GULF COAST, END DAYS

( – promoted by buhdydharma )

Lately, I`ve been not so enthused about the progress in the gulf.

I see the ramping up of activism in diaries with multiple posters, that, great unto themselves, the collective impact is much more than the sum of it`s parts.

It seems there has been a lack of enthusiasm on the part of the government to push for a final & definitive push to do a bottom kill .

I would not expect the officials at BP to listen to us,  but you`d think the government would.

I realize I`m a dreamer, but when I think  of all the damage, seen & unseen, to plant & animal life, I seem to be in a constant nightmare.

There is no will I can see from the government to do much.  We won’t know extent of ecological damage for many years.  And it’s out of news cycle now – though Dylan continues to keep at it.

Perhaps someone at Docudharma can write a letter to Obama.

btw, did anyone here notice that the oil man who was on Dylan’s quite often and who called out BP and the WH early on and had theories of his own was found dead in his home.

    I’m sorry I can’t remember his name.

And maestro, so lovely – Tak.

  2. nor do I!

I think BP is simply trying to put a “lip” on it all — for the time being.  I think they have EVERY plan to come back and explore the same area, i.e., busy working on a new “gig” or “gir!”

Since Dudley came in, I think the “attitude” he has conveyed is one of let’s get this over and done with and “move on.”

BP wants to wipe this all from our memories, sufficiently long, so as to ultimately go “back in there” and explore, explore, explore.  “Life?”  Life does not enter their minds, only profits!

Comme toujours, Knuck, j’aime tout de tes fotos.

Comment ont peut est plus despicable?

  3. What the oil industry offers us is comfort and death.

Comfort and death.  And death is black, and oily, and sludgy.

You cannot say you value life, while you value your own comfort and the destruction of life that causes you mere inconvenience for your own personal sense of comfort, and by that I mean, luxury that you could live without.

Let’s face it — life forms of all varieties kill.  Sometimes other species, sometimes their own.  This is not a moral observation — it is an observation of reality.  And they kill for their own continued sustenance, and sometimes, even their own amusement.  And, we are no different from animals in that regard, animals the Earth itself brought forth.  Even plants do this — kill other plants and even animals.  In the grand cosmic scheme of the biosphere, killing in and of itself is not wrong.  But that is as opposite to the life of the Earth itself.  It is not the killing that is wrong, or immoral, because that is what life has to do sometimes.  It is the killing that it out of proportion to the biosphere that is wrong.

We, human beings, are not the only life forms that exist on this planet, and if we were, we would all die ugly, agonizing deaths, as we choke to death on our own poisons.  That we have this power, the power to extinguish life that is not our own, should not be a cause of celebration, but rather of fear.

I do not accept this observation, on the part of some, that humans are evil, wicked, and that our existence is a blight.  That is simplistic thinking, and overall, inaccurate.  Rather, we are but one expression of the glory of life, only one, but not lesser than the other.   And life, all life, has limits, and we have transgressed ours.  It is time for us to think about how to limit and undo that transgression, but in a manner that is humanistic, that does not pay disrespect to life, even that of our own.

Because, ultimately, the life of this planet is more powerful than us.  It may not be more beautiful than us, all life being precious, but it will outlast us.

Human life is, yes, sacred and beautiful.  But, perhaps we should not only reject the Biblicalist philosophy that our control of life is paramount, but that we do not have the wisdom necessary to extinguish life on a global scale, and in so doing, the life that we could not extinguish, that so doing is impossible, that life, will outlast any of us human beings, is what might be more paramount.

Why do these pictures entrance us with their beauty?  Because life, down to the lowliest bacteria, down to the most dangerous virus, is beautiful.  And now, we have become a dangerous virus — beautiful, but perhaps deadly.  But, unlike the virus, we can anticipate that we are deadly, and choose to compensate for that.  It may be time, for all our sakes, as human beings, beautiful and deadly, to compensate for that deadliness, to Garden the Earth as opposed to despoiling it.

Because, really, with the population we have, those are our only two choices — to Garden the Earth, or to Despoil it.  But eventually, we will not be here — and we have to plan for a world without us, that can bloom without us, and plan this Gardening, that we have to do, with 7 billion people, with that in mind.  And, work for the time when we do not have an overabundance of beautiful, but sometimes deadly human beings.

And, the only way to do this humanely is through human prosperity.  Prosperity and the respect for human rights ultimately leads to relative depopulation.  And before the biblicalist lectures me, idiotically, that this will lead to the extinction of our species — I aver.  We can choose to expand the human race.  The diminution of the human race to achieve balance, not so easily.  But the statistics prove that prosperity without any other input leads to the relative decline of populations.  And I do not mean prosperity in terms of having everything you could want and gold besides.  That is what is fucked up here.  It is possible, to have a relative prosperity, without killing the entire earth and all of its lifeforms.

So, how do we achieve this depopulation?  Do we do it barbarically?  Or do we do it naturally?  When people have human rights, and community, and such technology as is necessary to have a level of relative comfort, without spoilage, such populations drop, over time, precipitously.

It is this solution I hope for, pray for, beg for.

Because, the alternatives are not pretty.

  4. This has been an extremely busy weekend, however, today should provide an opportunity to catch up a little.

Great photos as always.  Although more of these craatures are beginning to look familiar, “Serpentine Logic” and “Finger Leather and Cup Nubs” seemed new, or perhaps it was just a different angle, or something…

I’m not sure if you had a chance to see it yet, but I posted a lengthy comment on my essay in response to one of your comments, providing a number of links to various steam engine museums and festivals about the country.  Perhaps that occasional restlessness that preceeds a long road trip might be taking hold?

Hope you’re having a great weekend, Knuck!

  5. and stand back and watch him work!

Grasshopper: Is it good to seek the past, Master? Does it not rob the present?

Master: If a man dwells on the past, then he robs the present. But if a man ignores the past, he may rob the future. The seeds of our destiny are nurtured by the roots of our past.

Beautiful photos, Knuck, thank you for the lessons.

    Peace…
