“For the Public Option. Just Not This One”

Warning. This is Not P.C.

Did you ever read something so mind bogglingly bereft of compassion, and so full of the banality of the banana slugs, it slimed the inner surface of your computer screen as you scrolled thru it ?

This much “advocacy” deserves a rewrite. This is the current apogee of argument for “reform.”  All I had to do was substitute a few words for other words, throughout the piece.   And this is what happens:

“I’m For A Public Option. Just Not This Public Option ”

I see a ton of enthusiasm for the public flogging.  I understand it.  Emotionally, I agree. Intellectually, not so much.

A public flogging is attractive on paper, but has some serious and real pitfalls, in my view.

I understand why people don’t want to let slaves escape on this, and also why they hate having commercial slave bearing ships, competing with their breeding operations.  But there are still some very practical, non procedural reasons to stop and think it all thru.

Health Care and Abortion

I really hate having to come back to this over and over again. Let’s get our abortion-and-health-care basics down folks. The Senate bill does nothing to change the standard we have lived by that no federal funding shall be used for abortion.

1 Bank payback plan faces failure as Iceland votes

by Marc Preel, AFP

REYKJAVIK (AFP) – Icelanders headed to the polls in drizzling rain Saturday in a referendum set to reject a bank repayment deal worth billions that many here consider a foreign diktat, but a “nei” vote is expected to plunge the country deeper into crisis.

“I will vote ‘no’ simply because I disagree very strongly with us… having to shoulder this burden” from the 2008 collapse of the online Icesave bank, Ingimar Gudmundsson, a 57-year-old truck driver, told AFP.

The issue is whether Iceland should honour an agreement to repay Britain and the Netherlands 3.9 billion euros (5.3 billion dollars).

This Week In Health and Fitness

Welcome to this week’s Health and Fitness. This is an Open Thread.

Haitians Facing ‘Intolerable Breach of Human Dignity’

Colette Gadenne, who has been managing Doctors Without Borders/Médecins San Frontières (MSF) activities in Haiti over the last few weeks, and Christopher Stokes, General Director of MSF in Brussels, recently returned from Haiti. Almost two months after the devastating earthquake, they gave their views on the situation and stressed “broadly insufficient” aid on the ground.

As is now custom, I’ll try to include the more interesting and pertinent articles that will help the community awareness of their health and bodies. This essay will not be posted anywhere else due to constraints on my time. Please feel free to make suggestions for improvement and ask questions, I’ll answer as best I can.

An Unbearable Likeness to Blogging

Well other than a few VERY bright spots, it has been a long hard winter for this feckless reporter. I’ve been washed by the wind, beaten by the rain, tried to keep going, but gave in to the pain. The bastards haven’t worn me down, but the unrelenting discomfort has. Just in case anyone hasn’t noticed, I haven’t been around much lately, lol.

But as spring approaches here in SoCal, I can feel my spirit rising with the sap and have sent out an amber alert for my muse, who apparently and wisely seems to have fled for warmer climes. Not even a postcard, sigh.

While the external production has not been there, hopefully the deep internal process I have been somewhat forced into will bear fruit on the tree of blogging soon…..but in the meantime it has been great watching you guys continue to find yourselves, and your voices and witness your various ruminations on genitalia.

I thought, as I wait for the sap to rise, the sparkle to return, and some semblance of fun to reinhabit my being, I should at least make a token appearance, let everyone know that I am fine and plan to return with a vengeance….someday….and encourage you all to carry on as the days get longer and we all adjust to incremental change and try to figure out how we can goose it in the behind at least a little bit!

See ya back in the trenches real soon I hope!

And the Democratic Establishment can kiss my DFH a$$ too

Bill Clinton Throws His Support To Blanche Lincoln

In a boost to embattled Dem Senator Blanche Lincoln – and a bit of a blow to primary challenger Bill Halter – fellow Arkansan Bill Clinton is throwing his support to the incumbent Senator, his spokesman confirms to me.

