Email from Siegelman: Tell Specter to Release Hold on Holder

This diary is in the way of a community alert.  Over the fold is the body of an email being sent out by Don Siegelman about Specter’s hold on the Holder confirmation.  Let’s sound off on this.  These creeps are trying to subvert justice.

The confirmation of President Obama’s choice for U.S. Attorney General, Eric Holder, is being held up by Senator Arlen Specter and others.

Please call Senator Specter’s office and voice your disapproval. Ask the Senator to release his hold on the confirmation of Mr. Holder.

As you know, there is much work to be done by the next Attorney General in investigating the firing of the U.S. Attorneys and Karl Rove’s involvement in my prosecution. The new Attorney General will be able to facilitate the House Judiciary Committee’s investigation of the use of the Department of Justice as a political weapon and those who abused their power.

Also, please urge your delegation to support a full investigation into all of the abuses of power of the Bush Administration.

Tell Congress we cannot let the wrong doings of the past Administration be swept under the rug.

Demand action! Tell Congress to keep digging for the truth!

    Other countries are likely to take action against officials who condoned torture, even if the United States fails to do so. Remarkably, the confirmation of President Obama’s Attorney General nominee, Eric Holder, is being held up by Texas Republican Senator John Cornyn, who apparently is unhappy that Holder might actually investigate and prosecute Bush Administration officials who engaged in torture. Aside from this repugnant new Republican embrace of torture (which might be a winning issue for the lunatic fringe of the party and a nice way to further marginalize the GOP), any effort to protect Bush officials from legal responsibility for war crimes, in the long run, will not work.

    It is difficult to believe that Eric Holder would agree not to enforce the law, like his recent Republican predecessors. Indeed, if he were to do so, President Obama should withdraw his nomination. But as MSNBC “Countdown” anchor Keith Olbermann stated earlier this week, even if the Obama Administration for whatever reason does not investigate and prosecute these crimes, this still does not mean that the Bush Administration officials who were involved in torture are going to get a pass. . . .

    Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee want Eric Holder to commit to not prosecute Bush administration officials for their involvement in acts of torture.

    Republicans on the Judiciary Committee have asked Eric Holder to make a commitment, before he is even confirmed, that he will not prosecute any Bush Administration officials for their involvement in acts of torture during the last administration.

       In an effort to derail the nomination of Attorney General-designate Eric Holder, it seems Senate Republicans are now resorting to extortion. They’ll confirm Holder if he promises not to prosecute any Bush Administration officials for any involvement in acts of torture, according to Senator Sheldon Whitehouse(D-RI). . . . .

    someone else did and Specter is babysitting it?  Wonder if it is the same Senator who put a hold on Solis.

  6. has subpoenaed Karl Rove to testify next Monday.

    On Monday, House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers (D-MI) issued a subpoena to Karl Rove, requiring him to testify regarding his role in the Bush Administration’s politicization of the Department of Justice, including the US Attorney firings and the prosecution of former Alabama Governor Don Siegelman.

I’m starting to wonder whether Specter and Cornyn are pretending to bash Holder on his views on torture (such bashing at least is popular with the pro-torture, medieval Republican “Base”), when in reality they (and the entire GOP leadership) are far more concerned that under Holder the DOJ will be an aggressive investigator of criminal fraud in corporate America, especially in investment banks, hedge funds, and now-defunct brokerage firms on Wall Street. After all, a lot of CEO’s and CFO’s did a lot of stealing from shareholders and from the public, and a lot of boards of directors failed in their responsibility to stockholders.

    The Republicans cannot very well say publicly that they really oppose Holder’s nomination because they are afraid that he might go after such corporate criminals, i.e., the GOP’s most important and generous consituency and donor base. If Cornyn and Specter were to make such an admission, they would be shouted out of the room even by most grassroots Republicans. The only support for such political resistance to going after the corporate crooks lies with the one-tenth of one percent of the population that constitutes the country’s looting class.
