Building the ‘Ultimate Torture Diary’

As hard as it may be to believe, in yesterdays diary at Dkos people were still saying stuff like this…

Investigate what exactly? (5+ / 0-)

To investigate something is to observe it and study it closely….and to gain knowledge.

Something?

What exactly do you propose they “investigate”?

Do you have incidents?  Dates?  Personnel involved?

If you don’t, that means you want a fishing expedition.  If that’s what you mean, just say so.

I answered back with…

Senate Report Details Torture Policy Origins

Can Holder Ignore the Red Cross Report?

and

What We The People Already Know About Torture

But that last one hasn’t been updated for a long time now. As we move in to the next phase with Ministry of Truths campaign…and hopefully the run up to Holder appointing an SP. And a new investigation of how a frikkin Vice-President gets to create secret death squads (!!!)

Wouldn’t it be nice to have a new, comprehensively linked, one stop shopping torture diary to reference?

I would go ahead and do it myself except for two things…

One, I would miss something….and two, I have a chance (and the energy) to go to the beach today < grin > and needed to write an essay to autopost for my slot today!

There are a few torture timelines out there to be had, including emptywheel’s

But they lack a connecting narrative that is also compelling. It is a worthy goal, but is this a good group project? If so, how would we do it?

One idea, each person takes a chunk of the timeline, perhaps a chunk they are already familiar with and develops the narrative and then we can group edit?

All other ideas are welcome as always!

  1. I don’t have the cred on Orange that you do, Buhdy, which is why you can and others can be such a great help.

The ultimate torture diary can help. I pulled a big number together this morning and crossposted it here, and one guy thought I copied and pasted it. I was proud I tricked him into thinking I am a professional!

We need to bang the drum over and over until it gets Loud. We need to email and call The WH, the AG and Congress about H.Res 383 and a SP ever damn day.

    Yell Louder.

The moderates still don’t get it. What’s the point of winning elections if you don’t use the power?

No more bipartisanship with FAIL and corruption.

    Yell fucking Louder!

  2. and 5 recs, too. It shows that if you get a large enough community you’ll find at least 6 people who you don’t want over for dinner.

  3. I can think of fewer things that can re-center me, reset my clock, as well as ocean rhythms, sounds, smells…

This comment is an aside, I have beach envy. 🙂

  4. I know that edger and PDND had talked about getting a database going, and Ill let them address that.

    Good idea.

And ACLU has an impressive website with documents and other stuff, also.

Worthington keeps a good running tally on Gitmo.

    Gobs of data out there.

And now… they are making noise about military prosecutors ready to proceed with cases against 66 of the more than 220 security detainees held at the naval facility in Guantánamo Bay. .

A ‘compelling connecting narrative” is whats needed, seems to me.

Because I would have just gone ballistic on that fucking idiot.

  5. I just wandered back on a scavenger hunt of  sorts, to old essays here, written by OPOL. (I got here after he slowed down, and took his leave of absence, but I know his work from DK posts).

So. Almost to the day a year ago, he posted Skating Scot-Free.

The likely outcome of the Bush-led Republican raid on America astonishes me.  As America’s national nightmare approaches the eight-year mark, the Bush administration is apparently going to escape unpunished.  They are going to skate scot-free.  They have brazenly committed major crimes against the people of the United States, not to mention the terrible things they have done to much of the rest of the world…and these bastards are going to skate scot-free.

    July 12, 2008, OPOL

    And still, we are wait.

    (keep yelling)

Why bother posting there? They may be from the opposite end of the spectrum of what we usually call wingers but a winger is a winger is a winger.

    Satya.