Halter’s entry into the race had kicked off a round of speculation about who Clinton would endorse, given that he hails from the state and remains very popular with Dem primary voters. If Clinton had remained neutral it would have been a big boost to Halter.

Clinton spokesman Matt McKenna tells me, however, that the former President is supporting Lincoln.

“Senator Lincoln asked President Clinton several months ago to support her reelection,” McKenna says. “He said he would, and he does.”

MARCIA ANGELL: And what do you think they’re going to do? If you were an insurance company, you would say, “Well, thank you, Santa Claus. I’ve got all of these captive customers. Young ones are healthy. They probably won’t even use the insurance. There’s nothing to stop me from raising my premiums. I have all of these subsidies coming in.” Don’t you think that the prices would go up? I think it would be remarkable if they didn’t.

The Collapsed Middle Class

When Talking About The Economy Now And The So Called ‘Capitalism Practiced’ Start Calling It Exactly What It Is, “Reaganomics”, i.e. ‘trickle down’ ‘free market’…………, there’s a hole host of meme’s used that sold this Con of what must be in order to advance? which when implemented was forecast by many then and over the years, last couple of decades, to do Exactly What It Did, Collapse The Once Growing and Proud Economic Reality That Was!!

Have no idea why those who are supposed to represent the working people don’t use the reality and voice it over and over, do know why th media don’t, they profit from not reporting the reality!

Rising Wages in Chnia

NEW YORK TIMES — “Just a year after laying off millions of factory workers, China is facing an increasingly acute labor shortage. As American workers struggle with near double-digit unemployment, unskilled factory workers here in China’s industrial heartland are being offered signing bonuses. Factory wages have risen as much as 20 percent in recent months (see chart).

Some manufacturers, already weeks behind schedule because they can’t find enough workers, are closing down production lines and considering raising prices. Such increases would most likely drive up the prices American consumers pay for all sorts of Chinese-made goods. Rising wages could also lead to greater inflation in China.

Reasons for the labor shortage?

For one, the Chinese government has rapidly expanded postsecondary education. Universities and other institutions of higher learning enrolled 6.4 million new students last year, compared to 5.7 million in 2007 and just 2.2 million in 2000. At the same time, China’s birth rate has been sliding steadily ever since the introduction of the “one child” policy in 1977. Labor shortages have returned quickly in recent weeks as these long-term trends have collided with a recovery in overseas demand for Chinese goods.

Consumer spending is also rising briskly; auto sales more than doubled last month from a year before, and this has created many jobs in retailing, restaurants, hotels and other inland businesses.

Though the wage boost increases the prospect of inflation, it may have another more salutary aspect. The Obama administration has been pushing China to let the renminbi rise against the dollar, which would erode some of China’s formidable advantage in export markets. Rising wages in China have the same effect – while also giving Chinese families more spending power.”

You Say You Got A Real Solution?

Well, you know

We’d all love to see the plan

You ask me for a contribution

Well, you know

We’re all doing what we can…

I would hope that somehow the Democrats will learn a lesson from knowing they are going to take a serious beating in November, and do something about it.

They have 8 months to get the progressive and independent votes back.

Plenty of time to create and pass some useful legislation, like a universal single payer HCR bill, and plenty of time to charge, try and begin prosecution of Bush, Cheney, and the rest of the war criminals.

Why, I bet they could even get away with not prosecuting Obama as an accessory after the fact, as long as they prosecute the others, and defund the wars and start REALLY getting out of Afghanistan and Iraq.

And plenty of time to charge, try and prosecute Paulsen, Geithner, Bernanke, and Lloyd Blankfein, and the upper management of AIG, and break up Goldman Sachs.

If they do these things in the next few months they can win November with landslides, and Obama might even win a second term two years down the road.

Making Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac public utilities would be icing on the cake.

Otherwise they are toast. And apparently republicans are worse. Somehow (scratches head in puzzlement).
