I found this on the Coffee Party Facebook page and thought it would be great to share the power of love with all of you today.
I hope you enjoy watching the power of Love overcoming the force of Hate, as embodied in the adult leaders and the young future leaders of America of the Gunn High School of California, who came out to support Love and Tolerance in defiance of the Hate promoted by the Westboro Baptist Church, a group that routinely protests the funerals of soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as others, with signs that say “God Hates Fags” and “God loves dead soliders”.
Look at the signs of Hope and Love. It is inspirational.
Look at the pathetic dozen or so hate filled patrons of the Westboro Baptist Church, who, lead by Fred Phelps, preach a message of Hate and exclusion. Now compare that to the massive outpouring of Love, Acceptance and Tolerance that you can see among the hundreds and hundreds of students and faculty at Gunn High School of California. It is truly inspiring.
More to hope for below the fold
What the Westboro Baptist Church does is promote Hate. The best way to defeat blind hatred is with true Love. With that in mind, I applaud the brave, fearless and amazing people of Gunn High School.
For the record, I am agnostic. If I were pressed to choose a religion I would most likely identify myself as somewhere between Buddhism and Gnostic Christianity, but I am without knowledge, and thus remain agnostic. Nevertheless, I have always been interested in learning more and more about the history, facts and myth that make up the different faiths of the world. Part of the religious knowledge I gained at St. John’s University I have tried to augment with my own search for knowledge.
Most notably, among all that I have learned of the ministry of Jesus of Nazareth was that he preached a message of love and understanding. No where in the history of Jesus is it marked down clearly who Jesus hated, or even if He was capable of hate at all.
My mother is Jewish and my late father was Catholic. When I was young I learned as much about religion as possible. My parents taught me to be open minded. I was taught the power of Love. With that in mind, and in order to honor my late father, I am glad to share this victory of love over hate with all of you, dear friends.
In that spirit, I give you all my Love. In the words of the sagacious John Lennon, Love is all you need.
Peace to all

assholish. I will probably fail, but I don’t mean this to be rude or whatever, just a different way of looking at it.
Can you imagine a world in which the appearance of people like Phelps is not by itself an inexplicable chancre on the buttocks of civilization, but rather, a symptom of societal attitudes that leads inexorably to extremes of hate run amuck?
I’ve read the entire history of the Phelps clan. They did not get to be who they are now just because some people are crazy haters. No, they were nurtured and tolerated by the environment in which they existed, in the very same manner in which a bacterial colony will grow in a petri dish designed to facilitate such growth.
And this medium, in which this hate flourishes, is not an accident, and isn’t going away anytime soon. When you have, for example, the Obama administration defending DADT and DOMA in court with Phelpsian arguments, I see very little rectitude in the ability of Democrats or liberals to talk about the right’s homophobia with a straight face.
Do you wish to point me at extreme homophobic hate whilst simultaneously the Democrats have told GLBT people for decades that it’s just not the right time for their rights, and excuse, promote, and defend actions and words that mean they don’t actually give a damn about anything they say?
The culture is responsible for Phelps, that culture hasn’t changed very much, or fast enough, and people who stand to gain something politically from propping up symbols of such hate, whilst simultaneously enabling such attitudes to grow and flourish, have very little to talk about, when you actually think about it that way.
To stop the disgusting, disturbing cancerous explosions of ugliness such as the Phelps clan takes rather more. Otherwise it’s very much like complaining about your lung cancer if you’ve been a smoker for 20 years.
It takes a society, or at least a group of people, that finally takes an unequivocal stand against homophobia (ALL homophobia) and makes it stick. Otherwise, there is nothing to ask for in good faith from gay people, lesbians, transgendered individuals and so on.
