Liveblog interview with Congressman Joe Sestak (with Updates!)

Thanks for the frontpagey goodness budhy! : )

Crossposted at Daily Kos

I am thrilled to announce that Congressman Joe Sestak (D-PA08) is live in a liveblog interview with me at TheProgressiveElectorate.com I have posted the body of my part of the interview below the fold and will be adding updates with Congressman Sestak’s commentary. If you wish, we are thrilled to have you join us and ask any questions you like of the Congressman as he fights to be the true Democratic voice for Pennsylvania in the US Senate.

Please join us at TheProgressiveElectorate.com where we would love to hear your input.

Thank you for joining us this evening. The ProgressiveElectorate is honored tonight to be hosting this exclusive liveblog interview with sitting Democratic Congressman and former 3 star Navy Admiral Joe Sestak who represents Pennsylvania’s 8th district and is currently challenging current Republican Democratish Senator Arlen Specter in the Democratic primary for the upcoming Senate election in Pennsylvania.

Before we start, I’d like to introduce Congressman Joe Sestak to our readers.

Joe Sestak was elected to Congress in 2006 to represent the 7th Congressional District where he was born and raised. During a distinguished 31-year career in the United States Navy, Joe attained the rank of 3-star Admiral and served in the White House, Pentagon, and in operational commands at sea. He is the highest-ranking former military officer ever elected to either branch of Congress. He attended the Naval Academy and later earned a Ph.d. in Political Economy and Government from Harvard University. After retiring from the Navy, Joe returned home to Delaware County, Pennsylvania, with his wife, Susan, and daughter, Alex, and proudly represents the 7th District.

Before asking Representative Sestak a few questions of my own, I would like to thank him again for joining us here tonight, and, of course, I strongly encourage anyone who is reading this to join in with Congressman Sestak and I with any questions they’d like to ask. The more the merrier, I always say.

   Now, on to the show.

Tom Friedman: Home alone.

Tom Friedman’s latest op-ed, entitled “Adults Only, Please,” surprisingly featured Tom Friedman.  Wandering from room to empty room of political discourse on the economic meltdown, Tom pauses:

Sometimes you wonder: Are we home alone?

Now I get it: Tommy finds it unnerving to be left home alone in his 11,400-foot mansion while the bad guys from Wall Street are trying to break in.  I actually sympathize with his sentiments, and suggest he begins booby-trapping the place.

But no, Tom: Do not invite Bernanke in, no matter what he promises to do for General Growth Properties.  Hoping Bernanke will re-inflate your bubble is what you call “situational” ethics, as opposed to “sustainable” ethics, the latter of which suggests we’re all better off if you ice the steps and clock Bernanke with a can of paint.  Have fun with the bad guys!

Obama SOTU Drinking Game!

You can live blog it here! I will be live blogging one next door on WWL.

You have to take a sip of your beverage of choice every time he says “Our Safety” or “Security.”

Make it a long slug if he says “Wall Street” and “Reform” in the same breath without even a touch of a twitch.

Do a shot every time he says “Grow the economy,” or the “Fight.”

A double shot for every time he says “Moving Forward.”

If he mentions that the HCR bill is a good thing in any way, forget the shot glass go ahead and drain half the bottle.

Hit the bong once for any mention of Al CIAduh, and shot gun it to the person on your left if that mention is followed by a “Bin Laden.”

One line of sweet Peruvian Pink if he says ‘Bipartisanship” or “Reaching Across the Aisle.”

Go straight for the mescaline if he saber rattles Iran.

One square of Mr Natural blotter acid if he talks of war in Yemen.

One MDMA if he speaks of “Israel’s Security.”

Tap a vein for street heroine if he claims “Success” in his first year.

If he blames liberals? Just shoot your TV’s.

I figure the live blog will last less than 4 minutes before we all pass out, in desparate need of our stomachs pumped.

The Oracle has Spoken. Be here at 9 for the show. Heh.

The State Of The Union: Preview

Regardless of what President Barack Obama says tonight during his “speech“, this below is the real State Of The Union:

The State Of The Union

__

Until this high corruption is exposed and honestly dealt with, at a Presidential level, American citizens will just continue to be systematically robbed blind, see their own standard-of-living and economic security continue to diminish, and the purchasing power of the “U.S. Dollar” shrink before their eyes.

No amount of “happy talk”, phony Federal Reserve Chairman worship, or “small-ball” policy tinkering around the edges (tax cuts, “stimulus”, etc.) can ever supplant what is fundamentally a wholly corrupt Financial and Monetary model.

The true State Of The Union must be finally recognized for what it really is. The United States is owned and operated by an elite Worldwide criminal Banking cartel (modeled after the Rothschilds dynasty banking empire), and our Country’s so-called “Independence“, that we celebrate every 4th of July, is now only just a myth today .

We never permanantly escaped the Empire and Central Bank Monopoly that we once had separated from. Conversely, we were inflitrated by it, and today we remain trapped within the “Empire”.

Abortion is murder!

It’s just been discovered that more abortions happened in 2009 than were previously known. This is a shocking revelation, compounded by the fact that there is no outrage over this. Nobody in the so-called pro-life movement is bothering to discuss this revelation.

I’m sickened.

I would think that pro-life organizations would want to stop these people from doing this to our country. Abortion is murder, right? These people are being allowed to do this because of an erroneously decided Supreme Court decision! I mean, the judges were clearly being activist when they decided it. This decision supposedly allowed more “freedom” to people but what it really does is allow more people to commit abhorrent acts under the guise of the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. This is obviously not what the people who wrote that amendment intended.

And it’s not even for the stupid “health” of the mother.

