Those of you that read this regular series know that I am from Hackett, Arkansas, just a mile or so from the Oklahoma border, and just about 10 miles south of the Arkansas River. It was a rural sort of place that did not particularly appreciate education, and just zoom onto my previous posts to understand a bit about it.
Well, tonight is different because I have an update about Junior Jace Potter, the new kitten. And I also have to announce that henceforth I shall not use the term The Girl for The Girl. She told me Monday that since she was going to be 20 years old Tuesday I should henceforth refer to her as The Woman.
Back in June I wrote about her cat being killed and how we found a kitten to fill in for him. Tonight is part update on how he is going and part recap of her birthday party from yesterday evening.
In the text are some pictures of the gifts that I gave her, and Saturday night at 7:30 on the Big Orange I am guest hosting What’s for Dinner? with step by step directions for making the cheesecake in the picture here, with lots of pictures of the process.
Jace has bonded with me, and bonded with The Girl (she will not be 20 until midnight as I write on Monday evening before going to have a good night visit with her) as well. I am not so sure about The Little Girl, because she is a little rough with him as three years olds are want to be, but he at least tolerates her.
This afternoon Jace kept rubbing his face on The Girl’s chin, a sure sign of being territorial since cats have scent glands on their face. He was claiming her. It was sweet, and then he cuddled up against her beautiful bosom and just purred and purred.
Here is a fairly recent picture of him:
Here are some pictures from Monday that illustrate the slings and arrows of being Junior Jace Potter.
Note that The Girl seemed sort of camera shy in the one with Jace. Here are a couple of more that I tried to get of her:
I am now writing on Wednesday evening. The Woman and The Little Girl are at her sister’s house helping to take care of Josiah because her sister has an ear infection and does not feel well. She had her birthday celebration and it was really nice. He dad cooked hamburgers, hot dogs, and pork chops on the grill and her mum had all of the fixings inside. It was a good thing that she had her party on her birthday yesterday (the plans were a bit infirm until after noon) because it is teeming rain tonight.
After we ate, she opened her gifts. Her dad gave her $100 toward her education, her mum gave her some really cute shoes and a new pocketbook (zebra striped), her sisters gave her clothes, and I gave her a really nice teddy bear (I forgot to get a picture of it) with which she slept last night. I think that The Little Girl likes the bear as much as The Woman does, because she was latched onto it this morning when I went to see them.
Afterwards we had the cake (a Minnie Mouse one; the party had a Minnie theme) and ice cream. She served the cake and I served the ice cream. Since it was so crowded at her house I went back home. Around 10:30 everyone had left and we visited on her front porch for a couple of hours, then I went back home again.
She and I actually celebrated her birthday on Monday. I mentioned that I baked her a cheesecake Sunday and I brought it to her Monday early in the afternoon, along with a few roses that I bought for her and her new vase. It has become a tradition that I get her roses and a new vase on her birthday. Here are pictures:
We could not fit all three dozen roses in her new vase (on the left) so we had to put some on them in her one from last year. She seemed really to like the roses.
Well, this has not been very much about growing up in a small town. However, there is more to life than recollections of distant memories. The present is important, too, and I am lucky to have such a friend with whom to share some of the moments in the present.
