Hate Crime sentencing? Not so much.

(2 pm. – promoted by ek hornbeck)

Teonna Monae Brown, 19, pleaded guilty today in a Baltimore court to one count of first degree assault and one count of a hate crime in the April 18 attack on Chrissy Lee Polis, 22.

Based on guidelines, Brown is expected to be sentenced to ten years in prison, with five of those years suspended.  A judge will officially sentence Brown on September 13th.

Brown’s 14 year old sidekick was charged as a juvenile and admitted her role July 1.  She was committed to a locked facility.

Pardon transfolk for feeling like this hate crime thing is not much in the way of protection.

    …for the vicious beating alone.

Maryland does not have us included in their Hate Crimes law, but Baltimore does.  It does not appear to have much in the way of teeth.

Of course, real protection would keep us from getting beaten in the first place.
