No one, of course, can speak for a dead hero.
But today as everyone honors his memory…..and seems to forget what he stood for…
I would rather take this second to have us all ask ourselves what Martin would be saying about the issues of the day.
What would he say about escalating AfPak and Drone killings?
What would he say about Wall St. preying on the weak?
What would he say about there STILL being a permanent underclass in America….and it still consisting of a disproportionate number of people of color? 40 years after his death.
Etc.
And what would he be DOING about it?
And how, lol, would the Dem establishment be reacting?
We all have only our subjective answers to these questions.
But I am guessing that Martin would not be heeding the calls to STFU for “the Good of the Party,” lol.
Thank You, Martin. RIP.

“Unf’ingbelievable! How the eff did all this happen? Didn’t anybody pay any f’ing attention???”
democratic party. Sure, some democratic party members, and democratic voters were in the civil rights movement, but the movement wasn’t a function of the democratic party. MLK was pushing the party from inside and outside. And there’s no question that his loyalties weren’t to the party and the party knew it. How quickly forgotten.
on friday while catching a train out of grand central (metronorth had a video installation in the middle of the terminal – very nicely done) included both mlk and andrew young speaking about how martin was aware of everything he was risking in his activism. andrew young said that mlk talked about how he woke up every morning seeing the scars from a knife wound and it was a constant reminder of how much he was putting on the line. and he never backed down. young also said how martin reminded them that they all could die. he said that martin would tell them he would give them the most beautiful eulogy they could imagine and then proceed to tell the most embarrassing stories he knew about whomever he was addressing. the point of the part of the film i watched was specifically, his determination and passion. an amazing role model.
side bar: in the footage of his speeches there were shots of teddy kennedy in the audience, nodding as mlk made his points. so strange to see him so young. i had forgotten what he looked like back then.
after my trip to hell and back, it was staring to make me sick literally. You guys are so much smarter and funnier. I think Shayhar is right Republican’s disguised as dkos-ers have no sense of humor and are besides stress inducing ultimately boring and facile. So I got nothing much to say but will bask in the essays where at least humanity, sanity and truth are sometimes found. It will take me a few days to recover from wading through the swamp. Now all we need is a way to run the world. Lol. Who knew reality really does have a liberal bias. My sense of direction is totally disoriented.
One of the final straws with me was Obama throwing MLK under the bus in his peace prize speech. One of my favorite sppches by MLK is the Viet Nam war speech he gave in 1967. MLK was a voice for all of humanity and he saw the immorality of our ‘foreign policy’. Freedom, equality and morality are not political bargaining chips.
