Stars Hollow is kind of viscerally split between Yankees fans and Red Sox fans and they hate each other with the passion of a thousand burning suns. Likewise, as you get closer to the City there is a split between the Yankees and Metropolitans.
So here I am yesterday, deep in the heart of Red Sox country (you can hardly get deeper unless you live in Kenmore Square, which I have), wearing my Metropolitans Cap (classic Blue and Orange wool New Era, same as they wear on the field) and this guy comes up and accosts me saying, “You a Mets fan? I hate ’em!”
Somewhat taken aback I inquired if he was still holding a grudge from 1986. As it turns out he was a Yankees fan “from away” as we say here, and I gave him the well intentioned advice that it was an allegiance he might wish to be less open about. Seriously, I know Bars in this town where he’d be lucky to leave with all the teeth he came in with. They never complained about my cap.
And that’s my point, I don’t have anything against the Red Sox (or the Yankees for that matter) because I find all Junior League Ball a silly sport that bears only a passing resemblance to Baseball. Last year Chase Utley broke Ruben Tejada’s leg with a hard slide. That’s Baseball.
The Red Sox (93 – 69) are visiting the Indians (94 – 67) tonight because they kind of lost focus at the end of the season which is never a good sign but they did win 4 of the six Regular Season meetings.
The Indians will be sending Trevor Bauer (R, 12 – 8, 4.26 ERA) out against Rick Porcello (R, 22 – 4, 3.15 ERA) for the Red Sox. It’s been a long time for the Indians but it’s Big Papi’s last season so pick your sentimental favorite as you like.
