Now I don’t often comment on these except to show you via ‘Vent Hole’ the floor is open if you have issues (Open Thread) but Carmen strikes a chord.
Carmen is an opera in four acts by French composer Georges Bizet.
- It must be long, boring, and in an incomprehesible foreign language (even if that language is English).
- The characters, especially the main ones, must be thoroughly unsympathetic and their activities horrid and callous.
- Everyone must die, hopefully in an ironic and gruesome way.
Ballet is the same, but with more men in tights and without the superfluous singing.
In summary Don Jose is a naive soldier seduced by the wiles of a Gypsy, the eponymous Carmen. He abandons his childhood sweetheart and deserts the Army only to have her (Carmen’s) heart stolen by Escamillo, a glamorous bull fighter. Don Jose kills Carmen in a jealous rage.
Wait! This is an opéra comique which you may think is a comedy but in fact only means that the songs are separated by dialog.
TMC promises she’ll cure me someday so I’m waiting on my Julia Roberts moment.
