should lead to some interesting discussions!

It Need Not Be a Calamity

Betwixt and Between, I find myself. I observe the validity of D00m.P0rn shrill warnings about the future … when seen as possible outcomes rather than when seen as certainties. Yet I also see the potential for better outcomes.

And with respect to the strategy of sitting on the sidelines, weighing the likelihood of one versus the other … I’m against it. Simply the decision to sit on the sidelines makes the calamity more likely as a result. So I am for getting into the fray and trying to make the calamity less likely and the hopeful outcome more likely.

The Calamity Cavalcade

As far as potential calamities, we do not have to look far for those.

We are on track to have a higher concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere than at any other time in the Holocene. We are engaged in this experiments with absolutely no serious evidence to suggest that it is known to be safe. Indeed, those benefiting in the short term from the reckless experiment will even try to reverse the sane burden of proof and place it on those who do not approve of undertaking the reckless experiment.

The argument being, in essence, that if you are driving through a thick fog, then as long as you don’t see any cars coming, its OK to speed.

And of course, before the peril of climate chaos came to our attention, there was already the risk of ecosystem collapse hanging over our head, as more and more populations on the planet rely on an industrial technology that is quite clearly ecologically unsustainable and therefore certain to collapse sooner or later, unless we restructure our technological base to approach sustainability faster than we approach ecosystem collapse.

And then of course, even before the risk of ecosystem collapse was widely understood, the threat of nuclear holocaust.

Flood, Nuclear fire followed by Nuclear Winter, Famine and Plague … and all three involved in or certainly leading to War … surely rather than Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, there is a whole Cavalry Unit.

Against that backdrop, it may seem provincial to worry about a mere collapse of a single national economy from first world to banana republic status, but that is the specific calamity that I am focusing on here.

Seekers of Truth

Thunder on the mountain, and there’s fires on the moon,

A ruckus in the alley and the sun will be here soon.

Or maybe not.

There’s been a ruckus in the alley for 30 years, but too many Democrats still keep bringing bouquets of bipartisan flowers to gun fights.  They keep getting riddled with bullets, over and over again, but they still don’t seem to have a clue that their Bouquet of Bipartisan Flowers Strategy isn’t worth a flying fuck and never has been.

Thunder on the mountain, rollin’ like a drum,

Gonna fight for change here, it’s where the music’s coming from,

We don’t need any guide, we already know the way . . .

Seeking the truth is the way.  Seekers of truth are not conspiracy theorists, they are not purists, they don’t wear tinfoil fucking hats, they don’t need permission from Kos or anyone else to seek the truth about 9/11, about stolen elections, and about every other BushCo crime Cheney and his thugs keep high-fiving each other about while Eric Holder does nothing and Obama kisses the CIA’s ass and the Pentagon’s ass and the NSA’s ass and calls it change we can believe in.

Bibi’s FU To President Barack Obama

During the visit of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin (“Bibi”) Netanyahu with President Obama, the President pressed Bibi to agree to the two-state solution:

“It is in the interests not only of the Palestinians but also the Israelis, the United States and the international community to achieve a two-state solution,” Obama told reporters with Netanyahu sitting beside him.

Reuters

But Netanyahu would not agree even to that most basic principle.

“I did not say two states for two peoples,” Netanyahu said later at a solo briefing with reporters.

Reuters

Now, through an aide, Netanyahu called the “media” focus on a two state solution “childish and stupid.”  Of course, this media focus is there because the President of our nation is focused on a two-state solution.

More, after the fold.

Foreign relations from the egg: Nomads, Empires, States

This diary is a book review of Kees van der Pijl’s (2007) work on “foreign relations,” Nomads, Empires, States.  Van der Pijl argues that the field of “foreign relations” must be rethought, and doing this will allow us to see why relations between nation-states are only one mode of foreign relations, and not necessarily the most important one in this era.  Rethinking foreign relations, then, we should be able to understand why the regime of “global governance” has failed to triumph in a world without endemic warfare between nation-states.

The Democrat Party FINALLY Does Somethin’ Right

Glorious news from our nation’s capital (and/or Capitol) today!

Buried deep inside a boring bill about reformin’ credit card practices was a provision that stirred my patriotic loins in a way that’s been sorely missed since President Bush left office.  Senator Tom Coburn (R-OK), seein’ a major flaw in this credit card legislation, fixed it right up there by insertin’ an amendment to allow loaded guns in national parks.  Check and mate, you greedy credit card companies!

These days the Democrat party usually strips all of the patriotism right out of bills like this and replaces it with socialism.  But not this time!  Coburn’s amendment passed with the support of 27 Democrats in the Senate, includin’ the majority leader Harry Reid.  That makes TWO patriotic things Reid did in ONE day, along with his come-to-Jesus moment on not closin’ Guantanamo.  Wow!  Maybe there’s hope for this guy after all.  Or, maybe not, accordin’ to Nevada’s likely voters.
