1 more time! Spain Will PROSECUTE Bushies. ¡Viva España!

    A Spanish judge has decided to go ahead with the prosecution of six Bush administration lawyers – including former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales – who were the architects of the legal framework for President George W. Bush “enhanced interrogation” program, according to a report in the Spanish newspaper Publico. (Original article here; Google translation here.)

    The six Bush administration alumni targeted in the prosecution are former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales; John Yoo, author of the “torture memos”; Douglas Feith, then a deputy defense secretary; Pentagon lawyer William Haynes II; former assistant attorney general Jay Bybee; and David Addington, a former chief of staff to then-Vice President Dick Cheney.

    I thought some upbeat dance music was in order to celebrate good news with. I am aware that salsa is NOT from Spain, thought the first two vids are. I figured the diversity should be celebrated.

   According to Raw Story Spainish law goes by the concept of “universal jurisdiction” which means that any crime anywhere in the world can be prosecuted by Spanish courts under Spanish law. If I were a Bushie I wouldn’t be taking that cruise in the  Mediterranean this year, or this century for that matter.

    Further, under Spanish law anyojne can file criminal charges against another party. In this case, it is civil right organizations and private lawyers who are filing the charges on behalf Sami El-Laithi, an Egyptian national and Jamil El-Banna and Omar Deghayes, who are British residents.

    Let’s all put our hands together for our brothers and sisters from the Great Nation of Spain, where the rule of law is respected, defended and revered and no holds barred prosecutions of Bush/Cheney’s war crimes are going to be starting very soon.

    It is unclear how the Holder Justice Department will react to the Spanish court’s request. Lawyers attached to the Audiencia Nacional state that during the Bush years, the U.S. Justice Department was not forthcoming in answering requests for information, even with respect to counterterrorism prosecutions the Spanish undertook with U.S. prompting. Holder, noting that this concern was broadly expressed by European law enforcement authorities, has pledged in several appearances in Europe to introduce a new spirit of cooperation with the European on counterterrorism matters. However, the case of the Gonzales Six presents an unusual challenge since former personnel from the Justice Department are clearly in the prosecutorial cross-hairs.

    Spanish authorities expressed particular puzzlement over Holder’s decision not to release a study prepared by the Department’s Office of Professional Responsibility that looks into the conduct of Yoo, Bybee and their successor, Steven G. Bradbury. This report has been five-years in the making. “This report probably contains a good deal of the information that is being sought in the interrogatories,” one court investigator told me.
