The results are in for the most undemocratic method of selecting the Democratic and Republican presidential candidates, the Iowa Caucus, or any caucus for that matter. If you disagree, read this article MSNBC’s by Zachary Roth. Plus, I have family in Iowa who think this system stinks and most of them are Republicans. Leaving that aside, here are the results.
Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) won over billionaire Donald Trump by nearly 4% with Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) in a very close third. The title of the headline for the New York Times article is “Cruz Wins in Iowa, Dealing Humbling Loss to Trump” (emphasis mine), as if anything could humble The Donald.
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) are in a virtual dead heat, with Sec. Clinton holding a very slim lead.
So how does this matter? It doesn’t except in the delusional mind of The Village. The delegates are divided proportionally. So Cruz gets 8 delegates, Trump get 7 and Rubio gets 6. In case you’re interested, Dr. Ben Carson gets 2 and Sen. Rand Paul gets 1. Big Whoop.
As for Sec. Clinton and Sen. Sanders, they split the 42 Iowan Democratic delegates, so no matter who declares “victory,” it’s still a tie, for those of us who live in the real world.
Now for the people who have seen the handwriting on the wall. Former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley has “suspended” his campaign after having received less than 1% of the vote. Good move, Marty, considering how well you screwed up Baltimore when you were mayor. People do have memories that last longer than the next news cycle.
Also, former Mississippi Gov. Mike Huckabee announced on Twitter that he, too, has dropped out of the race. Real professional there, Mike. I expected him to announce it in some church but I guess he thought he might not be able to fill the pews.
On to New Hampshire and more circus. America needs to find a better way to select a president and cut some of the “fat.”
