PORT-AU-PRINCE – A strong earthquake measuring 6.1 on the moment magnitude scale shook Port-au-Prince, eight days after the Haiti capital was virtually razed by a 7.0 quake.

The latest earthquake struck 59 kilometers (36 miles) west of the city, according to the US Geological Survey.

It came as Haiti struggles with the aftermath of its devestating January 12 earthquake that is thought to have killed 100,000 to 200,000 people.

Residents reported a low vibration followed by a brief but more powerful rumbling shake at 6:03 am (1103 GMT).

AFP reporters in Port-au-Prince saw no immediate sign of damage or casualties, but a crashing sound was heard — suggesting an already damaged building may have collapsed.

In the Petionville district, AFP staff said the quake was felt for around 10 seconds.

The US Geological Survey initially measured Wednesday’s quake at 6.0, striking at a depth of 9.9 kilometers (6.2 miles) at 6:03am (1103 GMT).

The Richter scale (very simplified) is a way of measuring strength of quakes. e.g. 6 is ten times more powerful than a 5, and 7 is ten times more powerful than 6 (100 times more powerful than 5.

So this mornings quake was about ten times less powerful than the big one last week.

They’re probably pretty shook up, and scared of another one, but they should be alright, relative speaking.

I was in the OR and we felt some brief movement but everyone is fine. Stuff got knocked down and everyone got a little nervous. Just Mother Earth getting more comfortable.

Anybody figure out how to get a Duncan Donut franchise started down here? You’d make a fortune. I may set one up after as part of the redevelopment, that is, when the earth stops moving.

  2. sorry no virtual donuts this morning, but I found this for you. 🙂  (no idea if it’s quite up your alley, but I tried!)

Mother,I sing this song for you

I see your smile in the silver moon

I feel your heartbeat in the earth.

    The flame,the sea,the air,the stone.

These hold your Glory. Your beauty untamed.  I feel your love in my workings.

Be they spell, poem, or song. I feel you in my life each day.

In loving and dreaming, thou art there. You are with me always. My thanks to you sweet lady, my praise to you great goddess. My love to you eternal mother . So mote It Be!

Father I sing this song for you. I see your smile in the blazing sun. I feel your energy in the world around.

The flame, the air, the sea,the stone. These hold your power. Your nobility. I feel your love in my workings.

Be they spell, poem or song.  I feel you in my life each day. In labor, and laughter, and sorrow. In loving and dreaming thou art there.

You are with me always,my thanks to you gracious lord. My praise to you great god.My love to you gentle father. So mote It Be!

  3. Glad you are still safe.

The only thing I think I can do is go buy a bunch of donuts & give them to the hungry homeless here, since I doubt you`d ever receive them.

Another thing I wondered about was, why was Bush, that war criminal, invited in, but Jimmy Carter we`ve not heard about.

I bet he`d be manning the barricades in keeping weapons out of your hospitals.

Good luck & I`ll keep a light on for you & yours.

I`ll be talking to one of my brothers tomorrow who worked with Haitians & in Haiti during his 30 plus years in aid to underdeveloped countries or developing countries, in a capacity I won`t mention here till I talk to him, (for his privacy).

He always tells me not to worry about it, but I prefer to ask.

I`ll report back tomorrow about what he has to say.

    Get some rest.

    A mandala for you.
