What else was the CIA lying about?

Panetta: “Agency officials did indeed mislead Congress and did so since 2001.”

Investigate and Prosecute Bush/Cheney

Now that Torture News Roundup has been discontinued for the time being I would like to carry on the hard work of Meteor Blades, Valtin and Patriots Daily News Clearinghouse.

This will be an ongoing series of diaries detailing the evidence of criminal behavior engaged in by the Bush/Cheney Administration as well as the need to fully investigate and prosecute the Bush/Cheney Administration. I would like to find two or three other diarists who want to contribute to this series on a rotation so that we can keep others informed on a daily basis. If you wish to contribute please e-mail me at [email protected]

Some reports state that the lies were in regards to torture, others say they are not. Who is to say what these “false statements” were? I will leave the issue of what the CIA was lying about be discussed in the comments below.

In a Tuesday letter to his committee’s top-ranking Republican, Peter Hoekstra of Michigan, that was obtained by Congressional Quarterly, Reyes, D-Texas, wrote that the committee has recently received information that reveals significant problems with the intelligence agency’s reporting to the panel.

“These notifications have led me to conclude this committee has been misled, has not been provided full and complete notifications, and (in at least one occasion) was affirmatively lied to,” Reyes wrote.

Keith Olbermann seems to nails the whole issue on this one

” We didn’t lie to you, but we didn’t tell you the truth, either”

So the CIA lied, but, about what? Was it over torture, or illegal warrantless wiretapping, or something we haven’t even heard of yet?

What’s more, how are we to believe future intelligence if we know that past intelligence has been false. Are we to just “go with our gut?”, if so, what the hell do we need a CIA for?

Today Congress will meet to discuss H.R.2701 The Intelligence Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2010 (Rep. Reyes – Intelligence). This bill will fund Federal Intelligence agencies through 2010, but the Democrats have included a provision in that bill that would demand that the House shall choose which of it’s members are briefed by Intelligence agencies instead of allowing the Executive branch or the Intelligence agencies themselves to choose who shall hear what. President Obama has stated that he will veto the bill if it includes such a provision. This begs the question; why?

“President Obama threatened to veto the pending Intelligence Authorization Bill if it included a provision that would allow information about covert actions to be given to the entire House and Senate Intelligence Committees, rather than the so-called Gang of Eight.” The White House claimed an expansion would undermine “a long tradition spanning decades of comity between the branches regarding intelligence matters.”

Why would it be in the interests of the President to side with the GOP on this issue?

The only person in Washington who thinks that members of Congress can not be trusted with Security matters is Michele Bachmann. Why would the President willfully limit the Legislative branch ability to use checks and balances in matters of national security, or to verify the legitimacy of such intelligence? Why is it so bad that the entire House and Senate Intelligence Committees might be informed on matters of intelligence?

We have seen how Rep. Jane Harmon (D-CA) was blackmailed into supporting legislation that permits Un-Constitutional warrantless wiretapping. Wouldn’t these kind of circumstances be easily avoided if more members of Congress were privy to intelligence issues?

We already know that the CIA lies to Congress. We know that when only a few members of Congress are briefed it makes it very difficult to prove the legitimacy of any intelligence provided by the CIA.

So, what is the real problem, Mr. President?

More importantly, there is the question of what the CIA was lying about, and why? Which issues was he lying about?

We need a full investigation that leads to prosecution of the Bush/Cheney Administration if we ever hope to find out what was really going on in the White House for the last 8 years.

On the CIA website, there is a virtual tour of the HQ building in Langley. It opens with…

“The CIA’s Original Headquarters Building was designed in the mid-1950s by the New York firm Harrison and Abramovitz.”

    I think that’s true.

  3. confusion techniques, that twist and turn words to mean whatever, are really getting on my nerves.

    They lied

    Kept secrets

    It was status quo

It might have been wrong, but who do they answer to to tell?

I know it sure sounds wrong, then somebody says something else and is it really wrong?  and on and on.

and, MoT, do you read this guy? Spencer Ackerman

…could it be that Panetta thinks that if he doesn’t start going to Congress with accounts of mistakenly withheld programs, the public pressure to investigate the agency even further will intensify, and so he might view this disclosure as a necessary ante in order to spare the agency a deeper scrutiny?

    wtf? jujitsu??
