Fox News Makes You Dumb and Dumber!

(11AM EST – promoted by Nightprowlkitty)

In the 1994 film Dumb and Dumber, Lloyd Christmas (Jim Carrey) and  Harry Dunne (Jeff Daniels) are a couple of nitwits. After a series of unfortunate incidents Christmas and Dunne decide to go on a cross country trip in an old van that has been customized with tan shag carpeting on the outside and made to look like a giant sheepdog. Most Fox News viewers are like Christmas and Dunne, dumbly traveling in their sheepdog vans.

It doesn’t take a genius to tell you most people that watch Fox News are ill-informed idiots. However, a recent University of Maryland study confirms common belief. In fact, according to the research, the more you watch Fox News, the more misinformed you are about political issues:

“In most cases those who had greater levels of exposure to news sources had lower levels of misinformation. There were, however, a number of cases where greater exposure to a particular news source increased misinformation on some issues.

Those who watched Fox News almost daily were significantly more likely than those who never watched it to believe that most economists estimate the stimulus caused job losses (12 points more likely), most economists have estimated the health care law will worsen the deficit (31 points), the economy is getting worse (26 points), most scientists do not agree that climate change is occurring (30 points), the stimulus legislation did not include any tax cuts (14 points), their own income taxes have gone up (14 points), the auto bailout only occurred under Obama (13 points), when TARP came up for a vote most Republicans opposed it (12 points) and that it is not clear that Obama was born in the United States (31 points). The effect was also not simply a function of partisan bias, as people who voted Democratic and watched Fox News were also more likely to have such misinformation than those who did not watch it–though by a lesser margin than those who voted Republican.”

If you listen to Fox News, your understanding of economics and economic policies are most likely wrong and harmful to America. If you listen to Fox News you will most likely believe the stimulus bill lost jobs, the health care bill added to the deficit, and your taxes went up over the last year. If you listen to Fox News you mostly likely believe Obama created the bank bailouts (TARP), and the auto bailout. You would also most likely believe tax cuts for the rich stimulate the economy, and you are more likely to be a crazy ass “Birther” that question Obama’s birth certificate. And on every occasion you would be misinformed or an outright liar. I have a feeling, most Fox News viewers are simply dumb and getting dumber by the day. I’ll reserve the liar label to the Fox News demagogue personalities and executives.

Most Fox News viewers are simply nitwits driving across the country in their customized sheepdog vehicles or tiny scooters, making a mind numbing amount of stupid comments, and unwittingly being manipulated by others. Most Fox News nitwits believe scientists are evenly divided over issues like climate change and evolution. Once again, research has shown, Fox News viewers are like Christmas and Dunne, clueless dimwits trekking across the country.

  1. Does watching Faux Noose make people stupid, or do they need to be stupid to watch it in the first place?  Quite likely, those who begin watching their networkare ignorant to begin with, and then becomes even more so with repeated exposure to the 24/7 Murdoch-sponsored avalanche of prevarications.

Faux Noose seems to have applied the following observation by H. L Mencken to their benefit…

There is always a well-known solution to every human problem–neat, plausible, and wrong. — H. L. Mencken, Prejudices: Second Series, 1920

In response to this study, Faux Noose has taken the time-dishonored approach in which the guilty falsely attacks the credibility of the accuser.  The acronymn DARVO (Deny, Attack and Reverse Victim and Offender), as coined by  Jennifer J. Freyd, University of Oregon, seems to describe Faux Noose’s strategy to the letter.

So, how has the network of Beck, O’Reilly, & Co. responded to this report?  Predictably, by citing an unrelated report authored by Princeton University, which is heavily supported by the rich and powerful, to attack the University of Maryland for being a party school. Even if this were true, that would not mean that the study lacks credibility. Faux Noose would have us believe that those at the University of Maryland’s less diligent students are the same individuals who conducted this study.

Of course, if someone else were to cite the Republicans who have been convicted of crimes to contend that all Republicans are crooks (which may still be true, maybe not for all, but most), they would immediately attack such an argument as a blatant and self-serving case of overgeneralization.

If someone is guilty of rape and wants to beat the rap, the typical approach is to employ every avenue possible, whether real or manufactured, to discredit the credibility of the victim.

Does Faux Noose demonstrate a rapist mentality?  As they would say, “We report.  You decide.”
