Ban BP from the Gulf

(noon. – promoted by ek hornbeck)

Thanks to 60  Minutes for opening the public’s eyes to the Safety violations committed by BP.

BP racked up millions in fines before disaster

LEE COUNTY: A new report shows BP has the worst track record among US refineries for workplace safety violations. Why did the US government allow it to continue operating before the oil spill?

Before the oil refinery exploded, 11 workers were killed and millions of gallons of oil contaminated the Gulf of Mexico, the US government knew of BP’s history of unsafe working conditions.

According to an analysis by the Center for Public Integrity, “Two refineries owned by oil giant BP account for 97 percent of all flagrant violations found in the refining industry by government safety inspectors over the past three years.”

But the Deep Horizon, is not the only drilling rig, BP is operating in the Gulf Of Mexico.

BP current has at least 5 other rigs in operation, including the Discoverer Enterprise currently siphoning the spill left by the Deep Water Horizon.

Holstein, Mad Dog, Development Driller III, Discoverer Enterprise, and GSF Development Driller II

BP had the most number of successful high bids at a total offered of $336 million.

One of the bids it won was for the Mississippi Canyon Block 252 (MC252), which includes the Macondo prospect well — the one currently leaking about 210,000 gallons, or 5,000 barrels, a day into the Gulf.

BP won the lease with a bid of $34 million for the 5,700 acre site, beating out nine other firms. The second highest bidder was LLOC Exploration Offshore, of Houston, Texas.

The environmental damage is untold. The economic damage is being realized as fishing boundaries close and hotels are empty. Workers are being exposed to hazardous VOC’s. The NWF and the Sierra Club is prepping local wildlife rehab centers for emergency oil cleanings.

In witnessing this devastation, how can we allow BP continue to operate? BP should be banned from drilling in the Gulf. Their licenses should be pulled and they should be thrown out. NOW!

Write you congresscritter and demand that BP’s drilling licenses are revoked – before we have to deal with another catastrophe – because profits win over safety.

  1. BP’s solution #1026

As of Dec 21, 2008 they had a net tangible worth of about 71 Billion.

Shut them down and seize their assets.

  2. that their assets get seized.  I think they should be liquidated and the proceeds should be used to pay for the clean up.

I also think that the “executives” who were involved in this and who obviously circumvented federal, law along with all of the regulators who did nothing to regulate them and issued permits without inspecting need a grand jury investigation of their activities.  Not another “study.”  A grand jury.  They need to be indicted for their many, manifest crimes.  And, of course, they  need to be tried and convicted.

I hope that people across the world will take out their sharpies, make signs, and demonstrate wherever BP does business: their refineries, their tanks, the gas stations, their offices, their warehouses.  I think there should be a nationwide boycott.

What I don’t understand is how on earth BP can be permitted still to be doing business as usual.  What kind of trance drug has the US population been injected with that it sits compliantly by and watches the Gulf be poisoned and suffocated to death?
