(9AM EST – promoted by Nightprowlkitty)
So, this is probably my last diary here. Nothing too much to say…So long, and thanks for all the tips?
Anyway, a lot of people are lost politically in these parts. I have one piece of advice, one thing that gives me hope even in these dark days, one thing that keeps me going perhaps more than anything else: Howard Zinn’s wisdom. Please, please, please do yourself a favor and read Howard Zinn extensively if you haven’t already. The keys, I believe, to what politics is really all about (HINT: it’s not elections) are in his writings.
So…enjoy…you can start with these if you want to…

In part three of what was a series of interviews, historian, political scientist, social critic, activist, author and playwright Professor Howard Zinn talked with Real News CEO Paul Jay back in April 2009 about why so many people were convinced that Obama was anything more than what he appears to be given his actions and policies implemented since inauguration, and about how to create a mass popular movement to pressure Obama for progressive results in a supportive way, and concludes that social turmoil is not only not bad but necessary if it leads to something good in the sense of creating real change.

Howard Zinn: Social turmoil is not bad if it leads to something good
I’ll ask the same question now that I asked then…
Torches and pitchforks , anyone?
Can a large enough movement of people be created to start credibly threatening Obama now with political oblivion in 2012, not to throw him out, but to make it so loud and clear and unequivocal to him that he will have all the support and all the votes he will need for a landslide in 2012 only by producing results, or face being turfed out if he doesn’t? In other word force him into line?
may he be in a cool place now…
Thanks for the reminder rossl!
Your presence will be very much missed. Sorry to see you go.
I have no idea where you’re going, but hope its not to an unpleasant place.
I read “A People’s History” in the 1990s, and was forever changed from that point forward. I’ve actually given copies of “A People’s History” on a couple of occasions as graduation presents, assuming that if the recipient read it, they’d learn a whole different side of U. S. history than they’d been spoonfed in school.
I actually had a friend a few years ago who taught high school history and used “A People’s History” for her class. She enjoyed the luxury of residing in a very progressive community. Otherwise, such an act would probably be considered a capital offense in a Red State.
Also saw the 2004 film about Zinn, entitled, “You Can’t Be Neutral On a Moving Train”, which was great as well.
Zinn left some huge shoes to fill. Not sure who his heir apparent would be, if such a person even exists.
Wherever you’re headed, I sincerely wish you the very best going forward, rossl!
Take care and safe travels.
