NOLA – Oy

For those of you who have followed New Orleans political events on the many local blogs that have sprung up since Katrina, this story brings certain feelings:

NEW ORLEANS – New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin and his wife have been quarantined in China after a passenger on their flight exhibited flu-like symptoms.

From E at We Could Be Famous:

Totally surreal.

Did Mr. Nagin name an acting mayor before his journey? Would it be the role of City Council to appoint one in the event he did not? Is the Mayor going to be fit to lead if he now must face down this mutant cyborg super flu?

This is actually one of the most graceful Nagin resignation scenarios out there.

Drink fluids.

From Adrastos, short and sweet:

CAN WE MAKE THIS PERMANENT?

Or at least for another year: Nagin in quarantine because of swine flu scare.

Oyster from Your Right Hand Thief would be on this story in a flash, but he seems to have had an experience that continues to evolve for him, and hasn’t posted since May 28.

And nothing about Nagin, but what a great post from Mr. Clio at World Class New Orleans showing the micro and macro of the Obama era.  Referencing the fascinating New York Times Magazine article on Obama’s political strategies, Mr. Clio riffs:

Be-ers–that’s old New Orleans, old Detroit, millenial New York City. These are the people who show up to work with the number one goal of impressing others with how in tune and smart they are, showing how much they are into “moving forward,” and protecting their salary and company car and weekly meetings with those in the know.

Do-ers–that’s new New Orleans. These are people who show up to work trying to stir the pot and get things done, willing to say “no” or “I disagree” or “Waitjustaminute,” willing to be fired in the cause of trying to push the envelope.

Old New Orleans is still around, protecting turf and overpaying for “smart” people from out of town who help them protect the status quo in subtle ways. Are you listening, Ed Blakely and others of your ilk in key positions around the city? Carpetbaggers, your days are numbered.

Heh.  Enjoy your stay in China, Ray!

  1. … to give a shout-out to the NOLA blogs — a completely new internet news phenomenon, imo, born from the lack of accurate coverage, both local and national, in the city after Katrina.  Kinda ties in with the recent conversations about new media and such.

  2. From that old TeeVee show “The A-Team” that phrase,

“I love it when a plan comes together”.

Benjamin Fulford and his story about the Asian world being totally pissed about SARS being a genetically engineered race specific disease.  The Asian community is now taking charge and doing something about the western world’s embracing Unicorn flu as the be all and end all of global big pharma total control even if lamestream media ignored Baxter pharma’s intentional contamination of vaccines.

Note that I have been horse camping and as such have acquired new Apocalypse horse riding skills.

…after a passenger on their flight exhibited flu-like symptoms.

Wait a  minute. How do we know Nagin didn’t have a vial of that deadly influence… er, unicorn flu… taped to his leg? ยง;o)

  3. Thank you for so many reminders.  Strange episode with Mayor Nagin, indeed.

  4. …human inhumanity to our fellow human of almost anything.  I can never forget watching night after night, as our government did nothing, as the bodies, bloated, floated by, face down, dead man’s float.

This is what I mean by “killing through attrition;” except this seemed much more conscious, much more deliberate, much more malevolent than simple attrition.

We must change our country!  We can’t wait for Obama.  We must change it.

NOLA was / is criminally negligent homicide.  Except I believe it was quite deliberate.

    Thanks for this post NPK.

but I hope to God that doesn’t put the city in the hands of the city council, which is one of the most incompetent band of fools in town.  Have you been following the whole email-reveal folly of the last few months?  They’re fighting each other by selectively releasing embarrassing emails from political enemies, and it’s become tied up in court over privacy (and legality) concerns.  Total f’n mess.

People not-from-there wonder why New Orleans isn’t voting hardcore Democrat after Bush’s Katrina failure.  Truth is, they’ve become hardcore libertarian (except on levee related issues, natch), because the representatives of the Democratic party there are just terrible.

  5. I appreciate your keeping us abreast of all things NOLA. It’s easy with one freakin crisis after another to forget this beautiful and rich cities fate. I do believe somehow that this unique and cultural gem will like the phoenix raise from it’s ashes. Not the same but it’s history and it’s soul are too strong to be Disneyfied or killed off. It’s a tragic example of crisis capitalism and disregard for community. It also is an example to the rest of us, in the fact that it really is up to those who live in a community be it a city or a rural area that it’s our land , our community our heritage, not the carpetbagger Visigoths.
