Jan Schakowsky on the PBS NewsHour

(2PM EST – promoted by Nightprowlkitty)

Posted last night at DailyKos and Stars Hollow Gazette.

It was so good to see a bit of reality from an elected official. Last week Chris Bowers presented Jan Schakowsky’s deficit reduction plan and last night she spoke up on the TV.

You can find the transcript here. The interview is really worth viewing and really worth passing around. A proposal that says we don’t have to go after the middle and lower classes and should go after the rich coming from an elected official was refreshing.

But will anybody else ever hear Rep. Jan Schakowsky?

    Check out the entire transcript but;

    JUDY WOODRUFF: Now, as you say, you mentioned revenue increases. It is the case that you do rely more heavily than they do on tax increases. In fact, two-thirds of your plan would come from higher taxes on corporations, on individuals earning over $100,000 a year.

    Why that focus?

    REP. JAN SCHAKOWSKY: Well, you know, we have right now the greatest disparity in income from the rich to the poor and middle class than we have had since 1925, right before the Great Depression.

    And this kind of income inequality is not good for our economy. And it’s certainly not good for people who have seen their incomes stagnant or falling over the last couple decades. In fact, all of the growth in wealth went during the Bush years to the top — wealthiest people in our economy.

    It is not a good situation for us to be, as Nicholas Kristof has called, like a banana republic.

    This did not seem like an interview with an elected official, more like a progressive blogger and it going to be up to progressive bloggers to get this message out.

    Letters to newspapers and pressure on other elected officials who claim to be Democrats will help.

    Last night I had a conversation with myself in a Stars Hallow open thread about how the hell I could embed the video link on the PBS NewsHour page. I was stumped. Perhaps Edger can explaine that one to me.

    So then I went looking for it on YouTube. When I got there the video had 1 viewer, me. Now that I made a diary about it there has been 515 viewers.

    I felt like I accomplished something, not enough but it’s a start. Sadly if 515 watched what could be expected in the generation letters to the editor and other Democrats department? 5 perhaps 10 but it is 5 or 10 more letters.

    NPR did two features on All Things Considered this weekend that talked about the deficit and Social Security and not one mention of Schakowsky or even an interview with her.

    Not like she hasn’t been available either.

    Excellent guest shot with her and Dean Baker on on the Charlie Rose show on Friday, 11/19. A Democrat to rally ’round.
