Sunday Sauce Isn’t a Recipe. It’s an Event

I’m only one-eighth Italian, but my love for any food that that ends in a vowel runs deep. Sadly, though, the Nonna in my family was long gone by the time I came around, so I never experienced the time-honored ritual of an entire Sunday devoted to simmering, stirring, and eating a huge pot of red sauce infused with a variety of fork-tender meats—not to mention the gathering with a huge crowd of friends and family to devour it with plenty of pasta. But that doesn’t mean I don’t have Sunday Sauce goals. I just had to devise my own slightly more streamlined methods for achieving them.

After all, as romantic as it sounds to spend all day in the kitchen surrounded by the aromas of slowly sizzling onions and savory sausage, I have a lot of other stuff to do. So I figured out how to cram an all day project—or all weekend if you count the shopping—into just a few hours. Why? Because life is short. How? By making a few smart decisions that streamline the process without sacrificing long-cooked flavor. Here’s how to get sauced.
