400 geese euthanized to reduce number near New York airports

New York (CNN) — Four hundred Canada geese from Brooklyn’s Prospect Park were herded into crates and euthanized last week in an effort to reduce their number near New York’s airports, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Measures to lower the number of Canada geese close to John F. Kennedy and LaGuardia international airports have been in place since last summer, said Carol Bannerman, spokeswoman for the USDA’s Wildlife Services.

New York City officials asked for federal assistance with solving the goose problem after US Airways flight 1549 was cripped by a bird strike and narrowly avoided crashing by successfully landing in the Hudson River in January 2009.

Canada geese shot to death in New Jersey

MOUNT LAUREL, N.J. – Authorities say 18 Canada geese were found beaten and shot in the head near a retention pond in western New Jersey.

…..

(Moorestown resident Chris) Cramer took three injured birds to a wildlife refuge over the weekend.

Mount Laurel Mayor Jim Keenan says the attack was “disgusting” and “a horrendous act against the animals.”

Police Chief Dennis Cribben says anyone charged with killing the geese faces a third-degree cruelty to animals charge.

the animals on this planet are going to get mad…

  1. so that kids can go watch transient geese be slaughtered.

    Disgusting.

  2. …. or they could at least not waste the meat, not poison the birds,  and donate it if they had no other alternative.

Of course all those park geese would be tame from people feeding them, so they were probably easy to catch.

Oh, and we’re screwing up their arctic habitat with oil drilling, leasing thousands of new acres for it,  and dumping greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere to melt the permafrost, so the Republican party can keep getting donations and the Blue Dogs can offer to write watered down legislation during August break, instead of going to renewable energy and efficiency.

    Meh. meh. honk.

  3. airport, and I remember the geese and swans there fondly.

  4. “We made the process as least stressful as possible for the geese,” she said.

    you’re right, NPK, no comment….

  5. GOD’s creation, the caretaker of GOD’s creation.  Man is the most important!  Man’s way of life is the most important.  Man is the Pinnacle and the Shepherd.  God ordained Man to maintain His way of life on the planet.

What is the importance of a few geese?  All they do is make a lot of noise and poop!  Man is the Master.

I’m sick to my stomach.  Where can I go to become a goose or a dolphin or a zebra?  I don’t want to be a part of this arrogant, ignorant, homicidal species anymore, unless I can be a member of an indigenous culture that respects all life!

And I can.  I hereby renounce my membership in the western european-US way of death and domination.  I declare my independence from this branch and proclaim myself indigenous.

  6. Why try and think of intelligent solutions?  Just kill ’em!  We just kill anything and everything these days!  Just kill, kill, kill!

    This is f..king deplorable!

There are ways of making “areas” uninviting to animals, birds, etc. without harming anything!  But that might require some thought and effort — so, just kill ’em.  Like Sarah Palin shooting wolves from planes!

Killing seems to have become a “sport” of this country — kids killing kids, people “sport” shooting other people all over the country, killing animals, ocean life, killing people with drones overseas, killing here, killing there — just KILL!

    Sick to my stomach!

  7. Just heard in the din of the background TV noise (Rachel Maddow) and a doctor commenting on Cheney’s condition — very faint pulse!

I feel nothing — except, I feel that he, too, like Polanski and so many, will have found a “way out” without facing the consequences of his destruction and evil!!!!!

  8. The geese are nesting now and have molted their flying feathers. In other words, they cannot fly away.

This is totally reprehensible and completely supported by Fish and Wildlife.

Considering that at one point, Canadian Geese were on the endangered species list (and even now, it is illegal to harm one without a permit).

The is the 2nd Annual massive culling effort initiated by Newark and JFK airports.

  9. seems to fit here…

  10. Cheney now has no pulse and no heart beat!  His Doc says this is normal with this proceedure as the pump takes over these functions and supplies blood in an even flow.

Question:  Does this mean Cheney could be substituted for the BOP in the Gulf?

surgery.  Dylan asked if he would go to the front of the line because he was one of the masters. (well, he didn’t word it that way.) Answer:  No, of course not.

    Crickets.