Just look at some of these people who are doing this:

By the end of Dec. 2008 as announced Circuit City Filed Bankruptcy, they promised to keep all

stores open for the holiday season, but afterwards, they plan on closing 155 stores nationwide.

Aborted. Just like that.

Administrations should befriend the locals — they’ll need them in hard times

By Sally Quinn, The Washington Post

Wednesday, January 27, 2010; 9:34 AM

I get asked almost every day how Washington life has changed since the newcomers came to town. The answer is: not at all. In fact, it’s probably duller than it’s ever been. This is nobody’s fault, per se, nor is it necessarily a bad thing. These are difficult times, and it’s just the way it is.

Years ago, the city looked to the White House to set the social tone. Whatever style the president and first lady favored was the style adopted. The Kennedys enthralled the town with their youth, exuberance and glamour. They had round skirted tables at a state dinner, and suddenly everyone had round tables. The Johnsons came in with their down-home Texas barbecues and you couldn’t go out at night without being served ribs and baked beans. It wasn’t until Nixon that people started to do their own thing. He introduced U-shaped tables, like the Russians, and instructed the White House guards to wear imperial hats. Most of those close to the president (except for Henry Kissinger) were distanced from the establishment. Inevitably, hostility toward the White House grew.

Indulge me for a moment on the topic of our cultural bellwether, “Avatar.” In the film, the Pandora natives worship the goddess Eywa, who is the spirit that connects them to their planet. If there is such a goddess in Washington, I believe, it is the spirit of community. Those who live here want to welcome new friends. Washingtonians are open and willing to invite newcomers and make them part of their lives. If they can’t do that, there is automatically a distance that is created so that if — no, make that when — the administration gets into trouble, there is too little sympathy or support.

When an administration begins to express hostility to those in the community, the Na’vi pull out their arrows with the poison tips and begin taking aim. The rougher things get, the more members of the administration need to reach out, not withdraw. Nobody has ever been able to master this yet. Consequently everyone suffers — needlessly.

Splitting the Difference

So tonight we find out whether the Democratic Party embraces Populism…….or death.

For eight years We The People were under assault. Tax cuts for the rich made the poor suffer. Rampant deregulated greed on WallSt and in Corporate boardrooms made the middle class suffer. lack of health care made everyone suffer. Two wars, on run with criminal negligence and the other just a complete fuck up on every conceivable level made the world, our troops and our budget suffer. Fascist fearmongering made our Constitutional Rights suffer. And of course……torture. Which makes every feeling person suffer the degradation of regressing to our animal nature.

After eight years of The People suffering, and one year of pretending we weren’t and that Republicans were something other than the downright evil bastards that they have proved themselves to undeniably be….

We find out which side the Dems and Obama are on.

They either need to use this occasion to pick up the populist banner and dedicate themselves to helping The People, or to try to take some middle road, try to…..split the difference.

Split the difference with downright evil.

They can either try half assed measures to ameliorate and mitigate the suffering of The People, which won’t work as the past year has taught us, or they can in effect declare war on the forces that are causing The People to suffer.

One leads to victory in 2010 and a step closer to something resembling an age of political Enlightenment, a rejection of what amounts to an insanity of repetition of failed policies and attitudes.

The other, a de facto embrace of all that is wrong with our government by trying to steer a safe middle path between downright evil and the real needs of The People.

The result of that will just be more of the same obviously corrupt, bankrupt and ineffective “reform” that is being touted as the solution…..and they cannot even do that.

They cannot even pass “reform,” because they continue to try to play on the Republican playing field. A playing field that is built on the premises and framing of the folks that brought us eight years of downright evil.

Only to be replaced by an administration that is trying to ignore that fact…That is trying to split the difference between doing what is right and surrendering to the desires of the very entities and forces that caused the problems that are causing the suffering.

You cannot split the difference with evil and sonmehow come up with good.

The evil, the suffering, the ‘reality’ of the Republicans must be rejected, and the greatest Good for the Greatest Number must be embraced.

Or the Democrats are dead in 2010.

Rejected by The People who have NO choice but to reject those who will not serve them. Under our broken political system, which is a cause and reflection of our broken economic system, broken health care system, broken military and foreign policy system….and broken system of what is now an ex democracy.

Fix it or go home, Democrats. That is the message. And you just are NOT going to fix it by splitting the difference with the Republicans and their Corporate masters….without REAL and ‘radical’ change.

Fix it or go home.

Holy Moly!!!!

Had this sitting in my in-box since yesterday and didn’t view it then.

Toasters For Congress: A Video Contest

originally posted by Mitch Malasky at Sum of Change

Did you know that about 10 years ago, Ira Shorr of the Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR) sent a toaster to every member of congress to warm them about the danger of having nuclear weapons on hair-trigger alerts- “In the time that it takes to make toast, we could all be toast”. Mr Shorr has been PSR’s National Field Director for the last 25 years but is retiring this year. To celebrate his decades of activism for peace, our good friend David Hart (also the director of Grow the Hope) is holding a video contest for people to take their own stand on essential issues of our time, such as nuclear weapons and climate change. You can get all the info about the contest by going to www.PSR.org/video

Delay in Afternoon Edition- Update!

Computer is still wonky.  It seems to be malware or fucking Flashplayer/Firefox interaction.  I’m putting it up for a full AdAware scan and I have no idea how long that will take.  I’ll be back with Afternoon Edition as soon as I can manage.

Thank you for your constant indulgence.

Update:

I haven’t been able to keep my browser running for more than 30 minutes at a time since 6 am.

My next step is a fresh OS which will keep me busy for at least 6 hours.

I apologize to my readers.

My final activity while I back up my data will be to suggest some viewing alternatives for tonight, an essay I expect I’ll be unable to participate in.
