There it is again… that “timeframe”

Condi Rice in a Washington Post article stated (I’m linking to AmericaBlog’s recount):  What is more important than current controversies, she argued, slapping the table for emphasis, is how the decisions will look 25 or 30 years from now. “If you get very focused on whether someone thinks your policies are popular, you won’t do the right thing,” she said.

Why do we continually see this timeframe?

In a Washington Times interview, Dick Cheney stated: “I’m personally persuaded that this president and this administration will look very good 20 or 30 years down the road in light of what we’ve been able to accomplish.”  Now, Condi uses the same timeframe; 25 to 30 years.

Do you think this is coincidence?  Neither do I.  But, this goes way beyond a mere talking point — think, peak oil.  But, before we get to that, how about a little history lesson.

In July 2003, Judicial Watch reported that FOIA requests showed that VP Dick Cheney reviewed maps of Iraqi oil fields during his “secret” energy task force meetings that included Big Oil executives.

(Washington, DC) Judicial Watch, the public interest group that investigates and prosecutes government corruption and abuse, said today that documents turned over by the Commerce Department, under court order as a result of Judicial Watch’s Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit concerning the activities of the Cheney Energy Task Force, contain a map of Iraqi oilfields, pipelines, refineries and terminals, as well as 2 charts detailing Iraqi oil and gas projects, and “Foreign Suitors for Iraqi Oilfield Contracts.” The documents, which are dated March 2001, are available on the Internet at: www.JudicialWatch.org.

The Saudi Arabian and United Arab Emirates (UAE) documents likewise feature a map of each country’s oilfields, pipelines, refineries and tanker terminals. There are supporting charts with details of the major oil and gas development projects in each country that provide information on the projects, costs, capacity, oil company and status or completion date.

So, as early as March 2001, a mere 6 months prior to 9/11, VP Cheney was looking to see how Big Oil could get its hands on Iraq’s oil reserves.

I won’t even get into the Iraqi Oil Law which was nothing more than a giveaway to Big Oil, that is well documented, as is the fact that Iraqi’s Parliament such law was the benchmark that Bush/Cheney were pushing to be accomplished.

The International Energy Agency predicts that non-OPEC oil producers will hit peak oil by 2010.  

The International Energy Agency based in Paris is conducting a study of the conditions of the oil fields of the major oil producing nations – I believe the first of its kind by a respected national or international agency.   Among other things it will try to assess decline rates of existing fields and the projecte the adequacy of new supplies expected to come on the market.

The study is expected to be released in November.   In the meantime the well respected analyst leading the study, Fatih Birol, has released an interim report that says non-OPEC oil production will peak in 2010.  

You can see by this article why Bush and his cronies continually spout a 25-30 year timeframe on when “Americans will decide George Bush was a great man”.  OPEC itself states that peak oil is near.

“while some of the more pessimistic oil specialists are declaring that peak oil has already been passed, or at best is here now, others believe it is not going to arrive before 2010. Some optimists give the world a little more breathing space – that is to say up to 2020, and perhaps even up to 2030. However, all in all, most would appear to agree that peak oil output is not very far away for all of us. It could take place sometime within the next decade or so, which in fact means that there is not much time left for a world economy to be driven largely by oil.”

While I can no longer find the links, there were numerous studies done (I linked to them in one of my Daily Kos blogs, but, that account is no longer active) which stated that OPEC producing nations would hit peak oil within 40 years.  However, I was able to find this article.

Most studies estimate that oil production will peak sometime between now and 2040, although many of these projections cover a wide range of time, including two studies for which the range extends into the next century.

So, what we are being told by Condi, Cheney, and Bush, is that within 25-30 years, the world, even OPEC, will hit peak oil, and the United States having access to the oil in Iraq will make it “easier” for the United States — ergo, Bush will be a hero for invading Iraq and getting access to that oil.

Should we be listening to this screed by these hucksters?

Yes.

Considering that the CIA tried to coup Chavez in Venezuala in 2000, invaded Iraq in 2003, and tried to get into a war with Iran, all three involving “regime change”, ie, U.S. friendly governments, we’d better listen.  

Why?

Because Iran, Iraq and Venezuala are the three OPEC producing nations with the largest share of untapped reserves.

So, if “those in the know” realized years ago that the world will hit peak oil within a few decades, why aren’t we investing now in alternate energy?

Money.

Power.

At the expense of the people.

Why invest in something that makes cheap energy when you can control the one energy everyone needs, and, that will soon be in short supply — ergo, will be expensive and everyone must pay for?
