Tommy

(4 pm. – promoted by ek hornbeck)

I went into a public-‘ouse to get a pint o’ beer,

The publican ‘e up an’ sez, “We serve no red-coats here.”

The girls be’ind the bar they laughed an’ giggled fit to die,

I outs into the street again an’ to myself sez I:

O it’s Tommy this, an’ Tommy that, an’ “Tommy, go away”;

But it’s “Thank you, Mister Atkins”, when the band begins to play,

The band begins to play, my boys, the band begins to play,

O it’s “Thank you, Mister Atkins”, when the band begins to play.

I went into a theatre as sober as could be,

They gave a drunk civilian room, but ‘adn’t none for me;

They sent me to the gallery or round the music-‘alls,

But when it comes to fightin’, Lord! they’ll shove me in the stalls!

For it’s Tommy this, an’ Tommy that, an’ “Tommy, wait outside”;

But it’s “Special train for Atkins” when the trooper’s on the tide,

The troopship’s on the tide, my boys, the troopship’s on the tide,

O it’s “Special train for Atkins” when the trooper’s on the tide.

At least there won’t be many Tommies this time but there will be little or nothing for the families, widows and orphans let alone the old Tommies.

The rich and middle class need the money.

The poor need nothing because they know how to do without.

Best,  Terry

  1. We know the Tonkin Gulf encounter was a blown up farce.  I was represented by one of two senators in the whole damn Congress that voted against a full blown war that was beyond reason. Both men, formerly unassailable, were ousted first chance the voters got to do so.

    The problem with taking out the Butcher of Baghdad in Iraq, the former CIA asset, by itself was not a bad thing but the rationale was a perverted lie and the aftermath of attempting to remake Iraq was worse.

    Forgotten is the nasty business in the former Yugoslavia.  Things were messy but the results better than they might have been. Srebrenica stands out as a gross betrayal.

    I expect [read: hope] the latter to serve as a model.

    I personally believe the denials of Assad’s responsibility in Syria are less defensible than the manmade global warming denials but I leave that to others to decide for themselves.

    Best,  Terry
